You realize you're comparing Minecraft's pre-planned pricing structure (increasing from alpha->beta->release to benefit early supporters)
to a beta that offers a buy-in as a desperate resort prior to the official free2play release..

    Simple facts:

dota 2 will be free to play.
if you want to play now, you need to be invited to the closed beta.
if you do not have any friends with invites, you need to either buy early access from the dota store or wait patiently for open beta. Simple, really.

Fact-Check! The Dota 2 Invite is not $60. It not only launched at $40, but is now priced even cheaper at $30.

If your desire to join the beta is so high, obtain an invite. If your morals are worth more than your money, buy the bundle. If you're cheap, get a second-hand invite.

Complaining that you don't want to buy it second-hand but also don't want to pay regular price, what do you expect?

It was made to cost that much also because they need the money for the servers, Dota 2 isn't completely open as of yet because the servers wouldn't be able to handle that many players, the invites that are sold by third parties are invites that Valve themselves sent out, which means: All the invites available are under Valve's control, that simply refers to the fact that Valve knows exactly how many players could ever be expected to join the "beta", and they're ready for that many players, and maybe some more which would join were they to pay for the extra invites that Valve themselves hadn't issued out yet.

To make it simpler, you could get one of the invites that Valve already gave away for FREE (the ones they intend and expect people to have so that they can play), or you could buy one off Valve itself and add one single unit into their expected maximum player-count available at any given time. This was made so, just so that, in the rare case many people wanted to play and the free invites were already sold out to others that bought them for 5$/10$, then if they really wanted to play so badly, they could buy an invite from Valve, and join the "beta" even though the actual population slots are maxed out, it's like getting into an airplane after it's already full, you're obviously expected to pay more, for the hassle and because the plane wasn't designed to have you in it.

Once again, the items were probably added as an attempt to justify the price without looking like a greedy company, but the price itself is justified by the fact that the money goes into getting more servers to handle for when the game goes out, or to simply increase the player capacity to send out another batch of invites to other lucky fellows that patiently waited.

Make it so you can buy yourself into Dota 2

I have a lot of friends that want to play Dota 2, but they cant since they don't have a beta key and they have to buy it of a scumbag on eBay. Make it that you are able to buy yourself into the beta for around $10, that way it will eliminate the mass amount of beta keys on eBay and in the blackmarket and Valve will also get money. Don't say you already can by, buying the Dota 2 Invite on the Store, its $60 and people don't buy it for the invite, they buy it for the items that comes with it, that is why it is $60. It is also to easier to buy a key off ebay for $5 if you just want to play and dont want the random crap that comes with it.
