Hi Valve, why don't you make a tutorial for everyone on how to import models etc? Or maybe give models & co to who wants to create items?

I looked here and there to find a way to import 3d models of heroes, but nothing worked, neither the way that worked for tf2. So can you give us a tutorial or the models themselves.?

I haven't gotten started yet, but I'm going to assume since unlike TF2 we don't have full authoring tools yet, that we don't have to fully rig our cosmetic items and test them ingame yet. Since it seems like Valve has to actually make "customizable" versions of heroes (aka Natures Prophet/Lone Druid Beardless) that they're probably willing to accept just the source models themselves from us and let themselves work them ingame. So if you wanted to submit a helmet or something for Zeus, you would be able to just submit the model and if Valve/Community likes it Valve themselves will rig it and put it ingame. When actual tools and documentation comes out like TF2, we will probably be expected to have our submitted files fully rigged and ready to go unless otherwise.

I may be wrong on this, but it seems likely. So don't worry too much right now on having them work ingame for right now.

I don't know, i heard valve gave models to the users that made the actual items.

instead of requesting here. try requesting a tutorial for this from the almighty Cybormatt.

He will help as he helped by making a tutorial for all the replay video makers

We'll be creating a TON of tutorials and guidance in the very near future.

Hopefully an initial SDK content pack with raw hero assets will be ready soon.

Epic, that's great news. It's gonna be pretty hard making cosmetics for over 100 heroes so helping the community help you is well thought.

Arent there tons of tutorials? (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6718-JXNM-4879)

Where can I find good tutorials to learn 3D modeling?

Search for “speed modeling” on YouTube and visit the source developer wiki. There are a lot of digital art communities online with great information. Here are a few that we like to visit.

What software tool should I use to make my item?

It varies depending upon the project, but this is generally what we use:

Maya (models, textures, skeletons, morphs, animation)
Photoshop (textures)
Zbrush (detail models, morphs and textures)
3Dcoat (models and textures)
Mudbox (models and textures)
Wings3D (models only, but it’s free)
Modo (models and textures)
3DS-Max (models, textures, skeletons, morphs, animation)
XSI (models, textures, skeletons, morphs, animation))

I'm sure once valve writes the tutorials, other community members will offer translations.

That's great news greenmarine, can't wait!
