  • "GiveVision" suggestion for custom abilities/items

    I'm surprised something like this doesn't already exist within the workshop tools. There's no easy way to create an ability/item that provides vision in an area. Right now the only way to do this is by creating a custom unit and having the ability spawn the unit, or by creating a projectile.

    Here's how I think the command should work.

    "GiveVision"
    {
    "Target" //Standard target options
    "DayVision" //Day time vision
    "NightVision" //Night time vision
    "Teams" //Can define which team can see the given area
    "Duration" //How long the vision should last
    "UnobstructedVision" //Boolean value
    }

    Actually this is how it's been done in-game as well. A dummy unit is used as the "viewer" that allows the team to see in that area. Several game modes, such as Pudge Wars, use this technique especially. I think it's just how vision is calculated in the game (which requires an entity or unit to do the viewing), but I could be wrong.

      But is that how things like Invoker's Sunstrike and Clockwork's Rocket Flare are done?

      There's an entity that's supposed to reveal the FoW in a radius that's available in Hammer, but I have no idea how to call upon it in LUA and I haven't found anything online that does this.

        I gather that creating dummy units to provide vision is largely a holdover from Warcraft III mapmaking.

          Since I don't have the source code for Invoker's or Clockwork's spells, I can't say that it is indeed how these spells work. But from what I know about dummy units, this is very much a possibility (ie. wards use dummy units; there was an exploit related to the exploitation of the dummy unit that gets spawned when attempting to place a ward, for example) and has been actively used in several game modes as an adequate alternative.

          Also, I believe the entity you're referring to is strictly for map trigger - related purposes (don't quote me on that, though!). I have only seen examples of it being used with Hammer triggers (there are a few map examples Valve provided with a recent Tools update), so I'm not sure if it's usable with scripts beyond activation/deactivation of an already-placed one in the map.

          I don't have experience with the WC3 editor, but this could very much be the case as most RTS games/editors (ie. Age of Empires/Mythology editor) use some sort of editor-only dummy units for vision revealers and such.

            In WC3, you can just apply fog modifier. I was really disappointed nothing like that is on DotA 2.
