Even if it is 'optional' it is still a bad suggestion.
Who would use that profanity filter anyway?
Underaged kids? oh c'mon.
The reason why profanity filter is bad has been said many times before. Even if you can enable/disable it. It is not worth the effort programming it. Devs have plenty stuff to do. And I would rather see devs working on heroes/tutorial rather than a filter.James "2GD" Harding's career as a Dota 2 host on Valve events

Secondly, such a tool is ridiculously easy to code. Just have a list of words that are bad (easily obtained from other existing such tools) and sub them out for symbols. Thirdly, since this takes barely any time to do (with a team of developers) it should be no problem at all. Also, no one said that Valve had to do it NOW. They can wait until they release all the heroes/tutorial.
Please don't call a suggestion bad if your argument is brainless and idiotic, thanks.

A filter can never be perfect, and will inevitably be bypassed. If that doesn't negate the purpose in the first place, the filter will trigger in normal situations "ta ss" = "tlove", disrupting my gameplay due to a communication breakdown.
-1, not even optionally.Last edited by NonToxic; 10-20-2012, 12:14 AM.

In regards to the OP I have no problems with a word filter. I don't see why this is such an issue for so many people. But it gave me another idea, I'm not sure it was different enough to warrant another thread but: A word filter list.
I'm not sure how many here are users of tweetdeck but it has an awesome feature where you can place words you don't wish to see in your timeline in to a small form entry and it will filter and hide any which contain it. For example: iPad, Apple, Linux, Windows. Anyone I follow who tweet and include those words I won't see on my timeline. My idea was to apply the same kind of idea to Dota 2. Often it's not viable to ignore someone outright, they may well be calling missing among other things. But they might just be being an abusive fool when someone dies typing commonly uttered phrases like "OMG NOOBS" etc. With the word filter system you would still see all their calls and suggestions like gather for smoke but you would be able to not to see their non-constructive chat. Just putting that out there.
