  • Discussion: Pugna and Viper - Master and Pet?

It's a fairly simple conclusion to come to when I say that it seems Pugna was, at some point, Viper's owner.

Now, this is obviously a difficult thing to back up, other than their obvious links (such as location) and Pugna repeatedly calling Viper by the title of "pet".

However, given the nature of early Dota 2 lore, it may well be that this tidbit of lore has been practically retconned - similarly to the Anti-Mage/Terrorblade brotherhood, perhaps, though perhaps not.

    What I ask you is:

Assuming the lines said by Pugna to be true, what is the relationship between Pugna and Viper...
... and is Pugna the wizard mentioned in Viper's lore?

I haven't listened to Ayesee casting in a while, but he used to erroneously refer to Venomancer as Viper's ex-master as a "fun bit of trivia."

My assumption is that Pugna isn't the wizard. The old Grandmaster, however... And on how Pugna seems to remember it from first-hand experience, he may just have ingested the old guy's memories, that seems like a Pugna thing to do. Just to be a dick.
Heroes this user should seriously reconsider ever picking again.

          You mean, like a brat.
Since he's like 7, and piloting the old Grandmaster's skeleton inside the ribcage.

So yeah, I agree. Viper killed the old Grandmaster of Oblivion, causing his students to look for his reincarnation. I would go further and say that Viper's poison affected his metaphysical brain that's why he's such a brat right now.

And just where are you getting that theory from?

Reddit and this forum (Pugna's entry in the Undead section).

Its a very cool theory though. Gives him more character.

Pugna's lore is kind of... shallow. Well, it on its own it's quite deep, but I don't really feel like it explains Pugna—just an event from his childhood, and then the outcome of the temple. Most lores (not all) describe how the hero came to be the hero that's in the game... it's like if Lich's lore just went on about Ethreain being an ice mage, and then making his threat of enslavement, ending the lore there, and all of a sudden Lich is what you get.

It's fine leaving stuff to the imagination, and surely the lore doesn't have to spoon-feed readers every detail, but I really feel like there's a whole chapter of Pugna's life (and death? reanimation? what?) missing. Which is why I also like the idea of Pugna being a child piloting a skeleton.

Considering that Pugna was definitely not a human, why can't the theory that he IS a child skeleton be the go-to? Piloting a skeleton sounds silly as shit, and we know nothing about his race to not think it might just be a child skeleton.

Mainly because last time we heard of him, he was a kid, burning down lamasteries. Right now he's a mostly broken green skeleton that moves awkwardly. One can't help but feel like something is missing.

That does not dismiss the possiblity that he's a kid skeleton, I imagine a being that is only composed of bone wouldn't move very normally. Not to mention that once again we know nothing of his kind; That could just be how they walk.
