  • [Confirmed] Tranquil Boots combine into RoB when "quick-buying" items.

If you have Boots and a Sobi Mask in your inventory, and then navigate the Buy Menu to purchase [right click] Tranquil Boots: you'll find that the game doesn't give you Tranquil Boots at all, but instead, combines your Sobi Mask into a Ring of Basillius

Thus we can deduce that the Buy Menu simply adds the items to your Inventory, which is silly, because what if some of the incoming items form other recipes? ...As illustrated in the example above; this unwanted-combination of items needs to be fixed before this game leaves BETA, because [in this example] the player intended to purchase one item, but was erroneously given another.

Issue "A" is the one described by Acid Snow: You hold item A and item B, both of which need of item C to complete their combining. Then you go to the shop interface and right-click (complete buy) item D (upgrade of A), which implies buying item C. Instead, you get Item E (upgrade of B, that circunstancially needed item C to be upgraded).

This is the issue that needs to be fixed ASAP. That is not just the system being unintuitive, but downright malfunctioning. You are giving the game a concrete buy order, and it fails to comply to it, since you are not selecting to buy the item needed for both upgrades, but an specific upgrade instead (in Acid Snow example, he specifically ordered to complete-buy Tranquil boots, but got Basilius instead).

Issue "B" is the one brought up by Flexo, and regards item-combining priority. You have item A and item B, both of which need item C to be upgraded. You buy Item C, and you get either item D (upgrade of A) or item E (upgrade of B). This is the system being unintuitive, but objetively working just fine. The AI is not a physic, therefore it can't possibly know which item the player wants. While this (and the whole combining priority) is an issue, it takes a secondary place in relation to the problem posted by Acid Snow (because the game didn't work incorrectly, it just chose one of two valid options).

In any case, regarding the big issue, I have done some testing and confirmed that it is not an isolated case. All of the items I have tested so far present the same problem, some cases one item having "priority" over the other, some cases being the position of the components the deciding factor (from top left to bottom right).

    Preference:
    1. Vladimir will always have preference over Tranquil Boots (if only the Ring of Regen is missing from both items), whether you choose to complete-buy either of them.
    2. Shadow Blade will always have preference over Force staff (Quarterstaff missing from both)
    3. Crystalis will always have preference over Blademail (Broadsword missing from both)
    4. Sange will always have preference over Power Treads (Belt of Strength missing from both)

Position (top left to bottom right):
    1. Hand of Midas and Armlet (If Midas recipe is positioned last, Armlet is completed; otherwise, Midas is).
    2. BKB and Sange (It even happens if you have all the components of BKB/Sange except for the Ogre Club, and then complete-buy the other one).

It would be safe to assume that all other possible combinations also suffer from this bug.

I have a 2 javelins and a relic. When I buy demon edge what do I get? mkb or rapier?

...Screwed? Because the game's purchasing system is flawed?

My point is this: I purposefully clicked on Tranquil Boots in the goddamn buy menu, yet I got something else. This simply means the game still needs some polishing before reaching retail, because noobs won't tolerate these confusing errors.

In the 7yrs I've been playing DotA, I think I've built a Rapier maybe ~7 times (but used it more often than that since others have bought and dropped it).

I should of been a little more specific. When you are holding 2 javelins and a relic, even if you click on the MKB in the shop you will get a rapier. Much like the ring and tranquil boot problem

Yea, I've been done over by this - had a basher, went to buy a FULL rapier from the side shop but of course it gave me an Abyssal and a Demon Edge. Useful.

A pseudo fix would be allowing all auto assemble items to be disassembleable.

I'm not sure this "pseudo fix" would actually be a fix

I will further clarify, to avoid any kind of misunderstanding, that this testing was not done by buying the missing component, but by complete-buying (right click) the two recipes of each case. So appearently, the game does not gives you the completed item as a whole, but instead somehow condenses all the missing components in your inventory (allowing for item priorities to conflict).

It would be safe to assume that all other possible combinations also suffer from this bug.

                            Nice, after two months finally^^

Something which I think might be related:
Have two mantles of int in your inventory, then buy 2 (complete) Null Talisman while you're not in your base (so items are put on your stash) very fast (i.e. just doubleclick the item in the shop), then it will not buy all components (2 recipes, but only one circlet).
Didn't want to create a new topic about it as I didn't find it that important to fix.

Adding to the sticky now doesn't mean it wasn't acknowledged before. This is a very old issue, not just from two months ago.
