There is another bug. If you get disconnected (ISP problem for example) and then come back, the default build (recommended items) are gone. You have to close the game to get it back.

This is still broken in today's test client release.

Good to know, I did wonder where they where saved but never went looking (I've only been playing DOTA 2 for 3 days... after never playing anything similar before So still a lot I'm trying to learn and get up to speed with).

Hope this issue with customising the shop gets fixed soon, as a new player, it's really hard to remember where everything is and wastes valuable time fumbling through the shop for certain items (I also need to figure out what's from the side shop, really wish main shop items had an icon to indicate that or something so I don't waste donkey).

2GB update today and not a single byte in there to fix this... :/
                back to pen&notebook i guess...

EDIT: Just played one of the better games, wanted to commend one guy from the team... and no commend option there? I was still in game, i know it was blocked from the outside (to deny those "commend 4v4" spamms), but before this update, it was normal to commend someone in the game...

                So, another bug?

This is really starting to become a bit of a problem. It can be very frustrating to want to buy while laning, yet not be able to quickly access items and drag them to the quick purchase slot. When I'm trying to last hit and keep some semblance of map awareness it's pretty difficult to search for the item I'm looking for. This was never a problem for me or my friends when we first starting playing, but as of the All Random patch, neither of us can save builds nor access our old saved builds. The “list” button at the top right corner of the shop screen is simply gone, and if one of us tries to save a build it doesn’t ask for a name and resets after each game.

Is there any temporary workaround to this? I don’t have an itembuilds folder in my DOTA 2 folder, however I did used to have numerous builds. I could care less about losing the old ones, just want to be able to put that feature to use again!

Can you re-try editing & saving an item build?

Yesterday's hotfix should make it so that editing your recommended item loadout for a hero saves across sessions. Can you try editing your recommended items for a given hero in a custom lobby, leaving the game, and entering a new one to verify that it saved the settings?

General question for people who use this feature heavily - do you typically have more than 1 saved item build per hero or do you make 1 custom item build for each hero?

It does save custom item builds. I have just tested it with Wisp, added a couple of branches to the Starting Items, left the game, re-entered, build was just like I had saved it.
But I think their issue is about being unable to access the multiple-lists through the button on top right we previously had; screenshot from the original post in this thread:

Personally, I do not even adjust the primary suggestions, and leave them as they are. I just use branched menus to access the items. Like, for Sange & Yasha, I click on the Blade of Alacrity > Yasha > S&Y.
But that little button wasn't any distracting for me. I haven't used it even once; and although I won't ever use it, I wouldn't mind having it back there. And it seems that there are plenty that used it...

Most cases, I have one custom build per hero, but in a few cases I have several for different playstyles (examples: Invoker, Nature's Prophet).

I haven't yet tried editing items, leaving, re-entering and checking if the build saved.
As for the second question, I only use 1 custom item build for each hero.
Thirdly, like ThoAppelsin noted before me, saving recommended items across sessions is just one part of the equation, that button at the top where you were able to load custom builds (screenshot above) is what's still missing and making trouble for people.

I only use one custom item build: for support heroes. It simply has all items that contribute to the team. The old way was nice since I only needed to select the build on the heroes. Now I would need to edit the build for numerous heroes.
