  • Riki

Riki was born middle child to the great dynasty of Tahlin. With an older brother groomed for the throne, and a younger brother coddled and kept, Riki, the small middle son, seemed born for the art of invisibility. It was an art he cultivated, and one which ultimately saved his life on the night that his people were betrayed and his family slaughtered. Of all the royal line, he alone escaped—small and agile, unassuming, using smoke as cover. He cut his way out of the royal grounds, using the advantage of surprise, quietly slitting the throats of one enemy warrior after another. Now free of his royal responsibilities, Riki uses his talents in service to a new trade: stealth assassin. He silences his enemies, sharpening his skills, hoping to one day take revenge on those who killed his family and robbed him of his birthright.

I think it needs some context of why he's a satyr -- maybe the Tahlin are just a race of satyrs, but a brief mention of that would help. When I hear "great dynasty" I kinda default to thinking about humans.

Kinda agree with Otter, I also feel like there is a bit of a lack of describing how he gained his abilities. Royal sons frequently were trained in various fighting styles and it looks like Riki had way too much time. Just a line saying he was trained in the art of assassination would be enough imo.

art of war would suffice.... he was agile and stealth by nature.

But a notion of the satyr is a good idea indeed... it looks dynasty looks a tad more human "educated" while i always found satyrs to be less educated that elves and humans. Or just name his father by the name Pan and people will find the story themselves.

I agree with Alienufo. Why would you have to explain why he is a Satyr? Every race can have royalty. Explaining the monarchy of the Satyrs does not have to be in the hero-description. And I think saying that he was the middle child who embraced getting little attention instead of craving more is a nice touch and is enough to explain his affection to the stealthy way of combat.

Exactly this! I don't feel there is any need to explain about his race or its origins. Actually the first thing coming to my mind when I read "Great Dynasty" was a whole council full of satyrs.
If you are concerned about new players who aren't acquainted with the hero, the story only appears when you click the hero on the pick screen. So when they read the story they'll most likely relate everything with the 3D animated model they see above in a box.

Satyrs are described as roguish but faint-hearted folk — subversive and dangerous, yet shy and cowardly.
imo Riki isnt the type for royalty...he should be natures child lurking thru mist and trees always few steps ahead of the target.

That is nothing you can make a proper story of. Besides, it sounds too much like Drow's story. Having him be royalty in spite of his personality is great. You are right about one thing: he was not born to be royalty, he was born to be the stealthy killer he always wanted to be, secretly. That is a great and dark twist on his personality. A sociopath born into a royal family and now he has a reason to kill, revenge. Or is it really self-fullfillment? :O
Also, do not get the definition of races from other fantasy-lore into this. We can have our own Satyrs.

Somehow it seems that the effects of his spells are forced into the storyline ("using smoke as cover", "He silences his enemies"). Otherwise it's a quite nice background.

They cant own such a name... it's not even their property to begin with if you see it that way, this name has been used in the past and "can" be used as a real name
