  • [Request] Lua event 'player_say' to capture player chat

    One of my game modes, Pictionary, relies on capturing player chat to function. Currently the only way to capture player chat is through Scaleform. Would love to see a player_say Lua event to capture player chat.

    An upcoming update will implement the "player_chat" event as described here. Would this fit your requirements?

      Perfect! As long as it is able to capture '-' commands as well.

        awesome, we could also create our own custom chat system with this so that whispers/guild chat would be possible! (if we can block chats from appearing in the default chat)

          Hi, I was testing this function out and the userid seems to be off by 1. Saying something on player 0 will show the msg having a userid set to 1.

            Userid is not the same thing as PlayerID, but a different Dota 2 Server identifying number for a connection. It doesn't always match up to a userid in any specific transformable way, but it is possible to match userid to playerid based on the player_connect_full event. You can see how I provide this in barebones:


            This updates a table called vUserIds to provide a userID -> player entity association whenever a player connects to the game (or reconnects). This table can be used in the player_chat event in order to get the actual player involved in sending the chat:

              player_chat has seemed to be broken by a patch around the 14th of February. Is someone else able to confirm that it only works in tools and not on the workshop.
