Welcome to the Dota 2 Mac Feedback Forum!

We are tracking Mac specific issues on the Dota 2 GitHub available at https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Dota-2/issues This is the place to check if the bug you are seeing has been reported and to also report your own bugs. Please note this is for Mac or Linux specific issues. Generally Dota 2 bugs should go into Gameplay Bugs forum available at http://dev.dota2.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4

Why is the RAM requirement for Mac double what it is for the Windows machines? This is more consumption that running the whole program through a wrapper...

I'll test this out on my Macbook Air later, judging by the specs it should be able to run it.

Oh jeez. I really don't want to upgrade to Lion. REALLY DON'T, but you guys are tempting me. Is there any chance that Snow Leopard support will be added in the future?

Zoid
07-10-2013, 03:19 PM
We are targeting Lion since it has several features that we are taking advantage of. We're not planning on supporting Snow Leopard.

Okay then. I guess I'll just wait a month until I can get back to my PC. Thanks and good luck!

first of all, thanks for Mac client...but I have got a lot worse fps than on Parallels, yes, I am playing on parallels and still got 50-60fps...but on native Mac client I got 21fps...its really cool to have native Mac client, but...21fps? (i7 2.2 GHz, 6750M 1GB, 8GB RAM, SSD, Mountain Lion 10.8.4) everything off, textures high, shadows low, 1920x1200 (same settings in Parallels Win) thanks

What are your Mac's specifications, Sytler? We're still working on performance issues during this test phase of the Mac client.

Where can I download it? When I search for Dota 2 on Steam, I can't see the test client.

Edit: Oh, just found it on Library tab. :)

Zoid
07-10-2013, 03:53 PM
You must have a license for Dota 2. The "Dota 2 Test" version will show up in your Steam library once you own Dota 2.

Yeah, I found it. Thanks anyway. :) I hope I can get 30+ FPS with early 2011 i5 MBP.

Just downloaded to my 2013 Macbook Pro (Retina, with all specs maxed). I'm having a lot of problems with the client so far. I'm not overly tech savvy, so please forgive me if misuse any of the techno-lexicon. Getting Dota2 to work on my Mac would be amazing, so I want to pitch in anyway...

The main issue so far is that everything (menus and game) looks to be behind a kind of "fuzz," making it look like everything was stretched to fix the screen. I've had this problem with a few other programs (for example, Spotify prior to a fairly recent update), so I'm assuming it's related to the Retina screen. (Am I allowed to post screenshots?/rehost to imgur?)

Feel free to post screenshots. Have you tried changing the resolution settings?

I had that issue, you will be able to change the resolution to 1440 x 900 (Retina "Best") if you make sure that you have the proper 16:10 ratio set. It comes set to the lower aspect ratio for some reason.

Personally I was getting pretty decent FPS until someone messaged me on steam, then I started getting horrible FPS loss and actually had to close the program.

i got 10.6.8 will it work ? please help!
You need Mac OS X Lion 10.7 or later in order to play Dota 2. You can upgrade to Mountain Lion for just $19.99 in the Mac App Store here, https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-mountain-lion/id537386512?ls=1&mt=12

Thank you for NOT supporting Snow Leopard. It is old OS. I know it is a relatively popular OS, but being able to keep pushing the standards forward is good for everyone. I wonder if you guys are using the 3.2 core OGL profile now?

Will this be pushed to the main client with the rest of patch or will it remain on the test client until it is considered out of beta?

I look forward to doing some testing with this tonight! Thanks for supporting Mac users!

I can't remotely download the test client through the iOS application. Dota 2 itself shows up but is obviously not available for my platform, and I've been in the beta for over a year so I should have a license. Is this a limitation for 'beta' software ( I notice the TF2 and CS:S betas aren't controllable from steam for iOS but they at least show up)?

Zoid

This may be because your desktop client needs to be restarted in order to pick up the Dota 2 Test update that is now marked for the Mac platform.

Yeah, this totally fixed it. Thank you so much...I am bad at Mac. :P

I'm still getting pretty dreadful performance. With all settings maxed, it's down to around 5fps and with everything on the absolute minimum I'm topping out at maybe 30fps with no other programs open, but I guess that's all to be expected right now.

