  • Tidehunter

Tidehunter was once the champion of the Sunken Isles, but his motives are as mysterious as those of his people. We all know the importance of the Drylanders' shipping lanes, how empires may rise and fall according to who controls the open water. Far less is known of the submarine lanes, and how the warring tribes of the Meranthic Disapora have carved out habitations through endless undersea skirmishes. In the fragile treaties between the Mer and Men, we can glimpse the extent of the drowned empires, but their politics appear complex and opaque. It would seem that Tidehunter tired of such petty strife, and set off on his own, loyal only to his abyssal god, Maelrawn the Tentacular. He stalks the shallows now in search of men or meranths who stray into his path, and with a particular loathing for Admiral Kunkka, who has long been his nemesis.

This starts out pretty cool, has lots of names/places that could develop into important things and it piques my curiosity. Then in the middle of it I feel like Tide's disinterest just kinda kills the whole thing:

It would seem that Tidehunter tired of such petty strife, and set off on his own
For me a line like this kinda eclipses the rest of the lore -- if Tide doesn't care about any of it, the why should I? If he's going to give up his role there and venture of on his own, that's fair, but without a more specific incident it doesn't seem to carry much value as an event. Perhaps Kunkka screwed him somehow, thus creating the rivalry?

P.S. "tentacular" is an amazing word.

I agree with Otter. It feels like there is a lack of reason for Tidehunter to leave the depths. And "why" is Kunkka his nemesis? Kunkka's sword, the legendary "Tidebringer", is way too good to pass up in this context. Maybe "Tidebringer" was Tidehunter's weapon before Kunkka took it from him? Maybe the sword is always given to the reigning champion of all tribes of the Sunken Isles? Maybe Tidebringer is the treasure Slardar was supposed to guard (he was a treasure guard according to Lore)?

Taking away this sign of power, the shame of losing it to a Drylander is a strong reason to leave the depths for Tidehunter (and possibly Slardar) to me.

I agree with Chairraider and his idea is pretty good.
I like this version of Tidehunter by the way but Otter is right about Tide's indifference. Also, I guess the mutilated fish he carries around is one of his former opponents? Does the ancor bear any meaning in this version?

LoL I really like how the story develops in here! Lets see...

Tidehunter lost his famous sword which could lift the Tides on his command. Sunken Isles Pirates constantly ravaged and plundered his homeland, where his sword came into the hands of most famous pirate "Kunkka". etc etc* While he tried to recover it from his ship, he pulled out the anchor trying to captivate the vessel. The chain broke, Kunkka`s ship fled into the mist of the sea leaving the anchor in hands of mighty Tidehunter, filled with rage.

I think this is a bad way of stating things, if we all know it why does it have to be said?

Also, theres a lot of "we" in this story, and its unclear who "we" is

Nah, it would sound better as it's the sword of the sea, he stole it from the sea, which guardian was tidehunter
