nice catch.. confirmed. you need to position the camera on top of the mountian with the minimap, then just edge-pan the camera away, and you are zoomed out.

    Looks great! :P

2 more pictures confirming, also check what happends when you zoom in on the "zoomed out" view. horizont isnt rendered and look bugged.

No it'll destroy the planet earth if it gets implemented.

Not to mention that this would allow less skilled players to.. well... to do things! </sarcasm>

Don't forget about Pudge and Mirana being revealed and pinging the enemies' minimaps whenever they try to hook/arrow something, and runes glowing in the fog of war.

I encountered this but without knowing how, due to being disconnected. Nice spotting. Hopefully now it will be fixed since we found the culprit.

This was discussed before (on playdota.com) and I believe folks even gave a console command to zoom out the view. The reason why they said it wasn't cheating is because though it does indeed show more terrain on camera, it DOESN'T lift fog of war beyond the units' normal field of view. So, theoretically, you could zoom out to see the entire map in your screen if you wanted but the fog of war would still be there.

I think I had something like that in a game today as well, but I didn't do it on purpose, and I don't think I used the cliff side to zoom out. Here's a picture I captured off it:

                        Birdviewbug.jpg

When I watched the replay in player perspective I can't actually see my hero at the moment where the picture was captured. Match Id. is 8180438 if anyone want to check it out. Should this warrant a separate post by the way?

edit: getting zoomed out like that was really cool by the way. I felt much more in control of my hero when I got a bird's perspective of the battlefield.

I can reproduce this easily. Essentially the steps are:

                          1. Move the camera to the very top left of the map by edge scrolling
                          2. Double-tap the hotkey for "center camera on hero" (default F1)
                          3. Camera is now zoomed out and centered on the hero
                          4. Do not move the camera using edge scrolling or the zoom effect will be lost (use only F1)

Compare screen 1 with screen 2:
                          Before camera trick: dota0024.jpg
                          After camera trick: dota0025.jpg

My guess is that the camera height is dynamically calculated based on the current terrain. The top left of the map has mountains, so the camera raises. However, I think the height update calculation is only being done upon camera movement via edge scrolling. The camera height should instead be recalculated any time the camera is moved.

There is a huge difference there. Nice find of the bug guys.

CONFIRMED, happens occasionally in spectator games too, when just after joining a game to watch the "default' zoom on directed mode is the unzoomed one you describe. Swiching over to player perspective suddenly 'zooms in' again to the normal value.
