    Welcome to the Lore Forum!

We're going to kick off the forum by posting the current batch of Hero lore that we've been working with, both to give insight into the process and to get community feedback. There will be one thread per hero just to get things rolling.

Going forward, as more general Dota 2 world lore is revealed both in the game and outside of it, this forum should serve as a place where people can respond to what we're doing and let us know what sort of things they would like to see us develop further.

We need some overall general lore for this world. Are you working on that? I was never into Dota lore, because it was stumps and pieces from many different places put together in a more or less random mix. Dota2 is a chance to actually make some interesting lore, but that would require some overall lore and not just one for each hero.

    Questions i'd like answered:
    - What world is this?
    - Why do they gather on this battlefield?
    - What are the Ancients?
    - Who is Roshan?
    - Who are the Dire and the Radiant?

      - What are the Nemesis Stones?
      - Is there a map for the world of Dota?
      - Is the lore still flexible enough for adjustments/changes?
      - Is there a list of all existing rivalries?
      - Can we come up with new rivalries?

Does Arrant sound better than Radiant?

I prefer The Guardians over Radiant or Arrant, since the Sentinel is trademarked.

I'd think something along the lines of:
It's Aghanim who lost his mind after using his most powerfull magic to lock one of the most Powerfull Demons of the Dire up in a Cave near the River Styx. Due to his curious nature he went to travel the 7 realms and came across these precious artifacts. And now makes a living of them.

After reading all the hero-lore....I think we need some basic info about the world to really judge them.
There is no incentive for any of the heroes to join that battle and even though each on of them has their own reasons to fight or have the ability to fight, it does not explain why they chose a faction or what they are fighting for in the battle of the game.
Non of the stories are bad and most are even great! But the big picture that would tie the whole thing together is missing. I think bQtter and Chairraider summed up what we need to give proper feedback :P

Guys, my girlfriend and me are making something special these days. I will release it when all of the heroes stories are included so I will know all the places. It is some sort of map of DotA world with all the places included. So give me some time, and Ill make it happen.

Regarding that there are many ideas for stories alrdy posted and considered to be good I would like to have like a map or something which shows all the parts of the world which appear so far. Doesnt need to be a map but for me who just looked into the lore for the first time its almost impossible to read through all the threads and make some suggestion which I can connect meaningful.

Personally I'm hoping for a lot of faction switching from the ongoing lore. The gameplay already reflects constant side switching since picking heroes isn't restricted to factions.

Anti-mage might decide it's time to go after Radiant side magic users. Warlock might decide he can't let Dire destroy a monastery that contains ancient knowledge. Axe might just need a new enemy to fight. etc.

You could even switch their side in-game as a nod to the lore. Would make events more noticeable and memorable and it's not like it affects gameplay.

But it would be annoying to find the heroes unless they had some slight rework...? Accesability etc.

Had a chance to read your hero background stories today and some of the comments about them. Some are genuinely really great, although for the weaker ones, the more senior core testers are being extremely respectful since...well you know. They have had really great ideas in the past on this sort of thing, but I almost feel that they seem to be holding those great ideas back and providing generic feedback on a lower level than what I have seen before on this matter. The main two areas of criticism seems to be pertaining to two small things:

                              1. The continuity, community involvement, and keeping the flavour of the distinct writing style of DotA 1 lore and descriptions.
                              2. There's a lot of disjointedness and lack of common ground: The lore and stories that will permeate the Valve DotA universe is coming via reverse-engineering of the hero stories as opposed to the other way around.

I understand much of the focus right now is on gameplay itself, bug fixing, UI, getting the game up to speed, but there are a lot of people very interested and excited about the story and backgrounds - I'm a big fan myself. PlayDotA has long had numerous users contributing stories and tidbits, and testers and writers themselves have helped out for hero abilities, stories and even mechanics, so clearly the interest and desire to help, is there. You have a wealthy number of strong writers even now among those who have commented in your threads to help you make the best of what you can do, use them like cooking utensils and keep the sharpest ones (WORK THEM LIKE DOGS THEY WILL COMPLY ). Let them improve some sentences, suggest some of their own thoughts and ideas. Then with the best tools, you can easily improve on what I see is an already very strong foundation.

                              Keep up the awesome work.

                              Justin
