  • Aphotic Shield deals damage with no damage absorbed.

    Is this intended?

    Repro:
    1. Pick abaddon
    2. Skill Aphotic Shield to lv.4
    3. Spawn an enemy unit nearby
    4. Self-cast Aphotic Shield, then re-cast it once it is off cooldown, so the first instance would explode.

The enemy unit takes 200 magical damage before resists, even though shield did not absorb any damage.

        Notes
        • Damage type: magic
        • If Abaddon has Aphotic Shield on him, it will not burst if Abaddon is currently under the effect of Borrowed Time.
        • Will replace any Aphotic Shield currently active on the target, so two shields will never be active at the same time on the same unit.
        • Aphotic Shield will burst at the end of its duration if it has not taken sufficient damage.

          From Playdota.com:
Aphotic Shield will burst at the end of its duration if it has not taken sufficient damage.
You can easily check it up, here's the link to the source: http://www.playdota.com/heroes/lord-of-avernus
Scroll to Aphotic Shield and read the notes. Hope this will help.

And where does it say it would deal damage equivalent to max absorbed on the explosion?

                DotA1 says so. Try it.

They should add a note about this into the tooltip in Dota2.

it used to deal only the damage it absorbed in dota 1. maybe it was changed, i dont know but like 4 years ago, it worked like this.

                    From 6.73 changelog:
                    - Aphotic Shield will explode at the end of its duration if it has not taken sufficient damage.
And, like idom86 said, it always does max damage on explosion, no matter how much did you absorb before.

It never used to deal damage based on how much it absorbed when the shield expired. It simply disappeared. You HAD to use the full shield to get the aoe damage off, else it did nothing.

                      .. Until ^ that.

So basically this is 200 dmg aoe nuke with 6 sec cd and damage barrier is only a side-effect?
Well the tooltip is misleading then. Even though it doesn't have the alt+hover tooltip yet.

The tooltip isn't misleading. It says it does damage equal to the damage it COULD absorb, not to the damage it absorbed. If you cast a 200absorb shield, it could absorb 200, so it does 200dmg, regardless. What's missing is the fact that only one shield can be active on a target and recasting it will remove the previous one and add a new one(which results in an explosion).

Summons dark energies around an ally unit, creating a shield that absorbs a set amount of damage before expiring. When the shield is destroyed it will deal damage equal to the amount it absorbed to an area around it. Removes certain types of negative buffs on cast.

The tooltip is incredibly misleading in Dota 2, on the Dota 2 Wiki and on Playdota. It says nothing about damage it "could" absorb at all, so I'm not sure where you got that from - is the in-game WC3 tooltip different from all the other sources?

Anyone reading it without knowing better would think that it would "burst and deal damage equal to the amount it absorbed to an area around it" at the end of its duration, because that's what happens "when the shield is destroyed", and it's destroyed when it "expires" at the end of the buff.