I just tried the Dota 2 test on my Macbook Air Late 2010 (1.8 GHz C2D, 2 GB RAM, Nvidia 320m 256 MB) And I set it up with the exact same configuration I play it on Bootcamp, and it seems to drop a lot of FPS, on Bootcamp playing with this same Specs I get like 40-60 Fps on low settings, but on the native Mac Client it seems to get like 15-20 fps.
I know it's a test client, so I hope you can make it run as good as it does in Windows. :D

I have a late 2010 MacBook Pro w/ 8GB ram, nVidia 330M 512MB, SSD, OSX 10.8.3, 2.66GHz i7 and performance isn't too fantastic so far. I did training with max settings and was getting low FPS (note: I play on Bootcamp with all high settings and get ~30fps, also wondering if there is anything to improve it). When watching live games the sound took maybe 30 seconds to start projecting. I can keep testing, hoping to finally be able to ditch WineSkin and bootcamp

YEY, I had been using a wrapper before, but this is great :D

so much thanks... finally can remove bootcamp! :D

I have exactlu same specs... 320M video, 8gb ram and ssd. on bootcamp i had 35± fps with everything on low... i hope the performance is same on both OS.

P.S. so when this patch is out from test client will have a full version of mac or it needs more time?

This may be because your desktop client needs to be restarted in order to pick up the Dota 2 Test update that is now marked for the Mac platform.

Upon arriving home, the test client was showing up fine in my library but the main client wasn't, while the opposite is still true for the listing from iOS. Weird.

just curious if the minimum requirement of a Radeon 7000 is just a conservative spec for the testing phase. the reason i ask is that i have a Radeon HD 6970M that can run dota2 in a wineskin wrapper with the highest settings and get ~60fps whereas the mac beta client gives me ~20fps.

specs are 27in iMac, Mid 2011, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB, OS X 10.8.4

First of all, all I want to say is... WOOOO! Finally omg, I've got sick and tired of constantly switching between windows and os x just to play dota 2, and I just switched to cs:go. After having the application error after the initial download, happy that it works now.

System Specs:
16601

Few problems:
- Performance 60+ on Windows, less than 30 on OS X
- When I change the resolution from the main menu, and play a game the character selection is the initial resolution. 16602
- If I change the window mode to borderless window after increasing the resolution, the mouse selection is not aligned with the cursor.
- Even in fullscreen, hot corners still activate.
- When in game, after changing resolution this happens 1660316604

I have a ATI Radeon HD 4670 and I don't know how it compares to the cards in the requirements, does someone know?It says you need a Radeon 7000 or higher, and yours is quite a bit lower. You can give it a try, but it'll probably run very poorly.

First of all, thank you guys for porting DOTA2 to Mac even though it is late as promised.

I experienced no problem aside from low fps and muted audio.

My Macbook Air Mid 2011 System specs:

Processor: 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 4 GB
VGA: Intel HD 3000 (384 MB shared)

Will try on my iMac soon and will give another feedback!

So ive fully downloaded and messed around with settings
Here are my specs:
16612
OS: 10.7.5
Glitches/Bugs:

1. sometimes after changing audio settings (it seems to be only audio), the client crashes.
2. Upon loading into a custom lobby, there is no audio for a long time, then it comes and goes for a bit (it started comign back around ingame 0:00.
When under cpu stress (i think), the audio dropps out, like when alt tabbing out of, or into game.
3. not really that big of a deal, but sometimes on load screens, if I command tab, the client decides to only cover the top half of the screen for a bit while being unresponsive. It goes back to normal after a while though
4. If I change visual settings ingame, I immediately DC (EDIT: Occasionally it seems)
5. The visuals ingame are extremely fuzzy, Items, and Visual Eeffects (spells, blink dagger, TP scroll that kind of stuff) aren't fuzzy. it almost looks unfocused
EXAMPLES:
16614
16615
16616

other than that, Nothing ATM.
EDIT: Visual Fuzziness fixed by changing visual specs, My b :P

Is there a difference between Radeon HD and Radeon not HD? For example: is Radeon 7000 the same thing as Radeon HD 7000

Is there a difference between Radeon HD and Radeon not HD? For example: is Radeon 7000 the same thing as Radeon HD 7000Saying Radeon 7000 is basically shorthand for Radeon HD 7000. There were ATI cards years and years ago in the upper thousands range with the HD, but older cards aren't relevant to Dota.

Hi, I'd like to report a drop in performance as well.

