  • Should we import the global weather? Rain, snow, moonlight rays etc.

First of all, I hope that I've opened the thread in the right forum. If not - sorry.

Anyway, I have stumbled upon this thread - http://dev.dota2.com/showthread.php?t=40794 Author mentioned the system where the weather should change in accordance to gameplay - big team fights - weather get's changed (storms etc). But that's too relative in my opinion; so I am asking you, what do you think about importing the global weather?

This was available in the first Dota (but not on the global range), so you were able to turn on rain only for yourself. Wouldn't it be cool to have like 10% chance to get a rain in the game? Sometimes it would be a 30 second of heavy rain, sometimes 3-4 minutes of normal rain. Also, having a slight "above the ground" fog during the early morning? Or rays of moonlight during the night?

Even though some of you might say that this would be a big gameplay nerf, it actually wouldn't. The proc of the weather doesn't have to be big (in some games you could have the sunny weather during the whole party). But this would definitely bring some dynamic to the way passive terrain. Valve is best known for the details like this so I am sure they would do the epic job with this weather system.

There is also a possibility to make this system local - only for players who decide to turn on the weather. What do you think?

Why not? Anyway, it should be beautiful, not just particles

I'm all for the -weather moonlight thing dota 1 had.

Aka turning different weathers on for your view. While we're at it, what happened to -water green?

Sudden storms in a teamfight sound annoying when you have games with zeus, razor, storm, ...

While this is great and all. There are definitely balance issues with this, especially things like Heavy Rain or Snow fall where it makes it hard to see heroes visually from the players perspective (Not heroes). A think a very light rain or even a snow map for the Holidays would be awesome. However, anything excessive visually could be detrimental to balance.

What I want is DIFFERENT types of weather in different places of map. And it should be random.

For example, at some point, we might have windy on radiant side, rain on rivers, calm on dire side. May be a bit dark around rivers (cause of rain on river side).
Windy weather near river can cause larger "waves/tides".

          Weather should transition smoothly.

I think we should keep out HEAVY rain. Light rain is ok. Also, snow should be completely out because how it affects gameplay.

Well i can tell you never played dota 1. The weather was there for visual appearance. You could also turn it off if you wanted too. You did not need to play with it on at all

Weather would be awesome. I'm all for it.
Some winds blowing, a light rain shower, a few snowflakes here or there, moonlight etc.. would love all of it
It really adds to the atmosphere

HoN for example has this option too. And it looks really nice, but i never turned it on because it's just too much... it really does make it a little bit harder to see, or maybe you just need to get used to it. However, i dont mind getting this implemented, as long as you don't HAVE to see it/as long as there's an option to turn it off.

Snow would, of course, be saved for a holiday version of the map. Assuming that Valve plans on doing such variants.
