  • Dota 2 freezes when I start it.

    Hello.

Whenever I try to play Dota 2, it starts up and a black screen comes up and it stops responding and I have to ctrl alt del and end process.

I've tried downloading it 4-5 times and I've updated all my drivers and I've re installed my OS and it still will not work...
I've also verified game cache, I've tried starting it directly from steamapp folder but to no succes, I've tried starting it as admin.

So I'm wondering if anyone know a solution to my problems?

    I'm using windows 7.

Edit: The solution was to add -nod3d9ex -nod3d10ex to Properties -> Set launch options

could you try running the game after actually removing a graphics card (have only one mounted)? The game may have a problem with them (never tried games with a SLI configuration), and it may see "different things" between a SLI off setting and the actual removal of the card.

Also, you will require a more powerful power supply if you intend to keep both cards at maximum performance (they eat 900 watts together) - I doubt 100 watts is enough for an I7 and the hard drive + mainboard + ram (the processor alone eats 75 watts while IDLE - 128 watts when at work), although you're fine with only 1 card at maximum performance.

do you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2008/2010 installed (I suppose directX 10 comes with W7)?

is there a command to run the game as a window (from game run settings(parameters?) from steam) which you could use?

        out of ideas for now...

Its to much of work to remove my graphic card simply for one game since they are watercooled and then I would have to drain the system and remove some stuff.

And power supply isnt a issue.
I do not know where you got the info that two 480 takes 900w.

Here is a swedish review of two cards in sli

          http://www.sweclockers.com/image/dia...45f638c35e04c8

its measured from the wall (so only about 80-85% of that watt is what the computer gets) and then it takes 700w to run a complete system with a i7 950 (require more watt then i7 2600k)

I do have microsoft visuals and Im able to run dx9,dx10,dx11

            Launch Options
To open, right click Dota 2 on your Steam library, click Properties, and click Set Launch Options.

            -windowed -w # -h # -noborder -novid
Window mode with no border (and no start video), REPLACE # WITH YOUR DESIRED Width AND Height
            Have you tried this?
You may also want to try to add a small pagefile (MAY (not) help)

oh oh, just got an idea: where did you get your graphics drivers, from windows update or nvidia.com? If from the first one, get your drivers from here: http://www.geforce.com/Drivers

P.S. Have you tried running the game (with the command I suggested) by using the 640 by 480 resolution?

P.S.2: Try these NVIDIA control panel settings (with SLI set to ON or something): http://dev.dota2.com/showthread.php?...l=1#post107139

Look on your pc (preferably in \steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\) for dump files(which end in "file_name".dmp) and see if they can be opened with notepad and post the text here (or just provide a download link - I recommend www.mediafire.com)

In the meantime, you could create a steam support account (google for it) and post your issue there (just in case nobody can help you in a decent amount of time - I for one have done my best...(and still try))

Edit: try the following game launch command (just try it): -nod3d9ex (and -nod3d10ex afterwards). Note that there must be a space between commands (like the space between "-noborder" and "-novid" from my previous posts)

                  Thank you very much!

I tried running in 640x480 and didnt help, and I tried with sli on, couldn't find the dump file and Steam support will not help with dota 2
                  "Hello,

A staff member has replied to your question:

                  Hello,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

We do not currently offer technical support for Dota 2."

But your suggestion with -nod3d9ex -nod3d10ex did help and now I'm able to play the game so again huge thank you!

you can try removing the -nod3d9ex (leave ONLY -nod3d10x) to see if you can play with directX9 (instead of 8 what you currently have). Glad to help

If this is a "common" issue, can we have this (lucky) sollution added to the sticky for issues with dota2?
