  • Random is fucked up

Is the random system working as it's supposed to? I random every game i play
for past 20 games, I randomed lina like 5 times... usually 1 after another. for example, it goes something like this
    1. xxxx
    2. lina
    3. lina
    4. xxx
    5. xxx
    ....
    14. lina
    15. lina
    16. xxx
    17. xxx
    18. xxx
    19. xxx
    20. lina
    21. xxx

can someone tell me what's going on?

I know what you are saying and I experience very similar things, but posting this here wont get you anywhere because it is commonly believed that the RNG of Dota 2 is perfect and it simply gives us 'true random' values.

'True random' means randoming tidehunter 4 times in a row.

It also means counter helixing with axe 8 times in a row from 1 creep and not helixing at all for 30+ hits in a row from 6 creeps.

i have no idea about randoming heros, but the helix i believe follows Psuedo random distribution doesnt it? or is that only on crit / bash / chance on hits.

That's the wc3 system you are referring to. Dota 2 uses a different RNG system.

i wasnt aware, most of the dota forum says it was ported over as well, so..dota 2 uses "true random" now?

There is no official answer. There are older threads about RNG posted in these forums - search them up if you want.

The odds of randoming lina 5/20 games are low. However, they aren't that low and it's going to happen to someone at some point when you take an extremely small sample like 20. I wonder what your randoms are like out of your total games played and I wonder why you think a subset of 20 games is somehow statistically more relevent than your total games played.

Most people generally dismiss complaints about the RNG system because there are very easy, very fast, and very simple ways to achieve random-like numbers. Valve knows what they're doing and I see no reason why they wouldn't use one of these tried-and-true methods.

I wish I could get lina, but my random is like:

                2. bane

                15. bane
                16. xxx
                17. xxx
                18. xxx
                19. xxx
                20. bane
                21. xxx

I'm like "oh man, not bane again...". I've randomed Bane so many times that I didn't mind clicking that bugged out Repick button even though I knew my dota 2 is gonna crash after I click on it.

the real argument ir PRNG vs RNG.

The simple fact of the matter is the difference between the above has a direct impact on the balance of the game. That is the pressing concern here.

This argument is about randoming. Not about spin, bash, etc.

op, you dont understand the concept of randomization. randoming doesnt garantee you getting a different hero each time and it also doesnt prevent you from getting streaks.
the common mistake is, that you think that a 10% for something is equivalent to it happen once in 10 times. but that simply isnt the case.
the 10% chance gets approximated when you try for a significant number of times.
you tried 20 times, which is insignificant.
even an order of the same hero 1000 times in a row can be a random result.

this can happen, because every random selection is independant from the one before.

what you want, is a pseudo randomization. that is a randomization, that makes the result of each random test more forseeable.
for counter helix that would be (as long as counter helix doesnt trigger):
                      1. test: chance 15%
                      2. test: chance 20%
                      3. test: chance 30%
                      ...
as you can see, the chances in each test are depending on the tests before.

what you ask for, is not a randomization function. the randomization works properly, simply because it produces streaks like this. what you want, is a pseudo randomization.

i wouldnt mind "true random" for heros, but any % based abilities i would rather a PRD. i random on a regular basis, and i tend to end up with in heros. definitly int heros,

                        - based on total observation, and holds no offical grounds: i think the random is based off your current team comp. ive never gotten a carry when ever we have alrdy had 2, and ive always gotten a support when we have none. could be utter luck lol..
