  • Since Reborn is the main client Dota 2 won't launch from steam library

Since Reborn was made the main client I cant launch the game from the steam library. It seems to be a problem with the 64/32 bit detection. I run a 64 Bit Win10 System.
When I launch the dota exe from the folder, the 64 bit exe also won't launch the game, the 32 bit exe will, that is why I assume the steam launcher wants to launch the 64 bit version, which does, for some reason, not work.

No error code or anything given out.

    System Specs:

    Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 10240) (10240.th1.150819-1946)
    Language: German (Regional Setting: German)
    System Manufacturer: ASUS
    System Model: All Series
    BIOS: Default System BIOS
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz (8 CPUs), ~4.0GHz
    Memory: 16384MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 16324MB RAM

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce GTX 980 Ti
    DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
    Device Type: Full Device

I got the same thing, but since the last update neither 32bit nor 64bit will work

Update: When i first started dota last night via launcher it worked properly. When i launched it the second time that night I had the same Problem as before.

I am currently reinstalling the game, will update if that resolved the issue or not.

          • #6
Reinstalling did not fix the issue for me. Here is a thread with my included dump file.

It seems that Steam attempts to launch in 64bit DX11 mode by default. When launching manually from game/bin/win32/dota2.exe I have no issue.

I don't remember ever changing compatibility options for x64 dota2.exe, but on my system these are set to: Vista, Disable display scaling, Run this program as administrator - while the x86 dota2.exe having none.
That would surely be a problem on some systems if you can't be prompted by UAC.
So please check x64 dota2.exe with Alt+Enter or Right-click -> Properties and under Compatibility tab, clear all boxes (keep display scaling option if you need it) for both the first screen and the Change settings for all users one.

WilfordGrimley, your crash dump confirms my theory:
OS: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) version 6.1 (LimitedUser: no)
              PRIMARY_PROBLEM_CLASS: STATUS_PRIVILEGED_INSTRUCTION_ts3overlay_hook_win3 2+1771d

So you have dota2.exe running as admin, and teamspeak overlay probably as limited, and when it attempts to hook the game...BANG!
I have said this countless times, here's once more:
              - DON'T RUN GAME(S) AS ADMINISTRATOR (or follow the very bad advice of running everything as administrator including explorer, security will be zero but then you won't get into these kind of clashes)
              - DON'T ENABLE ANY EXTERNAL OVERLAYS (mumble, teamspeak, gpu monitor and other junk) IN FACT, PURGE ANYTHING THAT HOOKS INTO YOUR GAMES like some infamous game "boosters" coming from a freaking mouse driver...