Mine is a Macbook Air, 1.7 Ghz Intel Core i5, Intel HD 3000.

I used the same graphics settings as when running Bootcamp and got 15-20 FPS; on Bootcamp, it's 30-40 FPS.

Also, I use the same resolution setting: 1280x800 (though it's not my native resolution, which is 1440x900) and it appears much blurrier compared to Bootcamp.

Resolution: 1280x800
Vsync: OFF
Shadows: MED
Additive Light Pass: ON
Animate Portrait: ON
Texture: HIGH
Render Quality: 100%
[Everything else]: OFF

Edit: Tested on 1440x900 and it's still blurrier than Bootcamp as if the Render Quality is not at 100%.

Super-duper poor framerate performance here.

17" Macbook Pro
2.2GHz i7
1GB 6750M
OSX 10.8.4
240GB SSD
16GB Ram

I don't have a way to track the exact fps, but we're in the high teens low 20s at best at the same settings I'm well above 40 at on the Windows side:

1920x1200
AA off, Vsync off, Specular off, World Lighting off, AO off.

On the Windows side I'm in the 40-60 range with those settings.

I find that even dropping the resolution to 1600x1000 does nothing to improve the framerate performance. It's actually creating a delay or lag in the input of commands (clicks) similar to what one would experience with a poor connection to the server despite my connection being excellent (31ms ping). Framerate itself gave me a slight headache after awhile.

Otherwise, glad to see the OSX version is coming along. I have high hopes it will be stabilized and hopefully optimized so that I won't feel compelled to have to reboot into Windows to get playable framerates and performance. Like TF2, I know it will never be *as good* as the Windows version, but closer to parity is enough for me.

Thanks, Valve!

with a dual monitor setup, the mouse does not stay locked to the client, so moving the camera results in the mouse moving over to the other screen

this results in clicks to move while panning the camera alt-tabs out of the client

First, thank you very much for providing a Mac client! I've been playing with Crossover for the past year and I was hoping to get a smoother gameplay when the Mac version is released. Currently, the test client exhibits worse performance than Dota2 with Crossover.

My setup:

Late 2010 13" Macbook Air
OS X 10.8.4
2.18GHz Core 2 Duo
4GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 320M 256MB
250GB SSD

Things I've done:

0. Changed aspect ratio, resolution to 1440x900.
1. Set every option in Video->Advanced to Low or Off. Moved Rendering Quality slider to lowest possible value.
2. Started several games with bots.
3. Restarted the game a few times.
4. Made sure no other program was running in the background (except the usual OS daemons and Steam).

Things I've noticed:

0. Dota 2 starts in 1024x768 mode. If the resolution is changed without restarting the game, the hero selection window still thinks thinks the resolution is 1024x768 and is only covering a portion of the entire screen. After I restarted, the hero window covers the entire game window.
1. Drops a lot of frames. Everything is very choppy, almost unplayable and definitely much worse than playing with Crossover. I don't know what the exact framerate is, but it can't be above 10, with random freezes every 3 seconds.
2. The sound plays fine until the game starts, so I can hear music while in the menu. Afterwards, when the game starts, there is no sound until the first attack on a creep, then it turns back on, but is very choppy and goes away every several seconds, then it comes back.
3. The 'Sound Device' field in Audio Settings says: "textField".
4. Pressing the "\" key didn't show me any consoles, even though it was set as the Console key in Metagame settings.
5. Setting sound quality to 'Low', then clicking on the 'VIDEO' tab in settings, crashes the game (spinning cursor, game window covers top part of the screen, had to Force Quit the program).

Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help!

I have tried playing on iMac 27 mid 2010, resolution was set to 2056x1440, everything in video settings maxed except shadows which were low, vsync off and i got around 25 fps. Specs are i5 2,8ghz, 8gb ram, ATI HD5750 1gb. With everything set to low or off (except rendering max) i got improvement to around 34 fps, so poor perfomance overall.

For those who wonder how to see correct fps, go to steam library, right click on DOTA 2 TEST, go to properties. THere u go to SET LAUNCH OPTIONS, in the blank field u write -console and hit OK. When u start dota console should be opened automatically, then just write in console net_graph 1 and hit enter.

