Its more interesting when the heroes are apart of the same world unlike Dota. Wisp, Spirit Breaker, Earth Shaker, etc. are elementals. Morphling came from space. Juggernaut is the last of his kind.

What they could have done was made Nyx Assassin and Nyx Weaver. The Nyx could be a race of insects and somehow made them related it. Instead we have Weaver as a god of time. The world just seems too vast with characters coming from different realms. Why are they even fighting in the first place? Why is wisp in this war and why is he aligned with the Radiant?
Because CK, Wisp, Enigma, and KotL are totally not related. CM and Lina aren't either, and neither is Lycan and Beastmaster, Tide and Kunkka, Chen and Silencer, etc.

    Oh wai-

Okay, I have another theory that actually came to me in the shower after one of the worst and longest football matches of my life.
When we play the game and destroy the Ancient building, we don't destroy the Ancient. In killing a strategically important building we win a battle, but not the war. Both, the Dire and the Radiant Ancients have the power to resurrect heroes (that's fairly obvious) and in every new battle they resurrect different ones and try out other combinations to win each battle. Always using the same line-up will obviously result in losing battle after battle, even when winning a couple at first. Yes, I'm saying all heroes are dead. They all died in the very first battle the Radiant and Dire fought out in this world, all the heroes that we categorize as belonging to the Radiant side fought for the Radiant, all the Dire heroes for the Dire. None of the heroes, not a single one, is mighty enough to actually put an end to an Ancient, even with the power of the other Ancient backing him up.
They got tricked and deceived into this war by the Ancients and are now just the puppets on which strings the Ancients can pull if they want to. All the great history the heroes have is long gone past.

^This or the multiple dimension thing makes sense...I guess.

Imo, the whole thing would work much better if the war was spanning across the entire world with much greater proportions than the current 'three lanes and a river' setting, while the map we get to play remained the glorified what-if scenario in which we pitch heroes against each other in direct combat.

1337_n00b once said that each game of dota could be a simulation in the mind of one of the ancients, in which they try to devise better tactics for the 'real war', and I think that that is a pretty good solution for the whole 'ck and kotl fighting on the same side' problem.

Then the question remains: When will the battle really be fought? Stay tuned to find out!

Well that's the point really, the real lore can be delivered to us via comics, videos and other means (in-game events maybe) and can be placed in any time and place, while the game we keep playing remains an unseen simulation, independent of any progress in lore.

i like better the idea that ancient just summon heroes from diferent times, worlds and spaces just to beat each other. some of them might come from similar times and regions... thats all.. theres no need to explain the replays and the different matches dont need a conection.. you should really win the fight if u beat the enemy its just game over and u start again...
its not like u got to explain it all!

The way I've been seeing it, Its a bit closer to Law/Order and Chaos/Disorder for Radi and Dire. Instead of Dota 1's Sentinel, the embodiment of life and tranquility, and Scourge, the harbinger of the end and decay.
Lets go through the controversial ones.

                  Radiant

                  Riki
                  Antimage
                  Centaur
                  Warlord
                  Morphling

What do all of them have in common? Riki and Antimage should give it away. Revenge, maybe, but simpler. Devotion. They all have a cause for what they do, and an aim. RIki wants the vengeance of his family, Antimage wants it for the monks. Centaur wants to PROVE he's the best at his artwork, Warlord wants to give back as much pain as he was given, Morphling wishes to understand this strange place more and more, albeit killing anybody in the process. Taking this into account, Storm spirit may seem dire, except he was formed of a purpose, a purpose for rain to come to a barren land. Ursa too. Smart bear goes out to kill any threat before it becomes a threat to his people. Seem like a nice thing to do? No, but he's got his purpose down directly.

                  Now, Alternatively.

                  Dire
                  Lycanthrope
                  Outworld Destroyer

Lycanthrope everybody thought he wanted the vengeance of his family. Ok, so where is it that he wants it? He's become more feral than human, I doubt he even cares now. He knows it happened, but he doesn't remark on the "in search of justice for all that he lost." too much from his lore, at least not in a way that he truly cares for it.
Outworld Destroyer, He has a purpose, except...what is it? See that's why even though he has a purpose, he has dire's embodiment entirely, Aimlessness, disorder, and chaos. Lycan has somewhat of these too, he doesn't go by his purpose as avidly as antimage or riki, so he is more dire than radiant.

TL;DR: Radiant is Aim, Purpose, Law, Dire is aimlessness, chaos, and wanton rampage. Opposites, yes, Good/evil? Subjective.
