  • Dota 2 and NVIDIA Optimus (525M) problem

    Manufacturer: Dell (Notebook)
    CPU: Intel i3 - @2,1 GHz
    RAM: 6 GB
    GPU: NVIDIA 525M (1GB) / Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 [Optimus technology]

    NVIDIA driver version: 310.70
Dota 2 launch options: -novid -console

My performance has always been stable (almost one year) excluding the Frostivius event which dropped my fps significantly. Even after it has finished, it seems that my fps got lower and much more unstable than before. I tried almost everything known to man in order to improve my FPS and overall game smoothness. I usually run Dota 2 with all graphics turned either low or off and have only Render Quality on 100%. I experimented with turning Vsync on and off but it doesn't affect the performance since I rarely reach more than 60 fps anyway.

In one of my desperate efforts to investigate the source of the problem I ran the Nvidia GPU activity tool and it seems that Dota 2 doesn't trigger my Nvidia GPU but instead runs with the Intel one. I am not sure if it has always been like this or at a previous point Dota 2 ran with the Nvidia GPU. At first I thought that my drivers are not OK although I always update to the latest ones. I ran Mass Effect 3 to see if this game will trigger the Nvidia GPU and in fact it did. Here are two screenshots to see the difference:

I thought that my Nvidia Control Panel settings were reset/screwed up somehow but when I checked they were the same as months ago:

As you can see, the Nvidia GPU is forced to run Dota 2.

Does anyone have the same problem with the Optimus technology (400M/500M/600M series)? Is this a known issue or am I the only one who experiences this?

How to start the GPU activity application:

Add -nod3d9ex to the launch options. Nvidia Optimus support is a bit screwed up right now.

The Nvidia GPU is still not triggered and the performance is the same since I have to play in borderless window because -nod3d9ex crashes the game if I alt-tab.

I updated to the latest Nvidia drivers (310.90) and still to no avail...
It seems that nobody cares about notebook users.

I don't give a flying f*ck if this is a well known issue. The only thing I care about is it getting fixed.

And no one gives a fuck if you create 1000 posts apart from banning spammers on the long end. The issue is known so wait for a fix...
If you think I've closed or deleted a post unjustified, feel free to PM me and I'll explain it to you/discuss it with you further.

I have a fix for the reborn issue:
saw numerous incorrect posts about the fix.

1.) make sure dx11 is installed if not install it.
2.) open up nvidia control panel
                    3.) manage 3d settings
4.) select the program settings tab

5.) now comes slighty more complicated part

you need to add the dota 2 exe to the list

                    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\game\bin\win64\dota2.exe

that is the default location if its a 32 bit computer then win32 at the end

                    6.) select your nvidia processor
7.) open game and enjoy if you find this useful please reply down below.
