  • [Fixed] Ranged units are unable to deny invisible friendly units

    Summary:
I was playing WR on a pub MM game and at one point we were pushing the dire bot tier3 tower and right before we went in I tried to deny lycans wolves, but they didnt take damage from me. I tried it 3-4 times to deny them but I was unable to do any damage. The wolves were sitting at 1/3 of their HP. So far I havent been able to reproduce it - in another game it was just fine to deny the wolves.
    MatchID 8729075

    Repro Steps:
1.) pick lycan and another hero
    2.) skill wolves
3.) summon wolves and let them take dmg to get them in deny range
4.) Use a ranged hero to attack the invisible wolves (in deny range)

    Result:
I wasnt able to deny the wolves, they werent taking any damage from me.

    Expected Result:
You should be able to deny lycans wolves.

As said above, I wasnt able to reproduce it, because there is also the problem that the replay is not available and affected by the recent replay bug that doesnt let you download it. I was able to download the replay once, but it then showed me a completely different game and I had to delete it manually from my dota directory.

NOTE: Not only for wolves, but it doesn't allow you to deny invisible units at all.

It's a known bug that you cannot deny invisible units. There were a few threads according to this, however this one seems good formatted so I am adding THIS one to the sticky.

This depends on the type of attack.
If the deny attempt is made by a melee hero, then it succeeds.

"Ranged heroes cannot deny invisible friendly denyable units" sums up the current case. Melee ones can.

Can you re-test again, but this time with an enemy reveal effect on the invis units?

This is my theory: The problem stems from 'invisible unit can avoid projectile unless revealed' mechanic of the game, but the code literally just check 'if it's invis' and 'if it's not revealed' for the avoidance and nothing else. So because you're an ally you can visibly see the invis units, but because it's not revealed and is still invis, the projectile miss.

So by that theory, if the units are near an enemy Sentry or is affected by Dust (or just an enemy hero with Gem) then you should be able to deny it.

Sadly I won't be able to play dota2 for the next 8 days or so .- . so I can't test it myself.

Whether your theory is correct, or not, I don't know...

But you are right, when there is an enemy detection upon the invisible deniable unit, then the deniable unit is deniable for both ranged and melee heroes.
            So, all summed up:
There is no issue for the melee deny attempters at all.
The ranged deny attempters fail to deny when their deniable target is invisible, but they succeed in denying if that specific invisible unit is somehow being detected by the enemy.

Wow, this bug makes Riki sad.
I will mercilessly add to my ignore list anyone that makes an incredibly annoying signature.
