    Dota 2: Casting Aphotic Shield on a unit that already has it will make the old one explode and damage, while adding a new one.
    WC3: Each one works independently, casting it on a unit that already has it will not make the old one be replaced, or explode.

    In WC3 is damage applied to the old shield first or the new shield?

      Each shield ignores 200 damage, which means if you have 6 level 4 shields on a unit, it will ignore 1200 damage. And it will also deal 1200 damage if they explode.

        Suppose you have a damaged shield with 100 damage block left, then add a new one with 200. If you take 100-199 damage, the order of application of the damage will decide whether a shield explodes or not.

          Level 4 shield, level 2 impale (takes 3 impales to remove the shield)

          1. Cast Shield on a unit
          2. Cast impale twice on that unit
          3. Cast another shield
          4. Cast a third impale

          The first shield will explode, and the second one will only have 2 impales left.

            Impale does 140 damage at level 2.
            But if I understand you correctly then the full damage is applied to all shields? In that case you could have 3 shields active that explode for 600 damage after blocking 200.

              Seems like it.

              200+ damage will make all shields explode, and will be blocked.

              For example, level 3 Finger of Death will make 10 shields explode, leaving Abaddon unharmed.

                Erm...
                Wow, this one actually looks like a DotA 1 6.79 bug to me.

                The code added to allow Aphotic Shield to be removed by dispels breaks the previously coded behavior to destroy it on self-casts. The previous code is not removed, it is just rendered invalid by the new code.

                (It seems forcing a TriggerEvaluate() on a trigger does not pass a null Trigger Event ID; most likely it passes the last Event ID passed which was EVENT_PLAYER_UNIT_SPELL_EFFECT...which causes the Purge condition to fail (only checks for Purges and not Aphotic Shield) and the trigger does nothing.)