Hello, Dear administrator, thank you publish mac version of dota2 test for us to test, although not an official version but let me see hope, I really can not stand bootcamp brings high heat. So I tested under mac dota2 test, I will tell you my configuration, my machine is a 2011 year-end 15-inch macbook pro 8g RAM 500g SSD 10.8.4 operating system. But into the game but found a few errors, 1,-console console after entering suspended animation. 2, hd6750m graphics, and sometimes there will be painted screen, do not know the reasons for my computer, I will test again. 3, fps much lower than bootcamp, almost the same as on and ppt. But still very happy, thank you provide dota2 test for mac.

* I would like to ask, dota2 official version of what time to be able to release, that is, when will we be able to play the same and windows users dota2. Thank administrators of! Looking forward to your reply.

Things worth mentioning:
- If you change the resolution in game and then start a game, the hero selection screen stays at the previous resolution.
- Game randomly crashed while pushing bot tower (beach ball, not responding). This was with different video settings than those mentioned above (higher graphics).
- Finished a complete game w/ video settings in screenshots with absolutely no problems!

I will be testing more with higher graphics. I started with the highest and it did not perform as well (resolution was also higher). I will continue to tweak to find an optimal setting with graphics that don't suck quite as much.

EDIT 1: Haven't been able to re-achieve that fps. Stuck around 20fps on the lowest settings now. :/

Also having the problem with the client being out of date.

Tried to verify game cache and also reinstalled the game but to no avail...was really looking forward to finally play dota2 on my mac but i guess it'll have to wait...anyways everybody seems to have huge performance issues.

I hope some focus will be put on this client ! Usually mac gamers really get crappy clients that are nowhere near the quality of the windows one, i understand that it is not realistic to ask for the same quality for the mac client but i hope the game will be playable sometimes soon !

Edit : Its fixed now ! Steam updated the game and im queuing for my first game on the OSX Client, i tried the training with all options on low and the framerate was okay, hopefully it will be ok in game to !

You need Mac OS X Lion 10.7 or later in order to play Dota 2. You can upgrade to Mountain Lion for just $19.99 in the Mac App Store here, https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-mountain-lion/id537386512?ls=1&mt=12
Would it be faster to stay at Lion? Or the 10.8 graphic driver would be better?

Well, now I can write a couple of things besides the game being choppy and demanding.

1) Dual Monitor setup
Mouse isn't locket to the screen. And if I by accident click on second screen dota minimises from the no1 monitor. After restoring it mouse works funny, slowed and with a lot of glitches

2) Searching for game while dots 2 is minimised... Impossible. No sounds that the client has found the game. Fix this asap plz.

Well, those two problems are probably easy solvable. But just posting to report them. At this moment if I want to play, I have to disconnect my second screen, launch dota and never minimise it if I want to play. If I want to surf I have to use cmd + q and then launch dota again.

Not actually a dota2 error: While i was playing, i connected a Logitech G700 mouse and it stopped reacting to pointer actions, later i noticed another window in the backgroind saying mac didn't recognized the new keyboard, i selected japanese keyboard and it worked again.

Dota 2 Errors experienced:

- Game crashed once when switching Desktops with touchpad gestures.
- Hero select screen appeared smaller at top-left corner (exactly 1/4 of screen size), so i could see the map before choosing hero.

Playing on a MD101CI/A MBP (HD4000 IGP), with 10.8.4 osx, and runs pretty playable at full and lower settings.

IDK how to get the app logs, if you need more details about the errors please tell how to get it.

Regards and ty for this release =D

I just bought the new MacBook Air today (with the new Haswell CPU) and was looking forward to play Dota 2 on my new Mac. I tried both on OSX and on Windows 7 running Parallels.

Windows 7:
Okay performance in -omg mode spamming spells with Invoker - average 40-50 fps on low settings - slight fps drop when multiple spells. Even when I enabled some settings, the new HD graphics and haswell CPU did quite good.

Mac:
On low settings: quite bad performance: 11-30 fps average - even less when a lot is happening on screen. The models are looking quite blurrish - even though i tried to change the resolution to 5-6 different settings (16:9, 16:10, no borders, different resolutions, etc.).

Anything you want to know? Just ask

1,3 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor
Turbo Boost 2,6 GHz
Intel HD Graphics 5000

Edit: Forgot to say that I am more than happy that Valve finally released a Mac client. Looking forward to playing it on the native OS(X) not having to run it through Parallels. Keep up the work.

