Actually, when I opened this thread I did it because I saw a livestream where the Windranger in the Killed By portrait had the dead stare as well, so at least that bit is older than the October 8th patch.

Really? Hmm. I'll update the first post on this page.

@ herrshaun: Thanks for the info! I'll update the first post on this page.

Anyhoo, I'm here because I've decided to try out the Custom Games mode. I played "Adventure Mode" by [SK]-死MAJORA死 (I hope linking to its Workshop page isn't considered advertising) as Skywrath Mage, and I noticed that while his mouth was kinda glitchy, HE HAD THE FULL RANGE OF FACIAL EXPRESSIONS HE HAD BEFORE AND CLICKING ON OTHER THINGS DIDN'T BREAK THEM! Here are a couple of pictures (in the first one, he's smiling, and in the second one, he's aggro):

      2014-10-14_00020.jpg2014-10-14_00038.jpg
(As you can see in the second one, Arcane Bolt is also very glitchy-looking [at least on this map?], but that's obviously another issue entirely.)

So, has this bug FINALLY been (mostly) fixed (there was a patch download before I played today!), or is the Custom Games mode unaffected by it, possibly since it uses a separate "Dota 2" exe provided by the Workshop Tools Alpha? I should also mention that I disabled Aero on my Desktop (I play "Dota 2" on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit), because I've read in a Steam Guide to do that if the Custom Game didn't seem to launch, and I had to do that. Just tossing that in there in case that's somehow a factor.

EDIT: Me again, I just played a regular Bot match with Skywrath Mage...the facials are still broken in the regular game :

      2014-10-14_00051.jpg2014-10-14_00054.jpg

Hmm, so the "Adventure Mode" Custom Game (at least) is unaffected (yay!), but the regular game still is (the "Adventure Mode" map was last updated August 22nd, BTW...about a month before the facials were broken; just saying in case...).

I had Aero on during the regular match, BTW. Also, in "Adventure Mode", the Empyrean Staff that I have equipped was replaced by the default staff, but it still works in the regular game. (I didn't attempt to equip it in the Custom Game...I didn't even notice at first!).

I wonder too, however, if it's exe-related. As I said before, the Custom Games use a 64-bit "Dota 2" exe provided by the Workshop Tools Alpha...does the game normally launch in 32-bit?

      What do you all think?

Yep, the Workshop Tools run through a different version of Dota, one that comes with also comes with enhancements for 64-bit users among other things.

          A-HA!

While typing this, I checked out my "Dota 2" folder on my computer, and found a "dota_ugc" folder in it, which is what you're saying. The "bin" folder had two folders for 32- and 64-bit Windows.

Which raises new questions...is the Custom Game version of "Dota 2" somehow older than 6.82? Are there differences between the UGC and main/test clients' packages (that might also help explain why the Empyrean Staff was replaced by the default, but the Divine Ascension costume that Skywrath was wearing obviously worked, as shown in the screenshots in my last post)?

EDIT: Last night, I messed around with Custom Games some more (the aforementioned "Adventure Mode", plus "Windranger Adventure" by Boomer the GUY G[A]MER and "Dota 2 - 6.81 Map" by Shadowsake. I'm thinking that there's definitely older packages in the UGC version of the game, because I gave Windranger the Array of Tranquility set, but in "Adventure Mode", she had her default everything on.

BTW, here's something I shoulda mentioned WAY sooner, but one thing I've noticed about Windranger since 6.82 is that her head is tilted weird in her animated portrait. Here are two comparison shots (the first is from quite awhile back in the main client; the second is from last night in "Windranger Adventure"):

The Workshop Tools shipped before 6.82, so Valve shipped it with the Dota version available to them at that point - a version with 64-bit features, but not one that updates with the main client. It's kinda like how the test & beta clients function in that regard. It's probably gonna vanish as the Workshop Tools get their proper release and become compatible with the normal Dota client we all use.

That also means reporting bugs from the Workshop Tools version probably shouldn't be mixed up with bug reports for the main client, and might not even be necessary if that Dota version is just a placeholder until the Workshop Tools can be released.

              Yeah, I've gotcha.

Anyway, earlier today, I decided to try playing without any Equipment, Wards, Loading Screens, Announcer Packs, and HUDs, just to see if playing vanilla makes any difference. It doesn't.

I genuinely wouldn't expect bugfixes until next year, they even skipped Diretide to work on some bigger updates scheduled for end of this year/beginning of next year.

Maybe in Spring Cleaning 2 - Electric Boogaloo.

I hope it doesn't come to that!

EDIT: Thinking more about it, though, I think you do have a point. EDIT #2: Only time will truly tell, though...

Anyhoo, I played as Mirana earlier today, and even though I didn't left-click anyone/anything else, her idle facials spontaneously broke?! (I didn't notice this until my second death; looking through my screenshots of the match, I don't know what exactly triggered it.)

There's a bug with dead heroes missing head cosmetics in their portraits (leading to bald Crystal Maidens and headless Juggernauts and the like), which would imply the game reloads your hero when they die, and that process can fail as described by me or as mentioned by you. Maybe it's a reloading process implemented for cases like players swapping heroes, which will only update cosmetics to correspond with the new player upon death.

So it sounds like there's a general error in that quick reloading process that happens ingame. Valve might end up revamping the complete buffer system anyway because it frequently messes up in Replays when you use the 10s Rewind function, leading to missing particle effects, floating buildings and all sorts of other nonsense. The upcoming 64-bit version of Dota would probably also load things differently when it has access to more RAM. Maybe some alpha code of that 64-bit version got mixed up with the public release (pieces of unreleased hero files are being discovered by fans all the time after all) and now Dota tries to reload facial expression data from a space where they would be stored in the 64-bit version, but aren't in the current 32-bit version?

I'm sure Valve doesn't need wild customer speculations to pinpoint the actual problem, just throwing out some possible reasons for why this isn't simply being hotfixed.

I still don't know for sure exactly what went wrong with Mirana last time. :-/

That's an interesting theory about the buffer system, though!

Yeah, the main client already has some mixed up files from the Workshop Tools Alpha version like the Custom Games button in the Play section (which doesn't do a whole lot), so even if it's not related to caching, it's probably *something* from that version that's incompatible with the main client and will probably get fixed once the Workshop Tools version is fully ready for release.

The weird thing is that today I played Windrunner twice and in both occasions her portrait was fully functional at the start, but a minute later it became bugged again. So they are still broken.

Wait, as in "fully functional", do you mean she was laughing and cringing and stuff for awhile there? Or do you mean neutral expressions?
