    Magnus arrived on the scene, and with him another of those facepalm worthy ability names.

    Apparently Magnus is now an electromancer or somehow uses magnetism to pull enemies in. And you thought he was just a big warrior with a horn and a polearm like his model, lore and other abilities indicate.

    Unfortunately Magnus is not alone. We already have such brilliant ability names as:
    • Firefly (no relation whatsoever to the insect)
    • Amplify Damage (technically the name is incorrect, but the Diablo 2 reference is clearly more important)
    • Decrepify (did you know being old makes you immune to physical damage?)
    • LVL? Death (screw immersion, let's make a Final Fantasy reference)
    • Sprint (he's... a... fish)
    • Demonic Conversion (Enigma is absolutely not a demon)
    • Shukuchi (unfitting gratuitous Japanese, probably a reference to something or other)



    But it is par for the course because heroes themselves have names like:
    • Lucifer, Zeus (hello real world)
    • Disruptor ("Disruptor, the Stormcrafter". Really?!)
    • Clinkz (the tormented dead are known adherents of leetspeek)
    • Razor (fear his blades! Oh wait, lightning)
    • Shadow Fiend & Shadow Demon (yo dawg...)
    • Nyx Assassin & Templar Assassin & Phantom Assassin



    Riot, for all their anti-fun and design patterns, has a point when they aim to create champions that make sense.

    Dota champions originated as niches in the metagame which were filled by a set of abilities, then a model picked from the limited number of models in Warcraft 3, and hero/ability names often chosen by the community (who care less about immersion than even a mod developer). This is okay for a duct taped mod, not so much for a commercial game.

    Valve is one of the few studios that cares about polish, cohesion and immersion. I wonder why these names were not changed and I believe Valve is afraid to touch anything about Dota for fear of breaking it. With no prior experience in AOS games and a Dota fanbase that complains about every little change, Valve seems to have no confidence in their ability to improve on the game in any way without Icefrog permission, even when it comes to something as simple as hero names, while the Valve lore team presumably eat their keyboard in frustration.

    Riot is good at selling champions as "characters" with their own personality. Everyone knows Teemo. It is hard to get attached to some of the completely random champions in Dota, which leads to a common complaint about Dota 2 among the LoL community: it is a game with no personality or soul, just a set of cold numbers. This may reduce its appeal.

    And it is so easy to fix!

    Go argue with those who are for it.
    Basically, it boils down to personal feelings of tradition and their value.

      I agree on every single point you make, appart from that one part where you start comparing Dota 2 to LoL and somehow it appears that the latter has no soul. I'm just leaving you a small warning - you'd better be a fan of flaming feces, because a storm is coming.

      A good chunk of names make zero sense lore-wise; an even bigger chunk at least got explained, somehow. And there is hope or them to change; not all at once, of course, but every so slowly, they may make their way through the patch notes unnoticed. People did, in the end, get used to calling Furion Nature's Prophet and Thrall Disruptor (well, most of them) - and it's been months since I've last seen someone drop the name of "Buriza" instead of the new "Daedalus". So why not go through hero skills, too? No real reason not to; and even less reason to not be careful while doing so.
      Heroes this user should seriously reconsider ever picking again.

        I quite agree with the OP, however, I'm more interested in bug fixes rather than cosmetics

        [slight off topic tho a bit on topic rant:]
        I keep seeing the proudly line on some updates "Added 99999999999999 items to the dota store" yet there are so many critical bugs that await fixing ... There are a handful of immersion suggestions (one or two by me and about a gazillion by the rest) and they might improve the game, just like your thread, but honestly, +1 to bugfixing for now and postpone anything related to visuals. It's all great, really ... but I just want to click the damn menu button or to click the play button after a hero pick without having a dota crash. Nothing more. I don't even care about the performance bars or no mana bars on enemies or russian servers or other frustration topics about how valve made all the wrong decisions and they are pieces of *insert random-dota-community-trash-talk-that-gets-them-banned here* opened by ungrateful frustrated and depressed players. Dota 2 is great (although not perfect YET). All I want is to play without crashes and without hero bugs that affect abilities and thus gameplay.

          Summary: OP wants new Names for Skills and Heros because they dont fit?
          Well let me argue that way: Is "Sven" a proper Name for a "Hero". I dont think so. But it was not my task to give him a Name. What if we call him "Heinz"? Why not ? You want it to sound Epic or that it fits. That will never happen. Because there will be guys like you who think that it still dont fit.
          BUT you are right. I mean "LVL? Death"... that IS the worst name.
          Also Nyx & N'aix.... come on.