I have also just tried the official mac dota 2 release, agree with weed (http://dev.dota2.com/member.php?u=75165) that everything seems to run fairly ok, but the main problem is the fps, it jumps up and down which makes the game rather unplayable, also there is some problem with the sound not starting up until like 1-2 min after the game has start.
Another issue I see is the official mac dota 2's graphics quality in general seems a little poor when compared to the official window version.

First of all: THANK YOU FOR THAT MAC CLIENT!

Before the Mac-Client I used Bootcamp and it was perfect but... I need to had Bootcamp on my mac.

Now after my first match on the mac client I noticed few things:
I got sometimes hard frame drops - like in a team fight. That's not cool.
The grafic seems to be a bit lower then the grafic from windows.
And the sound is a bit bugged - sometimes it does not play - annoying too.

It's hard to play with these downsides but it works for now.

Got all settings on high.

yeah, it's great to have a mac client.. finally :) ty!

I do have some minor problems concerning the client too

I can't choose the 16:9 screen option
16:10 works just fine, but i do prefer the 16:9 ratio and that one sadly doesn't react if i try to activate it :/

I had the same FPS problems like most of the other users too, but i just deactivated the steam overlay (as suggested by someone here) and i do have decent FPS now (still not as good as on bootcamp)..

finally i would like to ask a question...
in windows i was able to write an "autoexec" but i am not able to find the necessary folder to do so on OS X.. most likely i am just blind or stupid ^^

It's great that the proper Mac client is out.. but here's the problem. My Dota 2 always crashes when I start the Mechanics II (Sniper) tutorial. I've come across a bunch of other people who are having the same problem! It's just frustrating because it's unskippable. Audio problems are still present like how it was in Dota 2 Test. It takes minutes for sound to be heard (sometimes up to 15 minutes on Dota 2 Test!).

Pretty disappointed that I waited a long time to play Dota 2 on my Mac only to encounter these problems the day it's released =\

MacBook Air
OS X 10.7.5
1.6 GHz Intel Core i5

Now, I realize I don't have the recommended 4GB RAM, which may be causing my problems. But I've been flawlessly playing the Windows Dota 2 Beta for months using a Wineskin port, and I started playing the Mac test client when it was recently released with no problems. As of July 18th, I can't play the official Mac client OR the test one without it crashing. I deleted the wineskin port, so I haven't tried it again yet.

I hope my low RAM isn't spontaneously going to become an issue, because you can't upgrade it in a MacBook Air.

glad to see that everyone is having the same few issues with the official dota 2 mac version, there is also a topic about the bad graphics issues at github: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Dota-2/issues/256, and I have given quite a detailed comment about it, hope the dota 2 devs can look into it.

2.5 Ghz Intel Quad Core i7

Also running an SSD, not that it matters.

Game runs great most of the time. Graphics are fine, no frame rate drops.

However, the client crashes on me every now and then in the middle of a game. Unbelievably frustrating, especially when a big team fight is about to go down.
Also, when restarting the client after it has crashed, it seems to take 2-3 minutes to "Connect to the Dota 2 Network"... and when it finally does connect, the audio is out for about a minute or so.

It's completely playable otherwise. Just frustrating to crash out. I'll post a bug report in a thread when it happens again.

Getting fps drops too. I get about 20-30 fos at start but drops to below 10 on fights.

Even the glyphs and the battle bonus animations drops the fps.

Also, I think the loss of sound can also be attributed in the frame drops. Happens most of the time when frames are dropped.

One thin I also noticed is that the chat doesn't normally appear especially when sending out signals of ppl missing. Idk if this can also be brought by the frame drops.

I am experiencing the same issues as everyone else apparently with the fuzzy definition of the screen in full screen with the correct dimensions and the game shutting down after 10 minutes of watching live games (do not wanna risk playing a game till this is fixed). My Mac's specs are listed below so I am wondering if the age of my computer is also causing these issues along with the juvenility of the client? It runs perfectly on Bootcamp otherwise.

Try the "quit-reconnect" method.

I've logged most of my DOTA2 on my PC but recently I've tried the MAC client on my 2012 15" MacBook w/Retina. I suffer from the same problem as everybody else here with the low frame-rate even on the lowest of settings; however, I've noticed that if after you select your hero, quit the game, the restart/reconnect to the game, the performance greatly improves. I was getting about 10-12 FPS even on the lowest settings and if I use that "quit-reconnect" method, I get about 80 FPS with everything ON or HIGH, except V-sync and AA, which I will test the next time I play the game.

