I was really, really hoping that the 'treasure' might have been the chalice mentioned in Naga Siren's lore. That would have immediately alluded ties of Slithice to both Maelrawn and Tidehunter. Unfortunately, turns out it's the 850 gold gem that restocks every 8(?) minutes or so.

You never know. I'd like to think that this isn't just some random story, and that maybe with further pages added, this little snippet might result in some more concrete connections.

If Slardar, being a Deep One, has any connection to Maelwoof, he could also possibly be on the surface to find the Gem, but that would be redundant as shit if they sent HIM to find it.
well slardar does give true sight while naga prevents invisibility as well. maybe they themselves arent sent to retrieve it, but the gem may indeed have a connection to the sea creatures.

as for tide, well its possible he was sent by maelrawn, but then after seeing kunkka survive he abandoned/forgot his mission to find the gem.

Among the sea creatures, the only one that have a problem with gem is Slark.
I though we agreed on other topics that both Naga and Sladar are Deep Ones, the official, hierarchical society of sea creatures and they are against Maelrawn and his minions. Maelrawn is kinda like a sea dark evil lord.
Should Maelrawn has some connection to Slark and Dark Reef?

You guys... it's obviously Kunkka vs. Tidehunter, one of the most popular character interactions. Kunkka is the captain who stole the Gem, which lets you see anything hidden, including ghosts. Kunkka's ult is a Ghost Ship, which can either be one of the ships listed in the poem or more likely his own ship and crew as destroyed by Maelrawn. Tidehunter is one of Maelrawn's servants sent onto land to get the Gem back. Tidehunter's ult is summoning Maelrawn the Tentacular.

My, you don't say. Only the poem seems pretty ancient, there is no mention of Cladd, or the captain surviving the voyage at all (even though Kunkka is pretty much a ghost, we know the circumstances of his death and they do not match) and Tidehunter has a minimal role in this, his appearance being only implied at best. Kunkka has a story of his own, Tidehunter - much the same. This poem, from what we see, hear and know, is the setup for Maelrawn and the marine races. Nothing to do with the Admiral. He probably hasn't been born back then.
Heroes this user should seriously reconsider ever picking again.

It explicitly mentions at least one survivor.

I mean, come on. It's a story about a treasure-hunting sea captain who finds a treasure that allows him to see ghost ships, angering the aquatic gods and having his own ship and crew destroyed/ghostified in the process. It is the most obvious Kunkka reference I have ever seen.

It is a story about a captain and his ability to see ghost ships, FFS!

well, we dont know exactly how old the admiral is, theres a good chance hes a ghost himself if you remember the thread about that. or the guy that stole it is his direct ancestor

Kunkka is a ghost, yes. He drowned a long time ago.

Researching people's theories about the poem, thought I'd correct something.
Is it a crime to dredge from the bottom of the ocean something rather interesting?
                        The answer is no.
                        No it is not.

We don't speak about Old Kunkka anymore. Bad things happen when his fate gets mentioned on a rainy day. Best stay away from things of the beyond-planes.

                            The Gem works, though.

I would have my own fantasy thought about those crews who died in that incident was Kunkka's direct ancestor.

Yeah, this is actually much more probable, it allows us to connect these heroes to the story and have it make sense. We still don't know why exactly Tidehunter hates Kunkka so much, huh? And Leviathan's liking of kraken shells...

Maybe it just passes from generation to generation.
