  • Stun\Disable as assist ?

From what I noticed if damage is received from physical, pure or magic abilities, even if out of a certain range you get an assist. But to me it seems like if I stun (let's say shackle shot which has no damage) and completely setup a possible double kill for one or two teammates, I don't get an assist. This doesn't seem fair, since I assisted in their capture.

Haven't played D1 so I don't know, but was it the same there as well ?
From what I can tell, D2 detects stuns (as evidence by the sound clips).

Isn't the assists stat just there for people to feel better?

I believe it also shows player involvement (someone who jungles 30 minutes vs an "active" player), who participated in teamfights and so on.
You could say the same about kills as well. Let's face it: the real score that matters is the one next to the portraits, not in the scoreboard. The scoreboard kills are there for someone to say "hey thanks to me you have +14 kills". So I kinda agree\disagree with your comment

But he is right. The assist count is solely based on damage and is pure cosmetical. On the other hand the gameplay relevant assist gold is distributed solely on vincinity around the kill. The current behavior is the same as in Dota 1

Nah, none of those scores matter in the slightest. The only thing that matters is who's ancient blows up and who's doesn't.

It does matter if a non-player gets the kill, so... Yeah... But still same as dota 1. Quite sad

the number of assists is useless anyway since you get the gold for being in an aoe around the dying hero and not for dealing dmg to that hero.