Good luck to those of you suffering from this issue and hope this helps some of you out!

Oh sorry forgot to mention I'm running at 1440x900.

I just tested it with v-sync and AA both on. Got steady 60 FPS after the "quit-reconnect" method. So it's all maxed out except resolution at 1440x900.

I was very impressed that the OS X client came so suddenly and I expected it to stay as Dota 2 Test for a long time prior to official release..

Now I am experiencing a certain bug every game - a fps drop on the beginning of the game, that I have to restart the client to fix it (I already reported it @github) but besides that the game looks fabulous!
I have bootcamped windows 7 on this macbook pro 15 retina 2013 and I can tell you the OS X version is fantastic!
The windows version of steam makes my dota client laggy with fps spikes if it just made an update to Any steam game before starting dota (and not restarting steam)
If there are other applications (flash-using browser, i.e. facebook , you tube , etc) there is a fps drop ingame.. If I have skype or viber, voicechatting with someone (and that in dota si pretty often) the windows version has around 5 fps drop in performance - with OS X dota 2 client there is no noticeable performance lag whatsovere no matter what I have on the background! The game runs with around 10-15 fps more!
Graphics-wise , speaking of the retina display - OS X has a lot better performance (more crisp, contrast colors) than a bootcamped windows 7 trying to manage this hardware, and indeed practically the game looks a lot better!

I am looking forward to the new updates, hopefully fixing the major performance issues people report.
Keep up the good work guys, my dota 2 experience has gotten on another level! And I think I speak for a lot of happy dota crunching, mac owners out there..

Kudos

I want to give a short feedback for the Dota2 Mac Client. I have test it on an practise match against bots and tried the same settings as I used under my bootcamp Windows. The settings are not at the highest level, they are medium with 1680x1050 resolution. I am using Mac OS X 10.8.4 and the hole game is as that smooth as it is under Windows. Huge FPS drops when I got in "team fights" or I fight against more than two hereos. I decreased the resolution and the graphics seeting, but nothing changes.

It seems like that my commands are beeing delayed and the game does not work proper.

The settings of my MacBook Pro with Retina Display are:

16GB of RAM
Intel Core i7 with 2,6GHz
GeForce 650M
Apple preinstalled SSD

Hope Valve is patching the client as soon as possible. Sorry for my bad english, I am german. :-P

let me remind you, the game doesn't have demo status and it's quality is unbelievably low. the issues are so huge that a single tester would find them in a few hours, I believe they were aware of all of them before release and simply needed a wider free testers audience. well, they've got it.

Valve knows about the issues, and most of them are already fixed in the test client. Still, you have to understand, they are not going to push a rather big update (~370 Mb) to all Dota 2 players just because OS X client has bugs. Mac is not the highest priority, and you shouldn’t expect it to be one. Just wait, it has been only a week.

that's a good point, publishing large updates too frequently would be bad. however, at this period of time, while we have a buggy os x version, it is natural to receive lot of fix requests, that's how public testing works. of course they should have implemented automated crashes report system, unfortunately crashes isn't the only problem of the released version so I believe it is important to give them as much feedback as possible.

As for today's 55mb patch, I have yet to play the updated version although they didn't provide any info on what they changed. The only change I have seen in the news as of now is that they changes "The One Horn" to rare.

Man these new issues are such a bummer. Before this recent update my client was near flawless, only issues were the random tearing at max settings (that didn't bug me much because of it's infrequency, and usually I would lower the model to medium, shadow to low and fog off and be great), and the audio sometimes cutting out to silence for a few minutes at the worst. But, these never affected my gameplay.
Now it's crashing every time I start a new game after about 5-10 minutes (like level 7-10 usually) no matter how many times I reinstall the client or restart my computer.
Back to Bootcamp until these issues are worked out..
But we do appreciate the work Mac devs in bringing this awesome game to our OS and hopefully the next update will fix these issues for good.

The best solution for me to play DotA 2 on Mac without any problems has been to disable the Steam overlay. You can do this for DotA 2 only by right clicking the game in your Steam games list, click Properties, then untick the Steam Community In-game checkbox.

