    Crash to desktop, game still running

    I'm having a crash problem that I can't resolve.

    Basically, I'll start a game and play but randomly after maybe 10 minutes or so, the game will freeze for about 30 seconds to a minute. The computer will then recover but the game gets minimized and only shows the desktop with the game cursor visible. The game continues to run and I can still hear the game sounds but when I try to go back into Dota 2 from the taskbar, nothing happens. I can't do anything else in this state except for opening the task manager and force closing Dota 2. Windows error reporting shows it as APPHANG.

    I've tried turning off and on vsync, have newest video drivers, updates, etc. My computer specs should be more than enough for this game:

    Intel Core i3 2120
    ASUS P8H61-M
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    120GB Crucial M4 SSD
    Gigabyte Radeon HD 7770 (factory OC'ed)
    450W Antec VP450 PSU

    I play the game at 1920x1080 with all graphics maxed out. I also play Diablo 3 (maxed out at 1920x1080) and this has NEVER happened regardless of how long I play for. Help?

    Well I fixed the issue. Seems like Gigabyte recently put out a new BIOS for the 7770 OC and so far so good. I think the issue might have also been indirectly related to heat (even though no other games were crashing) as the BIOS seemed to have up'd the fan speed on the GPU.

      WTF, I have the same issue now! But everything is ok before this week!

        DOTA 2 desktop crash

        I can lauch the game, hear the normal sounds My mouse behaves as if im in game, but... i still see my desktop!! If I use alt tab, and reselect dota 2 it gives me a 1 sec black screen and then returns to my desktop (altho my interface still behaves as if i am in game, hear menu options if i hover in the right corner etc..)

        Tried reinstalling dota, rebooting updating drivers but so far no good..

        Last week the game worked fine..

          Please write your system specs for future reference.

          Make sure, that the solution above doesnt already solve your problem.
          Please check out this thread, it lists a couple of tech solutions and report back if anything has worked.

            same problem here. i have an ati 4870 1gb and i run at max setting. no problem with other games.
            its the most frustrating bug. coz for me its random it does not occur at a certain time all the time . for example it happened after ban/picking heroes, it has happened when someone planted a sentry, other times with no apparent reason.

            after the lag happens , the game used to minimize. then i disabled the aero theme from win7 and now it doesn't minimize any longer , but after 20-30 secons the game seems to recover , but i see no image. only a black screen and the dota 2 cursor. i can hear my hero responding to move commands and even spells , but i cant see anything.

            checked the big fixxes thread but i didnt find anything like this. what di u guys do trying to solve this bug ?

                  Have same problem.
                  After some time in game or watching other game dota just crash on to desktop.
                  I must close game in Task Manager and start it again, then i can reconnect.
                  Problems start about 2 weeks ago
                  CPU: Intel C2D E8400 @ 3,7
                  GPU: AtiRadeon HD4850
                  MBO: Asus P5W
                  DDR: 2x2GB DC Kingston
                  Resolution:16:10 (1680x1050)

                        I have this problem too, been having it since I first started playing Dota 2 on a brand new computer (built a month ago). Had no problems when I played it on my notebook with a Radeon mobile.

                        AsRock Z77 Extreme 4
                        Intel i3 3220-k
                        Corsair Vengeance 1333MHz 2x4Gb
                        XFX Radeon 7750
                        Corsair GS 600W PSU

                        Tried probably everything, all troubleshooting methods posted on this and other forums. No overheating issues, drivers are up-to-date (tried latest stable and beta), Windows 7 x64 is up-to-date (tried reinstalling), motherboard BIOS is up-to-date. I keep crashing to desktop no matter what I try. Only thing I have yet to find is someone who experiences the same issue on Darksiders 1 (on Steam), because these are the two only games that crash here.

                          - try memtest
                          - try play on lowest setting, if no error occured, slowly up the setting
                          BAD person is someone who only think that he/she is a pro and others are noob and then blame the Matchmaking challenge.
                          GOOD person is someone who accept the Matchmaking challenge and succeeded getting a teamwork in his/her team

                            Like I said, I tried probably everything. Memtest ran OK, I played with all the settings and nothing.
