  • Game freezes for many seconds during the match

    Hello,

It is well known that the game usually freezes a bit during the hero pick and when they spawn on your map, but recently (the past few weeks), my game will completely freeze (including the ui, I can move the cursor but not click on anything, the game becomes a frozen picture) for any duration between 2-10 seconds, in a similar way that it freezes during hero pick. Sometimes I even die due to that, because the game server is still running.

Even on games hosted locally on my machine, this occurs. This rules out any latency issues, especially since my ping on the server I play on (US East) stays under 20 ms throughout the game.

Could it be due to a CPU bottleneck? I don't usually run background processes that consume a lot of resources. However, I do run a software called Throttlestop which basically disables any throttling on my CPU (I use a laptop) sometimes. I have experienced this freeze even when not running Throttlestop though, so I've ruled that out as well.

    Here are my system specs:

    ASUS VivoBook s400ca , with

Intel Core i5-3317U (ivy bridge) CPU @ ~1.70 GHz (4CPU's) (Throttlestop tends to overclock this)
    4 GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000 with an Approx shared memory of 1664 MB,
Graphics driver version 9.17.10.2932 (I'm pretty sure it's the latest one)

As specified earlier, I don't run heavy processes in the background, and my anti virus software does not suck my resources. I am able to run Bioshock Infinite at max settings @ 1366x768 resolution, so I am pretty sure I can run Dota 2 at decent settings as well (I currently run it almost maxed out, with shadows and textures set to medium).

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

This has been an issue for some users for a quite a long time. I've posted many times about the same symptoms that you are experiencing and have never received a reply from any developer.

It has been an issue for me since a patch sometime in February 2013. My guess is that it occurs when certain assets are loaded during the game. The freezing is shorter when Dota 2 is installed on an SSD.

Probably will never be fixed since the dev team has been reduced and all progress on dota 2 has been set aside for...nobody knows what.

Same issue. i7 ivybridge. 16gb ram. ati 7970 3gb. Ocz ssd.
Get a freeze randomly in game.
Game resumes after a few seconds and I have missed some gameplay. Happens on wireless and also when on wired.

Have been monitoring connection throughout the day and there do not seem to be any issues with my ISP.

Did not have any issues since the start of dota 2 beta, this started earlier this year and seems to be getting progressively worse.

Fps remains at constant 120. Ping also steady.

Console shows no real clues. Will copy it next time I play.

      Very very annoying.

        Asamoya,

Your game freezing is different than what this thread is referring to.

The issue that OP xpiozone is describing is characterized by: complete lock of the computer, no display of connection issues red text, all audio and video is frozen, user input is not possible during this time, freeze lasts approx 0.1 to 1 seconds and then the game resumes.

Also, how are you maintaining a ping while the countdown to disconnect message appears? That doesnt make any sense.

Is your computer ever overheating or getting too hot? This is the most likely cause of the freezing. Dota has a lot of things rendered on the spot, which is pretty hard on the computer. Your computer isn't particularly powerful (fairly weak in a sense), but it should play Dota alright. It isn't a dota specific problem, but my friend also had a similar problem and his laptop just died from overheating.

Pretty close, but my freeze lasts longer, from 1-10 seconds. On some days it happens a lot and on others it is barely noticeable. It has nothing to do with the connection, it even occurs on local games.

Nope, my CPU temperature usually maxes out as 80 Celcius, and usually stays below that. Yes, my laptop is weak, but this problem was not occurring until last month. Could it be due to the fact that I installed many other games on my system? Because I have. My HDD still has a lot of free space though.

As I have stated many times before in multiple threads describing this specific issue:

-It is not caused by lag.

-It is not caused by overheating.

The freezing is caused by an asset needed for an ingame event being fetched from the dota2 installation disk. For example, I played a game today in which I had 1 freezing event. I dropped a clarity on the ground. Before the clarity appeared, dota2 had a brief "Freeze", charterized by a locked frame and a pause in sounds. SteamApps\common\dota 2 beta\dota\pak01_023.vpk was accessed during this time. The length of the frozen screen is dependent on the time it takes your computer to find and load the game asset.

As to cause, I cannot tell you why dota2.exe needs to do this. I am not a developer. I can tell you that I have not experienced this issue in any other application on my computer. For example, I played through Bioshock Infinite with no performance issues whatsoever. Also, I have tried putting cl_forcepreload "1" in my dota2 launch options but have observed no change.

I can confirm this behavior. I can play a full game with no issues. Other times, I experience 3 or more freezing events. Bot games vs matchmaking games does not seem to make a difference.

I have an in built SSD of 24 GB on my laptop, on which windows is installed. Do you think there is space left for a dota 2 installation on it, and will it help reduce the freezing?

My windows directory comes in at about 20GB, so I would expect that if you are working with a 24GB drive, you will not have room left for the dota2 files. My dota2 directory weighs in at 12.7GB.

Sorry that was very badly worded, I was typing that on my phone.
There is no "red source game disconnection text" that would be normally expected if I was lagging for that duration.

When the issue occurred today, I screenshotted the console window, but I don't know if the text displayed is related to the problem or not.
I intend to keep screenshotting the console and see if there is any pattern -.-.

This has never happened to me until this most recent patch which took a bit to download. It'll do it like every 10-20 minutes and is very annoying (storm mid running into a DD invoker with double forge =/).

                        No lag message
                        The cursor moves without problems
Cannot scroll the map using mouse (moving to edges).
Everything else is frozen, can't click anything
When everything returns, the game skips forward however long its paused for.

                        Playing on AUS server.

Having the same issue as Asamoya and ReSublimity. Problems only started with the latest patch.
Any clues on what could be the cause?

Clearly it's not a connection issue; for me the problem persists even when playing bot practice in offline steam mode.

                              Some more screenshots.
I don't always get this error in the console, sometimes it just lags without any message in console...(and no red disconnection text either).