It might be that I'm running the Mavericks DP, but I've had nothing but smooth frame rates on my 15" RMBP since then.

as you can see here (https://developer.apple.com/graphicsimaging/opengl/capabilities/index.html) nvidia loses almost in every aspect at OpenGL@OSX where the values are different.

You need at least 10.7: 17791. Check the other requirements and note that the current version is way too far from release, the requirements are not final.

Hopefully they just didn't note that but fixed it anyway. It seems like a pretty big patch so maybe they did fix it. This fixed my FPS problems: http://dev.dota2.com/showthread.php?t=101149 but unfortunately it means worse graphics. Anyone know when the update will be applied to the main client?

20:00 gmt. with the latest patch, all settings to lowest (including resolution 1024x768) no sound and 20fps (feels more like 10):
17900

(windows: 1440x900, all maxed ~30fps)

I don't want to create separate topics for these issues but:

1) The background is not updated to the compedium aegis/green and it's not moving (this is a setting most probably). It's just the old red dota logo.
2) You cant alt+tab while loading, something you can do in DotaMac.

TilllT

With the new Update:

Still low framerate about 20fps. Only if I make my game looks like lol I get 29fps
For the first 15 seconds of the match is there no sound.
And the Icon won't light up in yellow if you alt-tabbed while searching and the game was ready.

Soo what does the patch brings new?

- Improved stability when showing webpages.

But ... they are working on it. I won't scream at valve... hopefully....

Fix These Problems Please!

Im still having bad fps and no sound at the beginning. The sound problem is happening for me less though. The fps is still bad, i lowered the settings and its playable but only just, the fps gets a little better. The fps hasn't been fixed properly. Good news is i haven't crashed since the update.

EDIT* Actually after lowering the settings a little bit (Not too much, just putting the textures on medium and shadows on medium) and playing a few games it does seem to work well now. The fps isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. And i still haven't crashed. It's playable for me now. Thank you devs!

Ive also noticed that if i put shadows and textures on high i get very bad fps and crash a lot.. like every 5-10 mins in game.

Okay to be fair now - DotA 2 runs good now. I can't report crashes in my DotA 2 games anymore. I only "forced a chrash while beeing in a lobby smashing Invokers spells in wtf mode.
But I got my 30fps now. I lowered the grafics and it's not too ugly right now. You really can play it ! :)

Sure it's not exactly brilliant but Open GL isn't Direct X.

So here's my feedback:

1. The Hot Corners option is working while I'm playing the game, if I move cursor to any corner of the screen something happens (e.g. Mac goes to sleep, shows desktop...). I've to disable them every time I wanna play which is so annoying.

2. This game has some serious FPS issues on Mac. I'm using an Early 2011 MBP which is fine for playing lots of games. Also I've tried DOTA2 on BOOTCAMP and it works fine. But in OS X even though I've lowered the settings I still have FPS problems...

Hopefully I haven't notice any sound problems, though it takes about 5 seconds after each "alt+tab" for the sound to come back. And finally, the game never crashed for me.

Hope to see fix soon, thanks.

We now do not use Adobe Flash to play videos, but HTML5 video tags. This should fix a crash with Adobe Flash 11.7 on Mac.
Add support for querying Gnome Settings for proxy settings for embedded webpages.
Fixed crash-on-startup on Mac that could occur with certain game controllers.

I'd recommend to wait until mavericks release, it will probably have an updated video card drivers and possibly higher supported version of open gl. You might also want to perform a clean install to make sure the system runs as fast as possible.

Hi All,

Just a quick question. I have read the requirements to play dota 2. Tried to launch dota 2 but failed.
Currently my system is running on OS 10.6.8 with a graphics card of NVIDIA GeForce 9400M.

Will upgrading to OS 10.8 help? Will my graphics card be a limiting factor as well?

Year! Upgrading your OS would help. But I on your side would wait for 10.9, because it would be wasted money if you purchase 10.8 now. 10.9 will be out on 15. Octobre... I guess

Logged in today and noticed a significant drop in my FPS. It left my game pretty much unplayable and as a result has gotten me into the LPQ for 7 days. Rebooted, reinstalled and have tried everything I could but the game stutters terribly from the beginning of a match and it literally has never done this before.

