I think anyone unhappy with the direction Valve is taking with Dota 2 needs to take a step back and just look at what they've done to the game so many of us played as a WC3 custom map. They are focusing on hero cosmetics instead of bug fixes, removed pretty much any indication of individual skill or ranking, and are now matching experienced veterans of the game with players with a handful of wins. I just had a game with a pa who was on his second game. I have over 1100 wins.
I think it's beyond clear Valve is moving Dota towards a casual gameplay environment. The hidden player rankings are to provide a VERY general guide for matchmaking, but in the end the search range is so wide it may as well not exist. I do not think they can compete against an already established competitive MOBA game like LoL (even though it came after the original DOTA), and so are trying to capture a more broad market, and capture League players who do not want a ranking assigned to them.
If you want competitive, ranked gameplay, I think it's time to accept the fact that Dota 2 will not provide it, and it's time to find something else.
