The monks of Turstarkuri watched the rugged valleys below their mountain monastery as wave after wave of invaders swept through the lower kingdoms. Ascetic and pragmatic, in their remote monastic eyrie they remained aloof from mundane strife, wrapped in meditation that knew no gods or elements of magic. Then came the Legion of the Dead God, crusaders with a sinister mandate to replace all local worship with their Unliving Lord's poisonous nihilosophy. From the landscape that had known nothing but blood and battle for a thousand years, they tore the souls and bones of countless fallen legions and pitched them against Turstarkuri. The monastery stood scarcely a fortnight against the assault, and the few monks who bothered to stir from their meditations believed the invaders were but demonic visions sent to distract them from meditation. They died where they sat on their silken cushions. Only one youth survived--a pilgrim who had come as an acolyte, seeking wisdom, but had yet to be admitted to the monastery. He watched in horror as the monks to whom he had served tea and nettles were first slaughtered, then raised to join the ranks of the Dead God's priesthood. With nothing but a few of Turstarkuri's prized dogmatic scrolls, he crept away to the comparative safety of other lands, swearing to obliterate not only the Dead God's magic users--but to put an end to magic altogether.

It seems a little unclear if their meditation actively repels these things or is just disinterested in them.

I'm a little confused by this part, if none of the monks even resisted, how did they last two weeks against the assault?

With nothing but a few of Turstarkuri's prized dogmatic scrolls
Does he later use these scrolls to develop his skills? A little more elaboration on what happens here might be nice.

Best origin story I have read so far. Lots of lore about the world and having AM being an acolyte before he fled is great. And the horrors he saw explain his disposition towards magic.
@Otter I think their meditation was just disinterested in any kind of theism.
I guess it took the demons some time to find them up on their mountain.
AM was still an acolyte so I guess he completed the lessons on his own.
At least that's what I gather from this.

The monks role as an Anti-magic society, could use a lot more strenghtening, as well as these scrolls that AM may or may not have used to learn his skills, as owen already has mentioned. Just a little more clarifaction please!

If i'm not completely mistaken Magina (Anti-Mage) and Terrorblade (Soul Keeper) are brothers, or? This connection is completely missing in this story. Also i agree with otter and quicksilva, there needs to be a bit more clarification!
But i like the idea of him being in a monastery before.
(Sorry if i "revive" this topic.. But it seemed to me to be forgotten)

They are still brothers, yes. Anti-Mage refers to Terror Blade as his brother in his voice lines.

I recently began translating some abilities and the lore of AM for STS, but I encountered a problem. In his backstory it is said he encountered the forces of the Dead God. Now, the lore from his Blink tooltip speaks of his encounter with the Dead Gods. I was wondering if that's only a typo.

AM has another line on that subject when he kills someone, "To thy Dead God go.", which seems to confirm that it's supposed to be singular. It should end up as Dead God on the blink tooltip, after the typo is fixed.

For AM's lore, his character in game really conveys that he despises magic, and everything about it. However, his lore kinda weakly conveys it. So much is set up on the monks and the monastery, then a massive army coming and laying waste to it. The "oh they do some necromancy too btw" is really tacked on for how much atrocities like that drive Anti-mage's character. "Crusaders" and "Legion" heavily implies just an evil army of pure force and destruction. How they twist and abuse magic should be a core part of the legion's force if it's to give to motivation that is expressed in game.

Although I enjoy the lore, it doesn't really promote AM's hatred of magic and its users. When I was playing and listening to him I got a strong vibe of him having a vendetta against all users of magic, but the lore really only shows a reason to despise the Dead God. Unless it is a case of misplaced hatred, it seems a little odd.
