  • FPS Problems after restarting Steam. Only fixable by reinstalling Dota2.

    Hey guys,

recently (around thursday last week) I discovered an issue when trying to play custom games. Every custom map I had already downloaded only showed "Download Queued" and wouldn't let me play it. Uninstalling and trying to re-download the maps did not resolve the issue. Naturally I tried restarting Steam, which ended up making custom maps playable again. However, it resulted in a different problem. Dota's FPS were now varying wildly between the usual 120 and something very very low all the time.
I have now waited for a few days to see if the issue will resolve itself, but today I tried a few things. Uninstalling and re-installing Dota2 (either a clean install or with the old settings kept) will make the game run at a constant FPS again, but custom maps will still be on "Download Queued". Restarting Steam then makes custom maps playable but results in the FPS issue.

To demonstrate I made a video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4wSUt7NbgU

All the artifacts in the 2nd part happened because of Sony Vegas not being able to deal with the lags, they are not actually in the game. Funnily enough the artifacts actually make it look better than it is. In reality it is pretty much unplayable at this point.

All of the above happens regardless of -dx11, -gl, Win32 or Win64 client and I'm genuinely at my wit's end. Every other game works fine.
Currently I have the choice of either playing Dota with working custom maps but huge FPS issues or to play it properly but without custom maps. And as you can guess, having to uninstall and reinstall Dota everytime I only restart Steam/my PC is unacceptable.

    My System:
    i5-4690k
    8GB DDR3 PC1600
    Radeon XFX R9 280X Black
The game is currently installed on my SSD. The same issue occurs on the HDD as well though.

    Thanks in advance,
    Fatzke

    EDIT:
Because of the artifacts in the rendered video I decided to upload the raw footage from the laggy part as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juPNBcUaxl4

Tried this? https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comme...11_by_default/ - has worked for me (NO OPENGL INSTALLED)
Had massive lag before, now it runs smooth as fuck!

        Open console, write unsubscribe_all_game_modes.
Steam - Settings - Downloads - Download Region: pick another near-by region.
Grab Process Explorer, View - Show Processes From All Users.
Check stuff that runs with high %cpu and %memory usage, kill it. Fraps and other OSD's, too.
        Profit.

Also, use proper recording software like OBS.
There are guides around, but you can do without them by just following OBS prompts.
        Only three things to remember:
        1. Settings - Settings - Advanced: Keyframe interval = 4 (optimize for streaming and youtube uploading)
        2. windowed: Right click Scene - Add - Window Capture - click on Set base resolution
        3. fullscreen: Right click Scene - Add - Game Capture
        Troubleshooting crashes
Dota 2 Resources: autoexec.cfg reference / benchmark.cfg / Tweak it yourself (launch options, cvars) / useful batch files
No-Bling GlanceValue & FPS ++ NEW! Panorama hotkeys NEW! dota_primary_mm_language_override NEW TOGGLE_QUICKCAST_TP.bat NEW FIX LEGACY KEYS YOURSELF! NEW Toggle UI Animations OFF

As mentioned in my original post, same issue is observed with the 64-bit client and also with -dx11.

Unsubscribing from all game modes did nothing. Also there's nothing else running that would make my PC even break sweat. This issue is something reaching far deeper than just "other processes slowing down the computer". I would really like to know why this only comes up after restarting steam and thus allowing it do update...something, which in return complete fucks up dota but makes custom maps work.

Apart from that: OBS is terrible for recording. I have used it for years for streaming but it is not suitable for recording high quality videos.

          Thanks anyway.

This vegas stuff you posted is so much better quality wise. </sarcasm>

Anyway, let's go down the rabbit hole and see how "far deeper" it gets:
            - Alt-tab out of the game while experiencing the issue, unpack and run list_my_programs.bat and zip then post the resulting file from your desktop.
Above may or may not work on your system, it's harmless either way. But what would paint a closer picture is this:
            - open the game console and write:
            disconnect
            sv_cheats 1
            crash
And get the latest <steamapps>\common\dota 2 beta\game\bin\win<32or64>\dota2_2015_xxxx_xxxxxx_x _accessviolation.mdmp and zip then post it
            Troubleshooting crashes
Dota 2 Resources: autoexec.cfg reference / benchmark.cfg / Tweak it yourself (launch options, cvars) / useful batch files

This is just due to Vegas not being able to deal with a non-constant framerate in .avi containers. As you can see in the 2nd video the raw footage recorded with DXtory is flawless.

Here are the .mdmp and the .txt in one archive: Stuff.zip

              Thank you.

Well, it looks clean, nothing hooks the game directly.
Just update that very old amd gpu driver and uninstall radeonpro. Consider that tool dead and unsupported anymore.
And get rid of the only nag I found, the Intel management + smart connect stuff (also disable the device appearing under device manager).

It's really a shame you have issues with that hardware, while not even maxing settings.
Did you try making another account? Workshop issues are very often linked to the account configuration.

That actually did something, even though it made things just a bit more confusing. Here's a brief history of what I did and what happened:

I uninstalled Dota on the old account, proceeded to create a new one and did a clean reinstall of Dota on my HDD in the main steam folder using the new account. I then tested the game, restarting Steam, also switching accounts. Everything seemed to be working fine. Stable FPS and even custom maps were working. Because I want the game to run on my SSD I then attempted to uninstall and reinstall it with the new account on there. After a Steam restart however the issue occurred again. Another test, reinstall on HDD with new account --> working. If there was a fundamental problem with the SSD you'd think the problem occurrs all the time and not only after I restart Steam. Also any other game running on there works just fine.

Something I have noticed is that the "Downloadable Content" available for Dota2 differs for the old and the new account.
                  Old:
                  02cb047116.png
                  New:
                  ss (2015-09-16 at 03.58.45).png

When I uncheck both boxes on the old account before a clean reinstall of Dota then the issue comes up right away and not only after a steam restart. Deactivating them while Dota is installed doesn't seem to have any effect. The boxes are still checked after a Steam restart, also if I deactivate them with Dota uninstalled.

Also, while the issue is ongoing, there's a Dota2 Workshop item showing up in the Steam download list. However, it never actually gets downloaded. It just stays in queue forever, even when I try to manually make it download:
                  ss (2015-09-16 at 05.45.00).jpg

When I had it working on the new account and the HDD, it looked like this:
                  ss (2015-09-16 at 04.17.18).jpg

My current suspicion is that it has something to do with the directory where Steam itself is located. So the next thing I'd like to try is to swap things around, uninstall Steam and install it on my SSD and then have just a game library on the HDD.

                    Small update to this:
It worked. I backed up all my Steam game libraries and then uninstalled Steam, reinstalled it on the SSD. Proceeded to download Dota2 there with my original account and there seem to be no issues at all for now.

                    Thanks for your help.

See? That was not so hard You got much more chances to fix it yourself, than waiting for Valve to do something about it.
Nice of you to document the steps, since it might help others with the same issue.
