  • (Discussion) What do you want to see accomplished from the lore?

Lets discuss what we want to see accomplished from the lore of DOTA 2. Is explaining the hero origins and team origins enough? Should there be a more comprehensive story behind the game?

    Here are my thoughts:

It seems DOTA 2 is taking the Mortal Kombat approach to story. That is, fairly vague origin stories for each character, and not much else really matters. Personally, I think we could do a lot better. I would like to see an actual coherent world come together. Right now all we have to go off of is hero origins, and to me this actually does little to create the coherent world that I want. To be honest they make for a completely disjointed world in my mind. None of the places, factions, or people mentioned in these stories have any significance in my mind because there's really no frame of reference for me to assign importance to them. I read about stuff like the Army of Red Mist in Axe's origin and just find myself wanting to know more about them and how important they are in the world of DOTA, and if any other characters have any ties to them, etc.

I realize it can be hard to tell a story without a campaign mode of any kind, and I'm not asking for some epic story akin to the warcraft universe or star wars, but right now I just feel like the entire effort lore wise is far too disjointed for me to really make sense of it.

That's it pretty much already. 1 world, 1 map (geographically correct with all locations, islands, deserts, mountains, fields, cities, kingdoms, forests, etc.), all names and heroes woven into 1 lore with 1 large, ultimate, decisive battle which brings together all the heroes in 2 armies/alliances despite their possible rivalries even amongst each other on the same side.

Why not? Why shouldn't Dota become a fantasy lore like Shannara, the Disc World novels, Forgotten Realms, Warcraft, Wheel of Time, The Neverending Story, Harry Potter or Narnia? Dota's potential with all those unique and highly diverse characters is huge. Just look at all the fan art and the lore fan-videos from China about Sand King, Terrorblade, Vengeful/Mortred or ShadowFiend. People love their heroes, they love lore, they want to know every detail. Sometimes fantasy is purely entertainment but it can be so much more than that.

It would be a crime not to turn Dota into a coherent fictional world.

well, eventually I think there is potential for that, but I'm talking about the near term. I've read about there being comics and videos planned, and thats awesome and will definitely help shape it into something like that, but for the time being, getting just the core of the world to make sense is more important than that to me for now. I mean in the long term I'd LOVE to see it expanded a great degree. Could even have spinoffs perhaps. But I feel like in order to get there, you need the coherent world first, so thats what I wanted to focus on.

You guys already pretty much covered what I've been thinking on this topic, but just to highlight a couple things that matter to me:

-World seems too disjointed. Easily the majority of the individual stories are good, but every single one brings up new places and locations, it's just too much to keep track of
-What is DotA exactly? What is compelling all of these various heroes to beat the hell out of each other?
-A map would be very nice to have, even if it's just a quick, temporary MS Paint sketch
-More connections between the various heroes

Yeah, reading all the lore was very interesting, but it was pretty hard to piece everything together (in fact I couldn't do it). The Game of Thrones trailer did such a great job of piecing all the locations together with their show intro (I had never heard of the series before, and their intro did a superb job of showing locations and kind of setting up the 'world map' and helping me understand the layout). Here's the video for reference:

I want a more elaborate lore as well. But it will take time to build it and I do not expect it to be comnpletely though through when the game comes out. VALVe will add to the lore over time surely BUT we still need a solid foundation for the world. I think what bothers me most about the hero-stories so far is that non of them explain why they joined a certain faction of the DotA battle or why they joined this particular battle. What is the battle even about? We have heard of so many places; islands, valleys, mountains, the depths of the sea, the underground of volcanos...a map would go a long way, I think XD
And we do not know how flexible the lore is since they have already recorded most voice-lines for the implemented heroes...

There is no more Frozen Throne and Tree of Life, so we can woven up and create an entirely new world. I`d like to see that as well, since it holds tremendous potential. Why they fight? There could be at least 20 legal and realistic reasons. I`ll drop by later and make some.

well currently there's like a major "city" on the radiant kind of ancient, and a somewhat diabolic city as an ancient on the dire the team. I dislike the ancients.

The world tree.... can be used yet again by simply referring to the Ygdrassil from the Celtic lore. As for the Dire team, a pool of dark energy, some fountain... or ever burning fire whatever can be housed in the city perhaps but it's not a True ancient when it's a city. But that's merely visuals.

So now ontopic we have a shot at New fresh and Great Lores. Creating our own Dota Universe.

Now what is important to have in this Lore, some Structure sure. How was the world created? Do we grant tribe nations and races forms of religion, if yes what do we base them on etc. But what's most important, Strife. And for strife there needs to be a way for heroes to face eachother. How do we create a setting that makes sure that ALL heroes have a benefit from participating in a war somewhere in the universe? Just sheer power and balance between good and evil sure. But still how do we connect these heroes, since without connection between them, or basicly their races etc. there is no strife. For one to have strife there needs to be some way both have "met". I can't really argue with anyone if i never came across them.

My suggestions and Set up of this Universe

The norse mythology had a great idea on how the universe existed, they had 9 worlds which were inter connected with eachother and only with some special tansports(such as the Aesir had the Bifrost) To travel from world to world.

The middle of their world was earth, by being the middlepoint of something everyone would like it for it's perfect location. So you'd have a great reason for ANY tribe race etc. To be willing to fight for that area. So i suggest the world in the middle of our universe to be the one where the actual battle is fought. Yet in the same time other maps can be other locations in the same universe, think of minigame maps and other possibilities. Perhaps even the idea of having the "lower grounds" for a stronger team versus a weaker team with better grounds kinda like in shougi some great players start with less or weaker pieces.

Now, how many worlds do we want, at least three, The Radiant native Holy Light planet thingie basicly Heaven. This is where "Good" Gods live
The Dire native, Demonic planet Thnigie basicly Hell. This is where the "Evil" Gods Reside.

But instead of just one planet at that Area, i see it more like 1 MAJOR planet with it's own "solar system" where the major planet is the "sun" on it's own.i'll make some pictures t give you guysome idea's

                  Radiant Heaven:
This is where the God's Of Good Live/Reside whatever.

Heaven: This is where the ArchAngels Fly, The light demigods live etc. These can be heroes like Chen for instance.

Earth: This is where the battle is placed, the area of the two rivers, this is where we jack the runes, kill roshan, and gank our opponents.

Hell: This is where the Archdemon's make their plans and feed on weaker demons. Think of heroes like Queens of Pain, Balanar etc.

Dire Hell: This is where the Gods of Darkness Live and his minor gods, Basicly Satan, not sure if Doom should be a follow or the Lord of the Dire.

The "worlds" can follow the name of their Central Planet.

I don't think its accurate to call them cities. They are army bases.

A city being an ancients is kinda meh for me. But what could be hidden inside these city's ? Some source of power ... a City can't really be an Ancient.... And an army base isn't what i'd consider an ancient either to be honest.

sorry, I think I misunderstood what you were referring to. I thought you were talking about each base, but you were talking about the actual models for the ancients themselves.

yea :P currently we really lay siege on the ACTUAL ancients instead of the scape that hold them.

Since there is no actual campaign or single player, I think:

                            1.The heroes former background
2.Their reason for joining the war

                            Should suffice.

                            Just another day.

You could consider the main buildings (former frozen throne & tree of life) shrines / sanctums of the ancients. This would definitly give each side a valid reason to fight for the protection of their own sanctum and for the destruction of their foes one. Religion has always been a good reason for wars..
