  • How is dota 2 using the UT announcer?

Since I started playing I've been noticing the sound is taken directly from the UT games, even with other announcers it still uses the same expressions (killing spree, rampage, etc)

Isn't it copyrighted or something? can someone explain this?

It isn't the UT announcer, even though they are saying the same lines. They re-recorded all of the lines in order to use it

this is untrue; dota 1 used unreal 99 voices, dota 2 uses the sounds from unreal 2k4

AFAIK rampage ultrakill etc is not copyrighted at all. So many games' custom modes uses it, its kinda viral.

it is most definitely copyrighted. Being widely used in user-made mods doesn't change that

Well, Valve used the Quake engine at the time they made Half - Life. So i guess, it's the same thing.

Valve licensed the quake engine so it's not really the same thing at all

That's what i am saying, they licensed it. Maybe they have some other stuff licensed from id software.

Are you sure? I could have sworn I read they had to re-record the announcer in order to use it. I guess I am mistaken

They probably licensed them or just asked to use them. More likely the former.
