  • Has the mute system reduced RACISM? or increased it?

Okay...this is just a PERSONAL experience, I want to share it with you guys and see if you people have had similar experiences, I invite anyone to participate in the discussion, however this happens more often to NON native english speakers...but of course it can also happen to English speakers, when they play with multiple players of other background, or when they have a particular accent (Ausie accent and such)

    So this is my experience.

    Before the mute system.
As you can see in this post my English might not be perfect, but I write good enough to make myself clear in whatever I'm trying to say, so calling "Miss mid" or "Ganking bot" or "I'll blink in, focus drow" is usually no problem, however a lot of people are pretty bitchy and complain about everything, and when I start speaking in the microphone (Its faster than typing, and NO I dont keep it open all the time, and I only say game related stuff) a lot of people start going racist "Go eat some tacos and do my dishes fucking mexican" which I really didnt care, I kept them unmuted because I like receiving and giving important game information even if they are douches, I only ever muted them if they were doing it constantly

    After the mute system
You might think "Oh, he must love the mute system, now he can mute all those racists" But there's 2 main problems for me now with the mute system (When it comes to RACIST issues)
1° I dont have enough reports to deal with all the racists
2° I'm constantly reported and muted because of racist people, now they dont only abuse me in game, but also after the game

As I said, I'm not saying this is the case for EVERYONE who has been trough racism or who has seen or experienced it in an often basis, but still I'd like to hear your opinion:
has the Mute system reduced the racism you see? or the racism that you are victim of?
Or has it made you less likely to make racist comments in case you ever do it?

Or is it the other way around?
Have you been abused and muted by racist players?
    113
The racism has been reduced since the introduction of the mute system
    18.58%
    21
The racism has increased, and/or the racists use the mute system to further abuse other people
    37.17%
    42
I have seen little to no difference in my games (In either way)
    28.32%
    32
I havent experienced, seen, or been part of much racism in the game, so my opinion is neutral.

Make a NON automated report system.
I would rather wait 10 minutes for a balanced, fun and exciting match that will last 1+ hours. Than wait 10 seconds for a poorly balanced crapmatch that will end in 30- minutes
Valve, How I'm I supposed to respect certain boundaries to prevent a mute if I dont know them because they are different for each and every person on each and every game I play?
The only type of player that dislikes having his stats public are the players that suck and cheaters

Increased. Being of Chinese descent and born in the US, I am bilingual and capable of speaking both Mandarin and English. On occasion I speak to some of the Chinese players who somehow manage to meander onto the US servers (frankly I don't get why they do this, their ping must be awful).

I have actually had someone tell me they were going to report me and the other Chinese guy for queuing up on the US servers while speaking Chinese, conveniently ignoring the fact that I typed out an entire paragraph worth of English at the start of the game and then telling the people on the enemy team to report me too.

These racist jackholes are the kind of people Valve thinks are competent enough to police their own community. How anyone on the Dota 2 dev team didn't raise their hand and say that a self policing community on the internet was a completely stupid idea is beyond me.
You can avoid the mute system by playing on multiple accounts simultaneously. If you play on more than one account at a time, it will let your reports decay and the "algorithm" will disregard the reports made against you, which are likely baseless anyway. Do not play more than 2 games per day on any one account and the chances of you being muted will decrease drastically. Use as many accounts as is necessary, but do not exceed 2 games.
DONT ACCUMULATE GAMES ON ONE ACCOUNT, IT WILL GET MUTED.

      Mute system encourages racism.
I play pre-dominantly in the SEA server where its a mixture of cultures.
Being an Indian , i still hate Indians since most of them i ve met are racist assholes.
I ve seen a lot of racism towards pinoy or viets , it starts when the ally or enemy figure out what country they are from. Or they go to the extent of looking at your steam profile.
personally I ve been called black, from a third country , poor or illiterate or fat or beggar and so on.
I only feel sorry for these retards who abuse like this.

      Conclusion
Its ok if these retards abuse me like this cause nothing said by an unknown retard over the internet will affect me.
BUt whats not ok is the fact THE MUTE SYSTEM GIVES THEM THE POWER TO MUTE BAN ME because i'm from a nationality they dont like. This is something that really hurts me and my attitude towards dota

Who cares if it has. Has laws against drugs stopped drugs?

Stop bringing up irrational points. The mute system works.
        Pro MUTE System
        • If you complain about it, you're one of the people who have taken swift punishment from it. Proving it works.
        • If you keep arguing against it, you're a repeat offender, proving it works again.
        • ONLY REPEAT OFFENDERS continue to fight it.
        • Thank you Valve! Finally a system that shuts bad attitudes, big egos and ignorance down like a bad habit.

Do you disagree? Please let me know why HERE!

It's hard for me to answer this post because I myself am just "white guy American" -- I don't really have an accent because I'm mostly Irish, except I didn't get that suave irish sounding voice. I just got the unbelievably white skin. That being said, I've definitely played games with peoples with south american descents and I've been the American in a south african server and even been matched on the Russian servers. I always queue all regions, however.

I guess you could say I act 'racist' in games, but, I always ease into it in a joking manner and it seems to always strike a positive chord with people.

When I was playing with the south-american I would always crack jokes about me being American and "Him queuing on MY servers" mixed in with a healthy amount of useful game information. Before long, he was making jokes about mowing my lawn and in response I would say: "I don't intend to pay you, but I'll let you do my roof too if you want." We both fucking laughed our asses off and it was a really fun game.

I did the same thing when I was the American on the South African/Russian servers. People would ask: "American? American?" I'd be like: "Hell yeah, my two favorite things are DOTA and Nascar." We had a really good game, I never got shit for it and I ended up joking around more. One of them made a quip about how it was 22 degrees Celsius or something and I immediately typed: "I don't trust Celsius. I believe in Fahrenheit and Freedom." We all laughed and we proceeded to lose the game. No one got upset we lost we were just kinda like: "Shit, we had that game didn't we?" They were pretty hardcore about the game too, lemme tell ya.

Best advice I can give is to just laugh about it and try dominating the conversation with humor, an abstract suggestion I understand. I wish I could shed some light about if I really think the game is more or less racist with the new mute implementation -- I would hope less simply because it should be a mutable offense, right?

There's always going to be the two extremes:
          1) There is always going to be people who legitimately attack others verbally, or even physically, based solely upon the differences in sexuality, race, or religion.
          2) There is always going to be those who play their minority in their favor. The typical: "Race Card." Simply jumping onto the bandwagon of sympathy even though for them, it is unwarranted. I am not accusing anyone in this thread of representing this particular point.

          Hope this helps!

Irrelevant, not irrational and it's very relevant. C-, Proofread next time before submitting.

Yeah well, muted people are pretty much players that were able to communicate, and that valve decided to turn in to the russian/chinese of the team

Why should anyone be concerned with the childish fad of "racist" shaming? In 100 years it will seem as ridiculous as witch burning. Go complain about the mute system some more and stop looking for witches to burn.

Valve is the one looking for witches to burn. The system is MEANT to eliminate or reduce this behaviour along with others, so I'm curious to know if the system is actually working to reduce it, if it isn't, or if it is having the opposite effect, giving them more tools to abuse other players beyond just text/voice abuse

However, it has never looked at your historical win rate and put you in a game where it knew that you were expected to lose.

Obviously not the russians who refuse to communicate with other ppl.
