  • Mana and it's place on the cosmology & lore

My apologies if this question was asked before.

What exactly is mana and what are its origins?

Mana is very important in the game. It not only fuels magic (Invoker wouldn't be able to execute a single spell without mana), but also allows one to do exteordinary feats of strength (think on Sven using his ultimate). In essence, it allows you to do things one cannot naturally do.

It should also be pointed out that, while most units in the game possess mana (the heroes and even some neutral creeps), there are others that doesn't (melee creeps and other neutral creeps like Mud Golems). The game also correlates mana with intelligence and clarity of mind (characters with more intelligence have more mana points).

The Dota 2 cosmology teaches us that the Ancients provide many things to life around them. "The Ancients, both Radiant and Dire, provided many benefits: kinetic energy, mana, protection, even resurrection," says the cosmology. But providing mana and originating mana are two very different things. If we think on what kind of energy Elder Titan used to break the Mad Moon (what a klutz), it's very likely that he possessed mana.

So, what's exactly mana is, what are it's origin and role on the cosmology?

If it has, it's been over a year and a half ago.

It looks like Mana is kinda of like a mix of ether and midichlorians from Star Wars. It's in virtually anything, and can be brought to use through specific manipulations. It seems to even power machinery, and it not considered magic, because even AM and Tinker admit that they are using it. It's likely that every creature has potential, but only some end up developing something out of it. Most just seem to have it lie dormant and decay so it can't even be effectively burned.

I would danger a guess that it has been around long before the Ancients and the Mad Moon, maybe even the Primordials. Could well just be the substance that keeps the world running.
Heroes this user should seriously reconsider ever picking again.

Indeed Mana and Magic aren't the same. Sven is not a mage and he uses Mana.

But here's the thing: if Mana is the substance that keeps the world running, what can be said about creatures in the game that doesn't have any mana at all?

Well, I explained that - it's innate, yes, but some don't realize any of the potential and it just lies dormant. It's there, yes, but it is never actively used, so there is pretty much not even a single point of it. Just scraps. These who have mana are mostly just the ones who have some sort of control over it.

I guess you can just treat mana like some kind of energy source, form which all living creatures can tap. Mana isn't required to live, but it allows different creatures to use certain abilities. For example, I think that Tinker uses mana as an energy source for his technology, mostly because it's the most convient source of energy. Since some creatures, like Mud Golems, only have basic attacks, they don't need mana.
