  • Please add some sort of language or region lock as an option.

Made an account just for this because I didn't know where else to vent my frustration and seek change.

I play on NA East/West servers and an endemic problem is the amount of people who those of us here in NA are unilingual cannot communicate with, usually from SA but sometimes Asia. Anyways the point is there is no communication when half the team cannot understand each other. I know there are problems with the SA server and I am not saying that people from other regions should be blocked from queuing in NA. All I am asking is the option to queue based on region or something similar. Again this is simply a communication issue that I, and many others would like to have the option of avoiding. If you do not care about it then you do not have to use it, just like all the other queue options, but please Valve add this in.

Even reddit agreed that language barriers are a problem. Given that Valve has thrown the most obvious solution out - region locks - the next best thing IMO is to match players based on Steam language setting. Let the lazy, selfish assholes who check 6 regions and 3 languages play wherever the hell they want to play. But if they play the game in Spanish or Russian, they aren't getting matched with people who play the game in English.
We need a player review system like Overwatch for DotA 2. Get real people to judge communication abuse, intentional skill abuse, and intentional feeding.

Play on US WEST. We get better ping on US EAST, most of us play there.

Shouln't before region lock come a server for latin americans? Its been two years and we still have no server.

Language selection is not beeing taking on to account while queueing. I can select spanish and you select enlish and we can still get matched together.

            Region lock = RACISM.

Just because you are not from the US or GB it doesn't mean you cannot speak good English.

I tried that before: check both US East and US West. My queue times did reduce, but the frequency of Russians in my games increased significantly. I decided the shorter queues weren't worth that.

Hence my suggestion: you can play on US East if you want, but if you play the game in Spanish (Steam language setting), you aren't playing with me, though if we did queue together, I would not have a problem with you because we could communicate. My problem is with those assholes who check English but can't and won't speak it beyond "you suck" and "report."

                  Thanks for the laugh.

Also uh deal with it you only need to know 10 words or so to establish teamwork. Never have I, with english speakers, heard or communicated myself anything more than "go on X" and sometimes adding a variable like "after I ult". You seem to be expecting complex commands when the game already provides a universal language. Push, dive, stack mean the same thing in every country you're just being ignorant if you think his or her language was the issue and not your or their skill at the base level.

Always nice to see Valve Knights defend the right of lazy, selfish assholes to queue on 6 regions and 3 languages.

                    Except

                    1. it was the issue because this was a Captain's Mode game, and the Captain could not ask me who I wanted to play because he spoke no English.

                    2. they did not even know how to say "go on X" or "after I ult." The only English they knew was "you suck" and "report."

I'm laughing at reddit as a whole. The joke was that you used that as a source.

What you encountered was a dumb asshole. Those exist everywhere. You're telling me ban spectre and pick clock were foriegn words to the captain? Please.

You missed the forest for the trees then, and you don't appear to know what "even" means as a modifier. But I'm happy to explain it for you. Reddit has a well known pro-Valve bias; by default, reddit tends to support whatever Valve does. If you complain about Valve, expect to get massive downvotes. Despite that (i.e. even taking that into account), reddit still agrees that language barriers are a problem.

So if the most pro-Valve community out there agrees that language barriers are an issue, hmm, maybe, just maybe, it's a problem. If you still disagree, I welcome you to show me a community that is less pro-Valve than reddit that DISAGREES that language barriers are problematic. (Hint: dev.dota2 isn't one such community.)

I don't think they ever referred to Phantom Lancer as Phantom Lancer. They seemed to call him "free." So yes, I am telling you that "ban specter" and "pick clock" were foreign words to the Captain. THE GUY DID NOT UNDERSTAND ENGLISH AT ALL.

So most of the counters to this have boiled down to implying you are racist or ignorant for agreeing with this idea. Which shows a profound misunderstanding of what racism is, or a severe case of ethnocentrism if you believe everyone should cater to your sensibilities without regard to their own.

Other arguments have boiled down to that there is no need because it's no big deal and NA players should just deal with it. Obviously I and many others disagree that all the potential words that need to be said cannot be contained in a few hotkeys, we're both only able to refer to anecdotal evidence, however I feel enough agree with my position to have our ideas merit consideration by Valve. Which brings me to my final point.

It will be optional. You might not like it, but I don't like All Random. So we can both queue for the options we like which is the point. If I want to sacrifice shorter queue times to have an increased chance at avoiding a language barrier and therefore more likely to have constructive communication, then that should be my choice. It is an indefensible position to deny someone an autonomous choice simply because you would not make that same choice.

Edit: Spelling on phone is rough sometimes

I actually do think that the language barrier creates RACISM in the first place. All this hate against russians on our servers is because of the sheer ignorance of many of them to speak english - if they can or not.

Some of the best players i played with were russians incapable of speaking a word english and still it sucks balls if you are not able to communicate with them by any means.

The problem is you can not really enforce it. There is a language setting and people still select english without being able to speak it. As Valve already has the problem that there are not really that many dota 2 players (come on its the 21st century, 400k concurrent players PEAK are nothing in an online game any more and the 3million accounts do not say that much) compared to a very specific other game which shares the player pool at least a bit they will never implement anything which just kicks out someone. The number of bans i have heard of so far is extremely low and even the number of people getting muted - even if they are REALLY racists/fascist/flaming or feeding on purpose seems to be quite low, so i guess Valve sticks more or less to keep everyone ingame, no matter how high the price for the nice and friendly or good and skilled players will ever be.

We got the exactly same problem with the match making. As they do not tell anyone how it really works, no one know if it works, beside valve who obviously THINKS it works, but many people disagree because i mean - let us be honest if i encounter after 1.000 games and a 50% winrate which is not good but at least somewhere in the middle people who never buy or pick ANY support, go crazy feeding on purpose from second 0 or pick 5 4 carries, try to steal gold of carries farming on the safelane away i really have to ask myself why the fuck get i matched with those. And i have not even talked about people who do not even KNOW the skills of the heroes in game...