I just updated to 10.8.5 so maybe that has something to do with it, but here are my specs:

Macbook Pro 15 inch, mid 2010
Processor: 2.66 ghz intelcore i7
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

I'm just confused, because it was perfectly fine yesterday.

well... same here... im playing dota 2 on a wrapper since i got the beta invite. the day they released the mac/linux version i was sooooooo happy and tried it out instantly - ofc it was IMPOSSIBLE to play matchmakings because of all the known bugs/glitches/weird fps issues. so i had to play again with my wrapper (works really good, only a few bugs like game crashing if minimizing). these days i downloaded the update and hoped for a fixed mac version - ofc its again/still IMPOSSIBLE to play a clean matchmaking w/o getting low prio because of leaving/reconnecting to fix the laggs (check my last thread).

if you guys need money to fix these problems just announce it - i think the mac community would agree to pay some dollars if it's possible to play dota 2 on a mac like the lucky windows-users...

On my mac, I manage only to enter the menu. Got Macbook Pro i7 2.66 8GB RAM Geforce GT 320M. I was testing on "Practise with Bots" On High Quality I managed to enter hero selection screen, however everything was stuttering even sound, after selecting hero my mac went in to "Well of Death" state. I restarted mac with magic power button, i changed setting to lowest quality in dota and then "Well of Death" state appear even before selecting hero. It's looks that you guys have still lot of works with mac version. I don't have account on GitHub, and I'm not planning to create one so I'm not able to create the issue there, can we create it in this forum? Also in menu I realize that there is a wrong single frame when I mouse over some elements. (just single frame with some additional window or something to fast to realize exacly what it is)

Question - Does anyone else boot Dota up on Mac and the small Dota 2 icon appears on the dashboard, but nothing happens and it just instantly goes to "Not Responding"?

I used to have a windows partition I played on, but eventually it filled up and I couldn't update. I deleted and was going to make a new one but can't at the moment and realized that with Mavericks I should be able to play Dota 2. I updated to Mavericks today, allowed access to Steam on security, but now I get this. I don't even see the main screen for Dota, nothing opens, just the icon pops up on the dashboard next to chrome. Can anyone help?

Running Dota 2 on a maxed out 2012 iMac and it's a painful, painful thing. When I bootcamp to Win8 it runs like a champ, but the OSX version crashed every other game like clockwork, lag and stuttering whenever I respawn and it's missing basic things like Item rarity text colors and it doesn't even have a proper app icon. Don't even get me started on the Settings menu listing Windows-specific keys and options....

Why does the Mac client of Dota 2 feel like a second-class citizen?!

Mac used to run dota2 really terribly - lagged a lot, no sound etc, but a month ago it changed and became playable as much I could get on playing Dota2 with Windows platform. I'm happy that the issue was fixed, but recently it still lags a little.
Otherwise, satisfied so far with playing dota2 on my Mac.

I have been having the same problems with frames dropping and not being able to play because of fps lag. I had to drop my graphics but that did not seem to help at all. I want to know if the people from dota can fix this, or if this is just happening because Mac isn't powerful enough to run dota. I play other valve games like left 4 dead 2, gmod, and tf2 and frames on those games seem to work fine. Obviously dota is more demanding than any of those, but valve should be able to fix the frame issues.

I hope this the right place to post my Dota/Mac problem. I have a mid 2012 Macbook pro 15, Retina, 2.6 Pentium I7 quad, Nvidia 650M, 400 gigs of free memory and 8 gigs of Ram, that I just got specifically to play Dota 2 well. The game is choppy, sound is choppy, barely playable, doesn't matter if it's on high settings across the board or the lowest settings. I can play Dota 2 on my dinosaur PC laptop which barely meets the minimum requirements, on the same internet connection and it works just fine. Any thoughts on what might be happening? Thank you for any help.

You might be able to give it a try with bootcamp, but the minimum requirement on mac is an Nvidia 320m. Your's is quite far behind that.

I'm using a MacBook Pro4,1 early 2008 15" model as well with that same graphics card. Dota 2 won't launch in Lion Os X 10.7.2, (which is my favourite OS) I get " Error! Required OpenGL extension "GL_EXT_texture_sRGB_decode" is not supported. Please update your OpenGL driver" However when I boot into OS X 10.9 Mavericks it runs fine in the same MacBook Pro. Wheres in my early 2008 iMac ir runs fine in Lion 10.7.2 with no issues! Any suggestions to get it running in Lion 10.7.2 in my MacBook Pro4,1?
