Well I guess it's clear for me now even though it makes very little sense. Thanks for explaining everything to me.

Earlier, it wasn't exploding at the end if the shield didn't absorb enough damage ==> misleading tooltip about "dealing damage equal to damage absorbed" assuming it will always absorb 200(or less if not lvl4) damage.

After that it was changed to always explode at the end of the duration if it didn't earlier, dealing the same damage (and without changing the tooltip).

I just loaded the game and checked the tooltip on the card. That's the dota2 tooltip. Wiki isn't an official source so it could say it does 5000damage and it still wouldn't matter. Playdota is also often outdated or confusing.

    Ingame description:
Summons dark energies around an ally unit, creating a shield that absorbs a set amount of damage before expiring. When the shield is destroyed it will burst and deal damage equal to the amount it could absorb to an area around it...

So basically the wiki probably uses an early version of the tooltip from test, since it was originally only exploding for the amount it absorbed and was later fixed since it's supposed to explode for full damage.

What's missing is the fact that only one shield can be active on a target and recasting it will remove the previous one and add a new one(which results in an explosion).

    • If Abaddon has Aphotic Shield on him, it will not burst if Abaddon is currently under the effect of Borrowed Time.
    • Will replace any Aphotic Shield currently active on the target, so two shields will never be active at the same time on the same unit.
    • Aphotic Shield will burst at the end of its duration if it has not taken sufficient damage.

The tooltip is incredibly misleading in Dota 2, on the Dota 2 Wiki and on Playdota. It says nothing about damage it "could" absorb at all, so I'm not sure where you got that from - is the in-game WC3 tooltip different from all the other sources?

Anyone reading it without knowing better would think that it would "burst and deal damage equal to the amount it absorbed to an area around it" at the end of its duration, because that's what happens "when the shield is destroyed", and it's destroyed when it "expires" at the end of the buff.

Well the tooltip is misleading then. Even though it doesn't have the alt+hover tooltip yet.

It never used to deal damage based on how much it absorbed when the shield expired. It simply disappeared. You HAD to use the full shield to get the aoe damage off, else it did nothing.

    .. Until ^ that.

    From 6.73 changelog:
    - Aphotic Shield will explode at the end of its duration if it has not taken sufficient damage.
And, like idom86 said, it always does max damage on explosion, no matter how much did you absorb before.

    DotA1 says so. Try it.

They should add a note about this into the tooltip in Dota2.

    From Playdota.com:

You can easily check it up, here's the link to the source: http://www.playdota.com/heroes/lord-of-avernus
Scroll to Aphotic Shield and read the notes. Hope this will help.
