    In dota 1, essence shift has a 0.4/0.35/0.3/0.25 cooldown between instances to prevent abuse with non-attack damage sources, due to the limitation of damage and attack detection. Particularly spamming attack commands while dark pact hits very quickly.

    This makes zero sense to carry over to dota now that the effect is hardcoded. Since it can only trigger on attacks, and slark has a 1.7 BAT, level 3/4 cooldown do absolutely nothing. His maximum attack frequency is 0.34 with +400% IAS. All level 1/2 serve to do is prevent essence shift from working properly *if* slark somehow got max attack speed with low level essence shift. The cooldown itself serves no productive function and has been copied into the game for no good reason and should be removed.

    There's no actual CD in Dota 2, it's only written in the tooltip.

      There's a cooldown (you can see it on the ability whenever you hit), however it's pretty much useless. Unless you somehow get max attack speed with essence shift at level 1 or 2 :/

          Its less than useless though, its essentially an introduced bug where high attack speeds of essence shift doesn't work at low levels, something clearly not intended in the spell.
          While most people might say its not too relevant, a slark might hypothetically opt for a 1 point essence shift build with say a troll warlord on his team, could easily lead to the cooldown obstructing it

            then the CD actually serves a function. u cant really say icefrog didnt use CD for this.

              The CD was just to stop essence shift being procced by dark pact.

                i know, but its side-effect could be used for balance. we r not sure what icefrog was thinking..

                  We know exactly what icefrog was thinking: due to the bad hit detection method used, essence shift was exploitable, particularly with dark pact, and therefore the cooldown was simply a method to prevent S-spam abuse. Which doesn't apply to dota 2. And we can presume that the scaling cooldown was to make it harder to exploit at level 2 during laning when your attack speed is still very slow, while not interrupting with max attack speed slarks at level 7+

                  Again, none of which applies to dota 2. It serves no purpose and can actually harm gameplay in a few niches situations

                    My question would be why even make it scales at all, especially at lv 3 to 4 where the lowered cooldown only matters if stop spam was involved.

                    If Ice just wanted to avoid the potential of stop-spam, then a set cooldown of .3s at all level (and remove it from dota2 since the way it is) will reduce the abuse stop spam while not screwing max aspd slark (MoM + an ally Troll Warlord, especially during lv 10-11 where he's probably going to have 1 point shift)

                      We'd be here for days if we try and figure out what icefrog is thinking - it's probably just the solution he came up with at the time.

                        Do note that other internal cooldowns on on-hit effects were not ported (Feast, Backstab, etc.).

                          I think thats probably the most damning bit. Why the exception for essence shift carrying its on-hit trigger cooldown, when no other skill does?
