  • New item suggestions for DOTA2

Also posted the same thread on steam community forums, where there will most likely be some comments and feedback.

    Suggestions for new DOTA2 items
In this post I'd like to suggest new and hopefully interesting items for DOTA2. The post is oriented towards the community and the developers. If the items were deemed to be of a high enough design quality, they might get implemented. Perhaps you can leave your own suggestions - and of course feedback about these suggestions - in the comment section.

    Legendre's Wand of Polytechnique
    Mid Game - Meta Ability

Abstract: Allows the storing of an ability as a charge to be cast later.
Description: Activated with a 2 second channel time, stores a charge of an ability that is not on cooldown into the item. Later the item can be activated to cast this ability again, putting the item on cooldown
Additional effects: Reduces the cooldown of all abilities and items by 4%
Candidate recipe: Crown + Staff of Wizardry + Robe of the Magi + Recipe
    Recipe derived effects: + 20 intelligence, + 4 agility, + 4 strength
    Notes:
    - Recipe derived effects are unamplified in the suggestions.
    - All values and details in the suggestions are intended as tentative.
    - Compare refresher orb.
    - Only allows storing non-ultimate abilities.
    - Doesn't work on abilities that have auto-cast.
    - Doesn't work on abilities that are passive.
    - Doesn't work on abilities that have charges by default.
    - Some abilities might need to be specifically included/excluded.
    - Casting the ability does not require channeling. Only storing requires a channel.
    - Multiple copies of item do not allow storing several charges.

    Falcon Idol Blade
    Mid Game - Support Item

Abstract: Allows summoning a surveilling falcon similar to Beastmaster's hawk.
Description: Activated ability of the item summons a surveilling hawk to scout the nearby area for a period of time. Slowly glides an arc until disappearing. Can be attacked.
    Additional effects: Left blank
Candidate recipe: Falcon Blade + Ring of Protection + Recipe
Recipe derived effects: +150 health +1.6 mana regeneration +10 damage +2 armor
    Notes:
    - Recipe derived effects are unamplified in the suggestions.
    - All values and details in the suggestions are intended as tentative.
    - With the inclusion of this item Beastmaster's Hawk ability could be improved to make it distinctly better compared to the item's replica ability.
    - Could use a better name possibly.

    Runemail
    Late Game - Defensive Item

Abstract: An armor with a triggered ability that zaps and mini-stuns enemies within a short radius and debuffs their damage for a short period of time. Goes on cooldown after triggering.
Description: If the wielder takes 4 separate instances of physical damage from enemy heroes within 1.8 seconds, the armor triggers it's innate ability and zaps enemies within a short radius that's effectively melee range. The zap mini-stuns the enemies within range for 0.4 seconds and applies a damage debuff for 2 seconds.
    Additional effects: Left Blank
Candidate recipe: Platemail + Ultimate Orb + Recipe
    Recipe derived effects: + 10 armor + 10 strength + 10 agility + 10 intelligence
    Notes:
    - Recipe derived effects are unamplified in the suggestions.
    - All values and details in the suggestions are intended as tentative.
    - "Rune" conceptually refers to a rune on the armor that triggers when the armor is hit.
    - Name could also have a reference to dwarves as runes are often associated with them.
    - Does not trigger on creep damage.
    - Does not trigger on return damage effects such as blademail or dispersion.
    - Ideally values adjusted so that fast attack speeds will trigger the armor, or when there are multiple heroes attacking the same target thus increasing number of hits over time.
    - Compare Aeon Disk.

What do you think about these suggestions?
Do you think they could complement the game?
What item would you like to see in DOTA2?

