  • Tracking a Night Stalker with Aghinim's Scepter

    Summary:
When using Track or Amplify Damage on a Night Stalker who has an Aghinim's Scepter at night, you and your allies gain unrestricted vision around the Night Stalker.

    Repro (private lobby with cheats):
    1) Create a private lobby with cheats enabled
    2) Pick Bounty Hunter or Slardar
    3) Spawn in Night Stalker on enemy team with commands (-createhero npc_dota_hero_night_stalker enemy)
    4) Give the Night Stalker an Aghinim's Scepter (-givebots item_ultimate_scepter)
    5) Level both your hero and Night Stalker to at least level 6. (-lvlup 25 and -levelbots 25)
    6) Use Track or Amplify Damage on Night Stalker
    7) Use Darkness with Night Stalker (his ulti)

    Result:
You and your allies will gain unrestricted vision around Night Stalker as if he was on your team. During the day the effect is the same as any other hero that is tracked.

    Expected:
Only gain vision of the Night Stalker and a small radius around him, as with any other hero that is tracked.

    See screenshots attached.

Well you gain the same vision as the hero, seems intended. Dota1 this didnt happened cause the visio was given by a flying dummy unit

With track you do not gain the same vision as the hero. You only gain a small radius around this. I know this since if I am tracked I stay away from teammates so the enemy does not know they are near me.

Misfit is correct, Track only gives Gondar and his allies True Sight and small vision over his target since it is basically just cast a Faerie Fire on an enemy.

        ^nvm, it is wrong

though i don't have any idea on how much vision's aoe is given, data dump and World Editor doesn't seem to show it values... (cmiiw)

^it doesn't have any values since it gives victim's vision

Incorrect. Faerie Fire grants you the same vision as the target, Yoshi- has the correct answer.

It is quite easy to test. Track a nightstalker (since his day/night vision range is reversed) during the day. Have the enemy NS use darkness and notice how your vision of him expands.

Debatable whether this is intended or not. His unobstructed vsion was provided by a dummy unit in Dota 1, so it wasn't actually NS's vision.

^oh i see, it explains why there is no data on vision AoE, will edit it, testing it in DotA 1 doesn't give BH the unobstructed vision though

well, if track/amplify damage gives the vision of the target, i think it's better to keep it consistent, no exception for nightstalker.

actually the dummy unit seems to be supposed NS's vision, but since there is no way to change unit vision w/o changing unit, they used dummy unit instead (cmmiw, don't know much about this one)

imo this might be a fix

Just tested it out and it does indeed seem like it gives you the same vision as the hero that has been tracked. I always thought it was smaller.

Still don't know if it's a bug or intended. Guess we'll have to wait and see

After some further thought I still believe this is a bug. Main reason being that if this was intended it could have been done in the Warcraft 3 version of DotA as well.

EDIT: Works for Batrider too if he is in Firefly. Updated first post and included screenshots (Removed)

I am still leaning towards this being intended. No easy fix for the WC3 version comes to mind, maybe you can explain to me how.

Batrider is almost definitely intended. Track lets you share vision, and batrider gains flying vision when using Firefly. I don't see a problem with this.

Going by your OP, I'm not sure if you understand how track works. It does not reveal a fixed small area around the target, you actually gain the same vision area as the target.

In war3 the unrestricted vision is given by having a flying dummy unit given to Night Stalker. It should be relatively easy to then just give Bounty Hunter and team a dummy flying unit as well if the Night Stalker is tracked. I don't see anything in the war3 engine that would stop this.

And if NS does not have scepter? None of Nightstalker's abilities are actually changed by scepter, unlike other ultimate upgrades. You wouldn't be able to make Track check if NS had a different ability thanks to scepter upgrade.

What is the proc then for giving NS the dummy unit? Once he buys scepter, something has to change. Allow track to detect this change.

EDIT: Removed Batrider. It's do able in War3 dota. Someone gave me false info

Checks if Nightstalker has Hunter or Crippling Fear, and that Nightstalker is not an illusion (so illusions don't benefit)

I'm still not convinced. Since you did mention Batrider, when batrider gains flying vision Track will benefit from it as well. Why should Nightstalker be any different?

Will add this to Common Bugs, but thats my two cents.
