    At the first place I want to announce that I am not sure about this one so please, don't eat me up if I'm wrong ;]

    So, I do post this thread because i think Illusion from Spirit lance gets wrong position when created. I think illusions in Dota 1 was created behind the target. By "behind" i don't mean as riki blink, always from behind, but behind as target is between you and Your illusion, and from what I remember (as said, i may be wrong, sorry if I am) Phantom Lancer could block heroes in trees and/or hit them more times as opponent hero needs to run much futher from illusion. It's doesn't work like this in Dota 2 because illusion spawns between you and enemy.

    DotA 1: (Lancer......Opponent.Illu)
    Dota 2: (Lancer......Illu.Opponent)

    So: In dota2 Your illusions is between You and opponent
    And in DotA i think illusion was behind the targen (Lancer..... Opponent.Illu)

    Do not have warcraft 3, so i can't check this by my own.

    Im also not sure but AFAIK the illusion created after it hits try to face the opponent, So if its a moving target there'll be no correct place to spawn the illusion (wich has his own collision size, so nearby units will interfere the spawn of the spear's illusion).

      I have just tested this out. It is a little strange...
      Well... On W3 DotA, the Phantom Lancer illusions from the Spirit Lance are always created at the bottom left corner of the target. If that very direction is already occupied by another object, then the Lance illusion is created on the nearest spot to that corner.

      At least it is random on Dota 2. I mean, why bottom left? What is the logic behind?
      If I had time, I would suggest it to be like the OP said on both DotA and Dota 2 on the PlayDota forums. Makes much more sense.

        If you're asking why the engine does that, it was simply coded to be offset in the same direction everytime.

        If you're asking why it was coded like that....ask Icefrog. Can be changed in Dota 1, but not to a random spawn location. It still has to be relative to something.

          Well, Phantom Lancer was probably my most played hero on DotA, and still I couldn't see this happening back then.