    Crypt Staff
    Mid Game - Support Item

Abstract: A defensive item with activated ability that applies a basic dispel and a debuff on a single target.
Description: Activated ability with a cooldown. Applies a basic dispel on target, followed by a debuff with -10 strength and -75% mana regeneration, target loses mana during the debuff.
    Additional effects: +3 Mana regeneration
Candidate recipe: Mystic Staff + Chainmail + Vitality Booster + Recipe
Recipe derived effects: +4 armor +25 intelligence +250 health
    Notes:
    - Recipe derived effects are unamplified in the suggestions.
    - All values and details in the suggestions are intended as tentative.
    - Compare Nullifier
    - Compare Eye of Skadi, Shiva's Guard
    - Consider interaction with Undying, Diffusal Blade, Anti-mage, Nyx
    - Debuff effects should be changed, while maintaining somewhat similar theme
    - Conceptually involves a common motif related to undeath, giving armor and health. Lack of something goes well with that and the 'crypt' theme. Consider e.g. Death prophet.
    - Might need a better name

The wand would be fun, but I wonder if it would be hard to balance.

        Roman Fortress
        Late Game - Defensive Item

Abstract: Late game armor that provides status resistance and interacts with critical hits & pure damage.
Description: Whenever the wearer sustains a critical hit or is dealt pure damage, they gain a stack of status resistance and armor. Stack duration can be for an example 6 seconds, and maximum number of stacks 5. A single stack can give e.g. 3 armor and 10% status resistance, up to a cap of 60% status resistance (if wearer has other sources of status resistance this effect can't increase the value higher).
        Additional effects: +18% Status resistance
Candidate recipe: Reaver + Eaglesong + Platemail + Recipe
Recipe derived effects: +25 strength + 25 agility +10 armor
        Notes:
        - Recipe derived effects are unamplified in the suggestions.
        - All values and details in the suggestions are intended as tentative.
        - Consider that the candidate recipe combines both Reaver and Eaglesong.
        - Note that it doesn't interact with non-critical physical damage or magical damage.
        - Consider Juggernaut, Enchantress, Warlock, Bloodseeker.
        - Conceptually "Roman Fortress" is intended as a nickname for some kind of platemail/armor.
        - The base value and the stack details definitely need to be adjusted, but these serve as placeholders.

        Berserker's Helm
        Mid Game - Carry item

Abstract: Helmet that grants damage, status resistance, and an activated ability that makes the wearer immune to stun and grants them some extra status resistance for a short period of time.
Description: When the wearer activates the item's ability which can only target self, the item goes on cooldown, and the wearer gains a short lasting buff that makes them immune to stun and provides them extra status resistance. The duration can be for an example 3.5 seconds and provide the user 30% status resistance for that time, or the status resistance buff can linger for a longer time than the stun immunity. The activated ability could also increase damage in some way.
        Additional effects: +10% status resistance
Candidate recipe: Fluffy Hat + Mithril Hammer + Helm of Iron Will + Recipe
Recipe derived effects: +125 health +24 damage +5 armor +5 health regeneration.
        Notes:
        - Recipe derived effects are unamplified in the suggestions.
        - All values and details in the suggestions are intended as tentative.
        - Compare Black King Bar
        - Conceptually somewhat similar to Mask of Madness
        - The explicit values for status resistance gain are placeholders intended as examples.

          Amulet of Lazarus
Mid Game - Mixed Purpose Item

Abstract: An item that shortens the respawn time of the wearer by 13 seconds.
Description: When the wearer dies they'll next respawn will occur 13 seconds earlier. Additionally when the wearer is resurrected by Aegis of the Immortal, the resurrection delay is shortened by 1.6 seconds. This effect could also apply, as halved perhaps, to the reincarnation delay of Wraith King.
          Additional effects: Left Blank
Candidate recipe: Perseverance + Ring of Protection + Ring of Protection + Recipe
Recipe derived effects: +4 armor +6.5 health regeneration +2.25 mana regeneration
          Notes:
          - Recipe derived effects are unamplified in the suggestions.
          - All values and details in the suggestions are intended as tentative.
          - Additional option would be to add 3 seconds to the respawn timer of opponents defeated by the wearer
          - Adjusting the recipe cost of the item is definitely necessary
          - The name Lazarus refers to two distinct biblical figures, Lazarus of Bethany who was resurrected. This has resulted to the name being used in the context of returning from the dead in one way or another. The second figure named Lazarus is a poor man in a story of a Rich man and the beggar. This is also appropriate, since while reincarnation in DOTA has no direct gold value, it has an implicit value, thus posing a fable like question about the worth of possessions.

