  • Should and can we make RD the most played mode instead of AP?

There's a huge problem with AP mode since the creation of Dota.

Let's compare AP and RD mode.
In RD, players take turn to pick from a range of 20 heroes, if you random (by not picking), you don't get extra gold which is fair. Swapping of heroes is allowed.
In AP, players can pick any hero at any time, random is allowed and you get extra 250 gold for that. Swapping of heroes is allowed.

AP mode is the roots of all the imbalance and tryhards. BTW, tryhards are due to imbalance so, to make it simple, we can just say imbalance. Majority of the players probably will get more fun in AP games because they wanna choose from unlimited range of heroes and they like the extra 250 gold from getting a random hero. However, with that kind of mindset, there's no real "gg". Players probably say "gg" because they are use to it and don't even mean it. Even if they mean it, it's not even close to a good game. Dota is an RTS game after all, playing AP makes it less like an RTS.

I don't suggest playing CM in pub games because the captain can't execute his plan properly. After all, you're playing with strangers in pub.

So, the question is, "Should Valve find a way to encourage people to play RD games instead? If yes, how?" It's difficult but surely, there's something we can do.

Problem in that you can't trust anyone, so in ap you pick dead last after everyone picked to make sure you have the best shot at winning, rd is better with your friends but with strangers you just cant afford the chance of picking first

If everyone would be competent in ap few people might random first or pick op heroes then rest would wait forever to counter pick.

Before you say why so tryhard, well if you got counter picked and enemy is remotely on your level, you will lose.

Tried RD today, my team picked Void, PA, and AM, needless to say this is the last time I'm playing this mode.

In RD, you're supposed to be able to afford to pick first since players take turns to pick in a good format. Your teammates would get something good.

That's the problem and I hope we don't have that.

Of course and that's also why I made this thread.

i'd be fine with an AP where you take turns picking... My problem is with RD that with a limited pool I can't pick a hero that I can play AND fits the role needed.

I prefer cm by far and i only play cm, picks are sometimes bad even in cm and in rd you have to adjust a lot and every single person should pick what is best in that situation, not what he likes. The biggest problem maybe is that most players who play this mode, play it only occasionally and have no idea how to play it or care to think about it, and the most guys who do probably deselected this mode because of terrible picks.

Also there is a little thing called game dodging what you can only do if you don't have a hero.

No just play what you want ffs. It's not like you have to queue too long to find a RD game

Honestly, I don't mind queuing for 10 minutes to get an RD game but I can only play in SEA without lag and here, I queue forever (no RD game).

Modes other than AP and probably CM will have a loott of queue times in the sea, and RD being the least favored mode of all imo. I only played rd once and that is with a 4 man stack, with our plus one picking up a hero that doesn't really fit into the lanes (i think a TA (pick #4) when there is already a mid and safe lane (pick 2 and 3) carry picked. Won the game somehow because the opponent's pick isnt all that great too. Overall RD DOES somehow feel like playing a little more of a serious game, but that doesn't prevent unfitting picks of 5 carries etc etc.

AP somehow is a mode that says do what you want anyhow you want it. Makes it possible to execute specific combos but the problem here isn't at all solved.
I never found a workaround regarding picks that may lead towards flaming/griefing than playing with friends.

It doesn't matter what mode you play... the Matchmaking will "balance" the game.
If your (win-lose)>0 => high chance of losing a game
(win-lose)<0 => you can pick almost any hero and still have a good chance to win
(win-lose)=0 => try your best to win the game. this is where the team play counts the most.
The (win-lose) shows off mostly after 3 games (+-3)

So the mode doesn't matter at all.
But usually AP = noobs that play the same hero over and over again... OR noobs that test new heroes... OR (rarely) Pros that pick their best hero and make a difference.

                    RD is a smaller CM
AP is always the quickest que.
If you see Random pick in AP => Noob having fun with any hero
Or PRO having fun with extra gold.

Best time to use Random hero pick is BEFORE the team picked any heroes...So they can adjust their picks to your random hero.
                    This is how Dota2 games should look like! Game 1_Game 2_Game 3_Game 4_Game 5_Game 6

Not as if you lose 100 or 150 gold when you swap after having randomed, ACTUALLY.

RD is garbage, as is SD. AP is okay. Fact is the best mode BY FAR in pubs, is CAPTAIN DRAFT but Valve haven't implemented it yet for some reasons. In case you weren't aware of that dota 1 mode; it's random draft BUT with 2 bans for each team and that makes ALL the difference.
