Heroes, and heroes yet to come, all have different perspectives on their side. I think they are drawn to the Ancients not because they are "manipulated", but that most are for the goals of the Ancients or simply the power of the ancients. Seemingly the Radiant want peace and order in the world, while the Dire want chaos and death to seep through the world like a plague. The Radiant provide the use of Life, Purity and Light magics; the Dire provide the use of Chaos, Darkness and Death magics. Some also join a side because it is more populated by people of the same race or even culture (Tinker, Sniper, Clockwork). Some join to exact vengeance, revenge or just kill the rival.

Now about "Radiant Heroes" being on the Dire side (and the other way around), it's easy to explain. Some lose faith in the goals of their ancient, don't get enough power, are stuck in the same faction as their rival or simply are blinded by pure zealotry and beliefs (If Omniknight joins the Dire, it's safe to assume that he thinks that the Radiant are heretics, refusing to believe in his god.).

I don't agree enterily, I feel it's more like the D&D lawful vs chaos, as Dire heroes like Weaver, Darkseer, Spectre and Faceless Void seem chaotic in nature but not necessarily 'evil ' or wanting death and decay, Radiant do seem to be overal 'good'.

I never meant the heroes, I meant the ancients themselves :P.

I don't really see the stones as "good" or "evil" but rather both as powerful ancient beings from before time. They don't fit in our good-evil-schemes or terms but rather only follow their own interests. I'd rather say that the Dire will chose it's path in darker and corrupter environment, dazzling heroes with the promise of overcoming death itself, granting powers beyond imagination and the Radiant -obviously- acting as a counterpart, playing good and manipulating them with their conscience. Both only seek to win the war over their ancient enemy.

The thing is that the cliche good-evil thing will always be there. The problem however is that a lot of heroes can't be really manipulated (if not all of them). Not to mention that light/nature powers wouldn't simply allow themselves to be used for evil by the Radiant. The thing is that the ancients seep power and enlightenment, which is what draws the attention of most of heroes (take for example Leshrac, who is bent only on chaos and destruction magic (which, coincidentally, is governed only by the Dire)). There's a reason why none of the Dire heroes can use light magics, and the way around - The Radiant can't use darkness magic.

So now we finally know why these heroes are fighting an "endless war" like G.I. Joe!

First I wanted to elaborate why I consider the above a bad idea but this explains it perfectly:

I find it an interesting twist on the lore that both entities are equally "bad" in their eternal struggle and both use indoctrination to reach their goal; defeating their counterpart.
People always chose allegiances based on their own dispositions and who they can identify with. So heroes and entire cultures chose their sides based on shallow observations, meaning that "good" people chose the Radiant simply because it looks like the "nicer" option while the mad and corrupted did the same with the Dire which only seems to reflect their ways.

I always thought "Dota" would be a good name for their world/planet. After all this is the "world of Dota". And Dota is a nonsense word now since it is no longer standing for Defense of the Ancients.
