  • Tower's aggresion mechanics

It seems, tower's algorithm isnt the same as in original DOTA

for example, when enemy units hit(or aiming to hit) another unit(allied to tower), they have higher priority for tower. And when an enemy hero comes in close range to tower, just with move command, it shouldnt hit it, while there are other units with higher priority in range.

is it considered as a bug? Or original tower algorihm copirated by Blizz?

The tower doesn't attack a hero first just because he's in range. It attacks you if you attack the hero / tower without creeps attacking it.

that's the point, in dota you can towerdive without getting a hit, just moving without attack.
in dota2 i coulndt do this.

You can still towerdive if you dont attack the hero. If you attack him (rightclicking) you will get hit by the tower. It's the same as in DotA.

Other thing that crossed my mind about tower mechanics.
When i play and i wanna gank someone with 1 or more teammates and only cast a spell while they rightclick/attack it seems to me that the tower priority wil go to the hero with the lowest hp even though he is not supposed to be targeted what is kinda annoying if u wanna dive/mindgame someone .

And yeah it also happens on creeps when the tower see a creep with lower hp than hes hitting it wil change to the lowest one. What is realy annoying and shouldn't happen.

The tower ruins lasthits, because it changes creep-targets.

Since there's already a thread about tower aggression mechanics. I'll state my problem encountered here.

              Summary:
Top tower 1 not hitting me when I'm attacking it.

              Repro Steps:
Have your allied creep and enemy creep clash on in front of the top tower 1 and you attack it while the tower is hitting your creep. After your creep dies, the tower will still be attacking nearby creeps and not you.

              Result:
I was playing Lion and I went top lane.
My allied creeps were hitting enemy's creep in tower range.
I sneaked a few attacks and I accidentally hit it when it just killed an allied creep, so the tower was supposed to hit me, but it didn't.
Then I just continued hitting the tower while there are still a few allied creep left and realized that the tower isn't hitting me even though I kept attacking it.
It's just the top lane tower, mid and bottom lane doesn't have this problem.

              Expected Result:
The tower should be attacking me after it killed the creep it was attacking.

Once the tower has engaged a unit it is not supposed to change target until that the target either is dead or due to it being issued an attack command on a priority target such as a hero targeting another hero in range of the tower with a physical attack.

This pattern is identical to the one in DotA 1.

                Extension: It calculates priority targets according to the following list;
                1. Unit attacking allied hero
                2. Unit attacking the tower
                3. Unit attacking nearby creeps
                4. Units not attacking anything
                5. Siege units
The list is slightly lackluster as I compiled it quickly but still gives a good overview on how towers choose targets, if there are units fighting and you're not hitting the tower when it changes target then jolly good for you. Note that all units chosen to be the target are the ones closest to the tower.

I have however seen some weird occasions where the tower suddenly changes target with no notice and I have no idea why, this sometimes also happens with regular creeps and thus appears to be a more generic aggro problem rather than a tower specific one.

Yup, I'm familiar with the tower's mechanics in Dota 1. However, the problem in Dota 2 which I encountered is, I can keep attacking the enemy's tower as long as my allied creep is within the tower's range and the tower wouldn't hit me even after the tower's current target dies. Note that the creeps are not attacking the tower, only I am attacking the tower.

Hope I explained it well enough. I think I have a sample game which I played in Matchmaking. I'll try to find the ID tonight =)

The only thing which overrides the current target is forced attack commands due to hero focus.

The tower doesn't have some form of cache where is stores recent targets that could have become priority targets and it does not choose, apart from the above mentioned case, a new target until the current one has died which means that while the creeps are fighting you can attack the tower without getting attacked under the presumption that you stop attacking the tower when its current target dies.

If you continued to attack the tower after the target had died and there being no closer priority target without gaining focus then I'd be very interested in watching the match.
