I've posted about this here also http://dev.dota2.com/showthread.php?t=21939
My last message of a simple example and why this is needed for many many players of dota:

In such a situation, with hp bars off, i could just hover the mouse cursor over the targeted creep to easily see just his hp bar.
It's simple, loads of ppl are just used to have to press ALT to see them. Personally i find it a lot better then to just have it on at all times. And nobody is asking to remove the current functionality completely, just to give both options to the players.

im not saying to just make it an option .... im saying to allow us to view it with a button .... in WC3 dota all u had to do was hold down ALT and u can see everyone's HP .... and then when u let go it went away .... I would like thsi functionality back rather than having it up the whole time.

i dun c why you can't have ALT have the light indicator at te same time as having the show/dont show feature of health/mana bars (with pinging of course)

and of course with ppl who ahve health n mana bar enabled already it just keeps it shown.

I can't imagine playing without health bars visible all the time, as it makes me always aware of the situation and I don't have a problem processing it all. But why not make it an option? If someone doesn't want it then fine.

are you guys kidding me, you want less readability just because you're used to a game(Wc3) that has horrible readability compared to this game. Hold down alt? my ass. but yeah, what orange said.

I was playing with Health bars always on in DotA 1 as well.. It was nice. I guess, but an option for disabling it is for the good of the community

This is talking about hiding health/mana bars on friendlies and health bars on enemies, not about wanting to hide non-existent mana bars on enemies. Seriously this isn't complicated stuff.

On topic, actually I am fine with this becasue this will give me helpful information, then I am trying to get used to it.
im not saying to take it off ... just saying let us disable it if we want & give us our old ALT function back. new one is quite useless. if u lose sight of ur hero just center urself and bam ... though it looks cool we dont need te spotlight .... and u can also bind it to something else isntead. just give us our old ALT

+1 about ALT, I have been playing for two months, and still not getting used to it. Kinda feels weird the health bars do not disappear when my hand isn't on alt. Also the spotlight function is almost useless for me: usually in the heat of battle if i lose visual contact with my hero, he/she would be out of my screen. If the hero was in the screen, i wud probably recognize it because hero models are unique now. The spotlight just illuminates everything around the hero and adds the beam. Hero mini-portraits are also a little weird because they do not match up with the player's team color.
