  • [Suggestion] Language pairing

I think this is turning into my favourite complaint but it's indisputable, communication sucks.

I'm sure everyone here has at some point encountered a match where not everyone is speaking the same language on your team and this can become a huge problem when trying to work with others. Some of you might say "restrict your region" or "use pings" but when it comes down to it regardless where you are in the world there is always people in your region who have a hard time if capable at all of speaking whatever language you'd expect them to. For example I live in North America(Canada), in Canada we have the official languages are English and French and down in the states while the majority of people speak English and roughly 12 percent speak Spanish. So far that's 3 languages in NA that you shouldn't be surprised to come across but from what I have found(in BC anyway) is that there are large numbers of east Indians speaking their native tongue, and their are a large number of people from the Asian population that will speak mandarin and Cantonese. I'm likely missing some but the point I'm trying to make here is that there are a number of people speaking various languages regardless of the region that cannot be expected to know every language(especially in Europe in Asia, way to many to list) well.

So my idea is this, allow people to list the languages they are capable of speaking somewhere and implement a system that will attempt to match those players capable of speaking the same languages together. This system should not be a filter however as the only thing worse than bad communication is stupidly long queue times. So what would happen is when you enter the public match making there is going to be a pool of players that can be put together and should the players have chosen to participate in the language pairing the match making system will attempt to put the players of the same languages they are capable of speaking together if it's possible to do without imbalancing the team. "But I prefer to only speak language X even though I know Y" which is perfectly fine, choose not to list it but the thing is there would be a possibility you could be put in a game where the players only speak language Z(which can happen even now) as no games could be found for language X. There could also be a possibility of rating your language skill level to give priority for example there would be 3 levels, novice, decent, fluent and for myself I'd choose English(fluent) and French(novice). While I'd much prefer to be paired with a English speaking group I'd rather go with a French speaking group as opposed to a German speaking group should the bizzare scenario of no English players to be paired with occur.

So as of right now it's luck of the draw and even then you can still end up with a mixed bag. With this system though that can still occur it should drastically reduce the chances of a player being stuck to map pings as their team mates cannot understand them due to the language barrier. So really there would be nothing to lose and when the game comes out of beta with a much larger player base this system should be able to effectively pair players together and while not solve the communication issue but help to refine better communication among players.

Sure but wherever you go no matter what it's never going to be 100% 1 language.

I'm surprised no one has an opinion to share on this as I have read a few times on the playdota forums that some do not like to used chat as they don't feel comfortable when someone does not speak their own language.

That's what you would think, but oh boy, the amount of non-english speaking players i've seen in every dota-style game is about 35% on europe servers.

I would love that system to tick the languages you are capable of speaking, +1 to that!

Sure I'd agree as I have found when I've been travelling most people know at least some English but it is not necessarily their strongest or preferred language which can really hinder communication. Like I can speak a little bit of French but that doesn't mean I won't have a hard time being placed in a French speaking team

Incorrect definition of "racist". Xenophobic, perhaps.

Nearly every game I've played on Europe servers has been ruined by a Russian.

                      Just sayin'.

Most european players know at least a bit of english and they understand dota terms in english, but voice communication might be a serious issue. I've played some games in LoL with russians, and it's OK if they are 1-2, as they usually say the terms in english or when talking in russian they are just chatting with his other friend. But when most of the players are from a certain location with a certain language, the "international players" get screwed. This has happened to me with germans, french, spanish (if I didnt was spanish as well), greeks, and russians.

I think there's no need of a serious division between people of different countries/languages, as some can speak in english as well as his mother tongue. Just make separate (and smaller) queues for the people who only want to speak in X language, and then, the general, "official" big queues.

When this game comes out of beta, it will probably have enough players to do something like that.