            Midnight Cape
Early Game - Mixed Purpose Item

Abstract: Activated ability transforms the user into a bat or other nocturnal flying creature with free pathing and a movement speed buff for a short period of time. User's abilities are silenced while transformed.
Description: Activating the item allows transforming the wearer into a bat, at night time also renders the user invisible while in the form, similarly to phantom assassin's blur ability, but with larger detection radius, while in this form the user has free pathing and a movement speed buff. Transformation also grants the user additional night vision that's lost when the user transforms back to normal form. When the ability is activated, a puff of smoke with a tight radius is cast around the wearer, making the user invisible while within the puff of smoke. The purpose is to enable using the item for escaping, in such a way that the extra and very short period of invisibility due to the puff of smoke, can be used to hide the direction into which the user escapes. So the user is likely to get 0.5-1.2 second head start in making their escape, because of the short invisibility, but still short enough so that opponents can easily detect the user before they make it far enough. The user is silenced for the duration of the transformation.
Additional effects: +50 night vision radius
Candidate recipe: Shadow amulet + Wind lace + Band of Elvenskin + Recipe
Recipe derived effects: +20 movement speed +6 agility
            Notes:
            - Recipe derived effects are unamplified in the suggestions.
            - All values and details in the suggestions are intended as tentative.
            - The puff of smoke & related invisibility is crucial for this escape effect. Adjusting the duration and the radius so that it doesn't help with fighting a lot, but has some escape value, is tricky. For an example a useful duration might be 0.8 seconds, and radius similar to Riki's smokescreen.
            - The free pathing and limited invisibility at night time can also be used to gain initiative, as well as scouting.
            - To limit the battle usefulness of the item, it might be necessary to mute the inventory as well for the period of the transformation.
            - Bat transformation is a bit cliché
            - Item is perhaps too similar to glimmer cape
            - Adjusting the item's cost & slot efficiency is presumably a bit tricky.
            - I think it would be appropriate for this to be a niche item, usable only by a few heroes, so you don't see this effect all the time, which could increase chaos and noise.
            - Personally I'm not very pleased with this design concept so far, but posting it regardless.

How would you improve this item's design?

              Tower Shield
Early Game - Defensive Item - Basic Item

Abstract:Basic item that grants armor and defense against ranged physical damage.
Description: Basic item that reduces damage from basic attacks made outside a given range, effectively only reducing damage from ranged attacks. It also means that the reduction from ranged attacks is lost if the attacker is within a given range despite being ranged. Candidate value could be 12% (value derived as composite of armor and ranged reduction).
              Additional effects: +3 Armor
Candidate recipe: None - Gold cost (Basic item)
              Recipe derived effects: None
              Notes:
              - Recipe derived effects are unamplified in the suggestions.
              - All values and details in the suggestions are intended as tentative.
              - Intended also to allow the creation of a derived item which follows next up
              - Numeric adjustment of cost, armor and explicit reduction is necessary

              Sacred Guard
              Early Game - Defensive Item

Abstract: An item with an active "hold fast" ability that reduces damage from ranged attacks, and negates some of the extra damage from critical hits, with the cost of slowing the unit for a period of time.
Description: An item that passively reduces damage from ranged attacks made outside a given range, inherited from the root item described above as "Tower Shield". This upgraded version would come with an activated "hold fast" ability, that makes the wearer defend actively and slow down, amplifying damage reduction from basic ranged attacks, and negating most of the extra damage from critical hits. The movement slow could be for an example 75% and extra damage from critical hits reduced by 60%, additionally damage reduction from ranged attacks is increased for the duration of the activated ability.
              Additional effects: Left Blank
Candidate recipe: Tower Shield + Helm of Iron Will + Recipe
Recipe derived effects: +8 Armor +5 Health regeneration
              Notes:
              - Recipe derived effects are unamplified in the suggestions.
              - All values and details in the suggestions are intended as tentative.
              - Compare Mars' Bulwark
              - Consider critical damage reduction interaction with Phantom Assassin, Juggernaut
              - Consider interaction with Daedalus
              - "Steadfast" or "Hold fast" is a fairly common motif in games, perhaps a bit cliché
