  • Roshan Ward Vision

In both DotA 1 and Dota 2, Roshan's Tarn is unable to be warded within the pit. However, in DotA 1, attempting to place a ward in the invalid area gives you brief, momentary vision into the pit (less than one second) without consuming a ward. In Dota 2, it will simply yield an "invalid location for ward" error message. This has strategic purposes: in DotA 1, a team could scout the other team engaging Roshan without having any vision-granting abilities from, say, the Scourge T1 Mid tower area using an observer ward.

As far as I could tell, this did not produce a visual of the ward being placed.

This might be an intended change; it's fixable in DotA 1, but rather hard to since Roshan's Tarn is not a rectangle aligned with the grid.

I will have to try this :P But it also reminds me - the rosh pit vision blockers aren't correct in dota 2 - when you're inside the rosh pit you can see everything in it, where you should be able to hide in the dark corners (GG juking) [probably because the lanterns blocked vision in WC3 DotA]

Sorry for the off-topic. When I have time I'll report it as it's own bug :P

Pretty much covered in this thread: http://dev.dota2.com/showthread.php?t=78730

And Icefrog stared at that thread one time before a patch so they are aware of the discrepancy. Don't really know why I know he was on that page, just happened to click on his profile at the time.

I wouldn't be terribly upset at all if this was considered an intended fix, but I'm just here to document changes.

Should I post this in Gameplay Bugs main?

where does it say it's intended or not? this interaction provided a very powerful support use of wards

In WC3, you can place a ward there, but it gets instantly removed and a new one is put in your inventory. However, the game still recognizes the ward being placed, even when it was removed immediatly. In Warcraft 3, vision updates in certain intervals (I don't know the exact interval), so vision gain/loss looks smooth. However, unit information is updated instantly. Because of this instant update, you see every unit within the vision range for literally just a split second. The fog of war never disappears, so you literally see Roshan and eventually enemies in there through the fog of war.

So this is just a bug caused by how the game's vision works and how the ward restriction was coded.

Report this on Playdota as a DotA1 bug instead.

ward isnt supposed to appear at all, its an issue with frog's coding knowledge, nothing more. Note: wards CAN'T be placed at pit. PLACED.
its called common sense. i'd rather say such simple mechanic being f*cked up in wc3 rather than dota2.
