  • Luna (Valve Lore)

How had she been reduced to this? She was once the Scourge of the Plains, a merciless leader of men and beasts, and able to sow terror wherever she dared. Now she was far from her homeland, driven half mad from starvation and months of wandering, her army long dead or turned to worse. As she stood at the edge of an ancient forest, a pair of glowing eyes spied on from an elder branch. Something beautiful and deadly sought a meal in the wilting dusk. Without a sound, it turned and left. Fury overtook her. Clutching a rust-eaten dagger, she charged after the beast determined to reclaim even a shred of her past glory, but her quarry would not be caught. Three times she cornered the creature among the rocks and trees, and three times she pounced only to witness its fading shadow darting further into the woods. Yet the full moon shone brightly, and the creature’s trail was easy to follow. Arriving in a clearing atop a high hill, the beast’s massive feline form sat in the open, attentive and waiting. When the woman brandished her dagger, the creature reared and roared and charged. Death, it seemed, had come for her at long last in this strange place. She stood, calm and ready. A flash of movement, and the beast snatched the dagger from her hand before vanishing into the forest. Stillness. Hooded figures approached. In reverent tones they revealed that Selemene, Goddess of the Moon, had chosen her, had guided her, had tested her. Unwittingly she had endured the sacred rites of the Dark Moon, warriors of the Nightsilver Woods.
She was offered a choice: join the Dark Moon and pledge herself to the service of Selemene, or leave and never return. She did not hesitate. Embracing her absolution, she renounced her bloody past, and took up a new mantle as Luna of the Dark Moon, the dreaded Moon Rider, ruthless and ever-loyal guardian of the Nightsilver Woods.

Hm. I think we pretty much guessed Luna's lore from her responses - former bandit/warlord, devotee of Selemene, patrols the Nightsilver Woods, member of a warrior group called the Dark Moon...

    Everything is as expected imo.

i think the lore is great, but i was hoping there would be more luna vs mirana fare. actually, i was hoping that luna would have some kind of distrust against mirana for turning away from the solar throne, but with her current lore it would just make her seem bitter and hypocritical

good job nonetheless. i guess i was just hoping for more rivalries within the lore altogether.

You know, when a game delivers lore through gameplay it is considered a good thing. VALVe is good at that, just look at L4D.

A lore involving cat fights. What's there not to like?

Dang, I was hoping for a Mirana reference in the lore itself. But, welp, that should be enough. Not a huge fan, but I've got nothing against it - I am not a Luna fan, to be honest, and whatever Valve came up with for her would have hardly amused me.
Heroes this user should seriously reconsider ever picking again.

I immediately thought of the Mad Moon when I read Dark Moon.
There's no saying if Luna and Mirana are directly connected apart from serving the same goddess. She does appear loyal to her (unless we're talking rival lines), but considering the whole Dark Moon thing they appear to belong to different aspects of their belief. And Mirana did chose to follow Selemene herself, and somehow kept her status as princess. Puzzling.

Luna belongs to a warrior sect dedicated to protecting the sacred land of Selemene. Mirana is called the "Princess of the Moon", so I think we can guess that their goddess holds her in high regard to let her have such a title. So it's not that they follow different aspects of Selemene, it's just that they have different roles. Maybe Mirana serves as a priestess or something. Who knows. But she's probably the only "Princess of the Moon".

Wait a sec, I think we didn't actually ask the main question this lore poses.

What really happened to her army? What did she cause prior to that? Why did she, of all of them, survive to wander for months in remote lands?

                      And what caused her downfall?

I don't really find that as relevant. Her old army is completely unamed as well as her homeland. The only info we have of it is that it was mostly Plains. So either she got invaded, or she was a sort of Invader who got retribution back for her acts. She doesn't show any particular resentment towards any hero or any sign of even caring about all of that anymore at this point.

Basically, it's stuff long past. She lived past beyond all of it because it's not important anymore. And since we're introduced to Luna as a protector of Selemene, that's how much of an importance all of her responses and lore will give us about it.

Besides, it's another bleeping army falling in another bleeping location, both of which very likely disconnected to everything else so far. How could anyone feel we're missing on something important at this point fails to hit me in the tinker.

Well, it seems that our cathegories of interest differ highly. I really am interested in what happened to the army, as it is implied that they had fallen upon a fate worse than death, but Luna herself couldn't know for sure, apparently having been separated from them to begin with.

I guess that there is only soap that some of it will be revealed in the hypothetical upcoming media.

I think we can say that, since Luna 'renounced' her past, we're not really supposed to find out much else about it. What's really important is her 'current' life now.

I mean, if Luna's story was presented in some other kind of format, I'd say that it'd be interesting to find out about her past. But right now, the characters are supposed to be "static" and any sort of character development would be.....well, depending on how Valve decides to do their 'comics' on Dota 2, it'd fit in there better as some sort of flashback.
