For some heroes which can play different roles I use more than one build.
For example for Windrunner I had a support build and some kind of semi-carry build.

Having to merge that in one build would make the build quite large and confusing, with having lots of different early game, core or situational items.

Especially for unexperienced players like me it is very helpful to have these separate builds, so I really think you should still support more than one build per hero. I don't see why this should be changed from the previous behavior as this is now a regression.

Most of the time one build for each hero.
I have some heroes with two builds, mostly for jungle/non-jungle and heroes with more than one role.

Is there a way to get the already saved builds from before back?

1 per hero... for me at least I typically don't deviate far from my own custom build. The "situational" category really sums up what all four categories are used for me. There's a pool of X items I'll get for Y hero each game, depending on what I'm against I'll choose the ones I deem appropriate and skip the others. I find it OK just have a small list of unorganized items in the situational category... maybe that's just me though.

Also, when I customized my Void's layout 2 days ago in the evening (PST) it still hasn't saved... I've stopped trying though, I'll give it another go tonight.

almost every hero guide on playdota comes with 3 or more modular itembuilds for the hero.

I use around 3 builds per hero.
I think I got just 1-2 with 4 builds but for the rest, 3 is the number.

I took a break for a month and was sad to see all my custom item builds were gone. I had a couple item builds for almost every character and am now lost without them.

I also am sad I cannot look at item builds for other characters because I would sometimes do this when playing with friends who don't know what items to buy for characters they have never played before.

I thought that change was intentional. I thought they deleted the list because the game automatically remembers the build you use for the present hero. Then, if you play another game with the same hero, the same build is shown.
I guess I was wrong thehn.

AFAICT no one on this thread has verified this yet, so -- yes, I can confirm that saved builds are working in the way you describe here.

For most heroes I only have one saved item build. A couple of heroes have two that I use regularly.

One other capability which I often used before the TW patch, but haven't seen mentioned in this thread, is a single saved item build for multiple heroes.

The first post under the dev's question (#27 of this thread) verified it right in the first 2 sentences:

It indeed has been mentioned already, too:

Indeed, it's disturbing not being able to load item suggestion lists in many ways. I even would make an item suggestion list while watching a Very High Matchmaking game.

I don't see how it could be. I suppose they were toying with a new idea for it which would be linked with some sort of guide system, but they rushed their work and somehow accidently removed the feature, but it doesn't make any sense that it happened that way.
I will mercilessly add to my ignore list anyone that makes an incredibly annoying signature.

The real problem here is retrieving the saved item builds that have already been entered. I have entered a build for every hero and multiple builds for some heroes that I use in multiple ways (mid, ganker, support, offlane Windrunner for example). I spent over 10 hours researching and comparing builds to decide on the what I wanted to enter in game.

You're not the only one. Imo the smallest posibble bug (deleted icon, don't believe they actually ripped out, killed, burned and stomped that function) will take months to be fixed :/

Edit: still no fix on the lstest patch...