            Not gonna change. Sorry.
            You lost all your argument when you referenced LoL. And if it is a change that you want, suggest it on playdota.com, I'm sure they will look gently to this changes there.

              When an hero has negative armor, damage is indeed amplified, so in the majority of the cases, the name is fitting.

              What does this have to do with age? Decrepify is a reference to Diablo, it's not even a real word.

              Because bug fixing and adding cosmetic items are done by different people. Not to mention that the issues you are experiencing may be more than 'just alter this line of code', meaning that it may take a while for it to be fixed. Having 40 people on the same issue seriously isn't going to be more productive than say 20, because at some point, people are going to be doing redundant work because others are already doing it.
              Also, your rant is not on topic at all. This is lore, not cosmetics.

                Ok OP im playing this game for 9 years it would be very fun to change all the names of heroes and skills hell lets change the game name so it suits to your "taste"...

                      Sure, bugfixing and content are more important, but also done by different teams. All I'm saying is the studio that created GLADoS should not be forced to put in "LVL?Death" just because Icefrog the expert in game mechanics but not necessarily in crafting a believable world called it LVL?Death.

                      You can see the lore writers trying desperately to salvage some of the weirder stuff. When Doombringer casts LVL?Death and gets the bonus damage, he says "A demon's luck with numbers". He got this close to calling it Number Of The Beast. Nice try, but it's not enough.

                      Why is OD's ult called Sanity's Eclipse and not Mana Blast? Because Sanity's Eclipse is a much cooler name and fits the hero concept to a T.

                      Ahh yes, Playdota.com, the place where changes go to die. There is no such thing as immersion or production quality in Dota1 because it's a map based on Warcraft 3 and a lot of duct tape, so a Dota1 player does not give two hoots. Unfortunately, there are more people in the world than just Dota1 players and Valve is going to try and sell the game to those other people as well.

                      Both games have a wind-up caster. Completely regardless of their abilities, Orianna beats Clockwork in terms of presentation: instead of a "rat in a power suit" she is the daughter of a clockmaker who rebuilt her as an automaton after she died. She looks appropriately Victorian and has voice lines like "So strange, they scream" and "Why do they keep breaking?".

                      Valve is more than capable of stuff like this: they took a puzzle game concept with portal guns and created a whole living world around it. The question is, why aren't they allowed to do it again? Why can't Slardar slide along on his belly instead of "sprinting" with fish fins, and make the target's armor rust with a splash of salty water instead of amplifying (physical) (non-DoT) damage (depending on enemy armor)? Why can't Doombringer invoke demonic numerology? Why can't the hellfire skeleton be called something else than Clinkz? Why can't the big strong rhinocentaur stomp the ground to cause a collapse that makes enemies fall towards him, instead of using his deus ex machina magnetic powers?

                          Well that's just your opinion. I find League champions to be extremely lacking in personality. How does Teemo have personality and how is he memorable? He's a generic chibi fluffy thing you can see everywhere in Japan. All females are slutty as hell, huge boobs, same voices, same faces. Most VA is terrible and poorly delivered and most lines are uninspired crap that reeks of shonen manga and cheap cartoon villains "They will fear me! Rawr I'm so evil!", "My power is limitless!". The jokes and taunts aren't even trying to be funny anymore, do people even use them at all?

                          So here's my take on League of Legends' character design.
                          As you can see, it's subjective. If you think DOTA characters aren't memorable or lacking compared to Riot design, then you probably won't like anything that's not inspired from cheap anime and you won't be satisfied with DOTA anytime soon.

                          Also League doesn't even have animated portraits... fucking Warcraft 3 DOTA had them, and you're criticizing immersion from a League perspective? And how are you assuming that Clinkz's name is l33tspeak? Just because of the z at the end? Really?

                          You're either trying to flamebait with LoL comparisons or you're just very biased, and you're looking at a several years old game from the skewed perspective of anime culture / Riot's targeted character design.

                            Those names were replaced for copyright reasons. No one died.

                            That name was replaced because the original was fking stupid.

                            So yes, Valve can do it, and they will do it if their facepalm is big enough. So why not extend this to some of the other dumb names?

                              Okay, the OP does have a decent point - Orianna actually is arguably the most only interesting and truly unique League champion. I'll give her that. I find myself having to aggree with the OP on what he's suggesting; some of the names need to go, reference or not. I'm fine with Decrepify, but LVL? Death and Shukuchi are just, I mean, why. There I stand corrected; what has begun should not be stopped, the progress must not halt at hero names and items.

                              But really, you dug yourself a luxurious two-storey grave with a fashionable tombstone just by hinting at how LoL is, in your opinion, somewhat superior to Dota 2. You don't do that. You just don't do that in here.
