  • Terrorblade Lore Conspiracy

It's not really a conspiracy, but I didn't know what else to call it.

Ever since Terrorblade's introduction, his lore has pretty much left me in the cold. As far as demons go, DotA 2 has had some acceptably interesting ones so far with Doom, Shadow Fiend, Shadow Demon, and the impending release of Abyssal Underlord, but Terrorblade has an incredibly cliched backstory, like something a fourteen-year-old boy might write. "Oh he was the most badass demon ever and he was so cool and evil and bad that they sent him to HELL'S HELL but then he escaped because he's so badass!" Ugh.

Anyway, I looked into Terrorblade a little bit and found out that his voice actor, David Sobolov, is also the voice of the villain Malebolgia in the PS2 video game of SPAWN. As in, the epitome of overly badass and cool evil demon characters.

Could this have been intentional on Valve's part? Is Terrorblade meant to be a joke on that type of character? They've made an intentional reference with voice actor casting before, by having Tinker share a voice with Dr. Kleiner from Half-Life.

No shit Sherlock, why do you thing the flavor text on half of his skills are so "not dummy proof".Take the one on his conjure image, see what it references.

Okay don't call it a conspiracy if there isn't one. I am pleasantly surprised that you did not bring up yet again the abandoned brother relationship with AM, like so many others do. And I'll restate it: There is no conspiracy. Are Enigma and Bloodseeker somehow not badass to be ironic because Jon St. Jon (Duke Nukem) voiced them? No. Does Pudge reference sniping because he was voiced by John Patrick Lowrie (Sniper from TF2). Again, no. Stop reaching for straws and accept that Terrorblade has a weak lore.

And I don't even think it's that weak. Barebones, yes, but compare that to Naga Siren or Medusa and be glad it's not that. If you're really spoiled, open up anything to come from the WC3 version and shriek in fear. Really doubt that the comparison provided is fair.

I also wouldn't put it past Valve to have something like this be part of their motivation, but not the whole concept. He really needs either more cheesy lines or more oh-so-tortured flavor in the backstory for him to really, fully shout out to something. As it stands right now, he's just an asshole jerk daemon - which really isn't that bad of a thing. Not that it wouldn't be appreciated if his backstory had a paragraph or more of text, but still.

But, yeah, one last thing - I'm pretty sure that this is not what the word "conspiracy" really means.

While I don't think Terrorblade is referring to someone (and "conspiracy"? - oh pls), let me just point out that some heroes do have references to other franchises. Pudge doesn't refer to TF2 Sniper, but Dota 2 Sniper does. TA has a clear reference to Star Trek, Dirge refers to L4D and so on.

I know this, but he was suggesting that just because the voice actor voiced something else, the connection must be made to that something else. Which is why I mentioned that Pudge makes no reference to TF2 Sniper when they have the same voice actor.

It's what called the Universal Fallacy. Applying the same logic is illogical and false if one thing is different.

Yeah "conspiracy" was a bad choice of words, I will admit that, but I didn't know what other word to use.

Bloodseeker doesn't have any Duke Nukem references and Pudge doesn't have any sniping references because Jon St. John and John Patrick Lowrie voice multiple heroes in-game. Tinker, on the other hand, makes Half-Life references, and doesn't voice anybody else. It isn't an idea without precedent.

Too bad Magina is not mention in TB's lore.

Also, he is the baddest demon BECAUSE HE IS.
